SUMMARY:CORRIE DICK 'SUN SWELLS'
DESCRIPTION:Having played at SoundCellar last year as drummer with the Outram/Luft Quartet\, we were keen to have CORRIE DICK back to lead his own ensemble for us for the first time since 2016. This time he brings with him some of the best musicians playing in the UK today\, not least undoubted SoundCellar favourites Laura Jurd on trumpet and Rob Luft on guitar\, together with vocalist Rebecka Edlund and bassist Caius Williams. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nTicket link below \nAs has been articulated elsewhere\, Corrie has established himself at the “…rhythmic epicentre of a new era of innovative British jazz”. His first album under his own name 2015’s ‘Impossible Things’ remains one of those albums that captures and highlights the outstanding quality of a whole generation of musicians that have emerged from the UK touring scene over the last decade or so. \nHe has built this reputation in collaborations with such luminaries as Mark Lockheart\, Jake Long and Jasper Hoiby\, as well as by being a crucial member of such innovative bands as the Rob Luft Group\, the Elliot Galvin Trio\, of Laura Jurd’s numerous ensembles including the Mercury Music Prize shortlisted Dinosaur and of elusive and alternative bands Ink Line and I Don’t Need Light\, Please Give Me Water. \nCorrie’s latest album ‘Sun Swells’ was released (on Ubuntu Music) last year and it has taken another step forward with its mix of Scottish\, Scandinavian\, African and English jazz and folk influences\, together with electronic and rock overtones. To quote Corrie himself: “I wanted to write a jazz album that had rock instrumentation at its core: guitar-bass-drums. Rob Luft (guitar)\, Tom McCredie (bass) and I have been improvising and writing together for years and years and we’ve forged a sound that is uniquely crunchy yet summery\, so I wanted that sound at the centre but decorated with all sorts of elements. I basically wanted to make folk-rock-jazz but treat it how electronic music producer Mura Masa treats his tracks–chucking the whole damn fruit bowl at the thing but somehow keeping space and air in the arrangement and the mix.” \nFor their SoundCellar performance\, Corrie is bringing a great group of musicians and we are really looking forward to the evening. \n“The trumpeter [Laura Jurd] herself and expressive drummer Corrie Dick are both sensations who have made big names for themselves straight out of the blocks. Compared to other genres\, jazz doesn’t really thrive on hype. Their secret is just that they’re really\, really good.” (London Jazz News) \n“Corrie Dick is one of the most gifted drummers I’ve come across in recent years; he’s well on his way to being a visionary both as a musician and composer. With such vibrance and flair there is no doubt in my mind that he will soon assert himself as one of the finest contemporary percussionists on the UK scene.” (NY saxophonist and SoundCellar alumni\, Will Vinson) \nCorrie Dick: Drums\, Percussion\nRebecka Edlund: Voice\nLaura Jurd: Trumpet\nRob Luft: Guitar\nCaius Williams: Bass \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:NICK MALCOLM'S 'OUT FRONT'
DESCRIPTION:It’s nine years since Bristol-based NICK MALCOLM played at SoundCellar as a guest musician with another ensemble\, so we are delighted that he is now bringing his own band Out Front to our stage. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nSomething of a UK super group\, Out Front formed to play the music of two of jazz’s greatest ‘inside-outside’ masters; trumpeter Booker Little and pianist Andrew Hill. Drawing on a wealth of fabulous compositions and featuring a rich line-up of three horns\, drums and bass\, the band explores the vast possibilities of this music\, from joyous straight ahead time playing\, to the most open of improvisation. \nIn addition to releasing three albums under his own name\, Nick is also a member of Rebecca Nash’s Redefining Element 78 project\, Dee Byrne’s Outlines and George Cooper’s Jazz Defenders. As a sideman he was a founder member of Eliza Carthy’s ‘Wayward Daughter’ as well as of vocalist Emily Wright’s ‘Moonlight Saving Time’. \nHe has also performed works by contemporary classical composers Ianncu Dumitrescu and Richard Barrett\, directed by the composers and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.\nHe has worked alongside major artists such as Lauren Kinsella\, Corey Mwamba\, Paul Dunmall\, Mark Sanders\, Iain Ballamy\, Alex Merritt\, Sara Colman\, Jason Rebello\, Tom Hewsom\, George Crowley\, Shabaka Hutchings and many others. \nNick has studied with world renowned trumpeters Ambrose Akinmusire\, Chris Batchelor and Ralph Alessi and teaches jazz trumpet privately and at Wells Cathedral School. \n“…a supremely gifted musician…a trumpet player for the 21st century…wow!” (Bebop Spoken Here)\n\nThe all-star line up that forms Out Front alongside Nick\, includes Jason Yarde\, Jake McMurchie\, Olie Brice and Dave Smith. All of these fantastic musicians have graced the SoundCellar stage with different ensembles in the past\, so we are really looking forward to hearing them perform together for us. \nNick Malcolm: Trumpet\nJason Yarde: Alto Saxophone\nJake McMurchie: Tenor Saxophone\nOlie Brice: Double Bass\nDave Smith: Drums \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event
