SUMMARY:HARRY CHRISTELIS & PEDRO VELASCO
DESCRIPTION:The forward thinking guitar duo of Harry Christelis & Pedro Velasco make their SoundCellar debut as part of a national tour to promote their debut release ‘Scribbling’ (Ubuntu Music). \nPlease note this gig will be a ‘house concert’ and is now SOLD OUT.\n \nHarry Christelis and Pedro Velasco form a guitar duo that explores and challenges the boundaries of improvised music. Theirs is a melting pot of jazz and folk harmony\, immersive sonic textures\, and calm\, introspective moments that are interjected with wild intensity. In a world that rushes to excite and distract\, their music focuses on taking time to develop and create space. This often-understated approach puts just as much emphasis on the notes that are not played\, as the ones that are. \nThe partnership was born in 2016\, when the two London-based guitarists came together for a concert and discovered a like-minded approach to music. Their musical connection has developed with each meeting since. They share a respect of jazz traditions but also a love of expanding these to incorporate elements from folk and electronic music\, as well as ambient styles and free improvisation. Together\, they’ve built a unique\, intimate setup and found a way of conversing that’s equally unassuming and thought-provoking. \nThey recorded their first album\, ‘Scribbling’\, in December 2020. The result is a truly distinct album that challenges the ideas of what a guitar duo should sound like. Some tracks might transport you to a sound world that feels like it belongs in outer space\, others as if you’re immersed in the depths of the ocean. It is\, however\, a beautifully balanced piece of work that keeps its feet firmly rooted in traditions of the instruments and the music they are playing. \n£15 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event

SUMMARY:In Our Own Space: A conversation with PHILIP WATSON and BILL FRISELL
DESCRIPTION:The very first interview version of In Our Own Space – our interactive online series\, and what an amazing evening we have for you. PHILIP WATSON the acclaimed writer and author has just published his book Bill Frisell\, Beautiful Dreamer: The Guitarist Who Changed the Sound of American Music and we are delighted to be able to hear Philip explain why such a bold statement about the iconic guitarist\, is not an exaggeration!  Using one or two key examples as illustrations during the interview\, Philip will give us just a hint of why this master of his instrument is held in such high regard by peers and audiences alike\, throughout the globe. \n Ticket link below \nWe are then extremely privileged and excited to be able to announce that a little later in the evening\, the book’s superstar subject himself\, BILL FRISELL\, will join us to talk about…whatever you the audience decide to ask him via the Zoom chat box!  Our own man Rob will run the interviews and I’m sure he and SoundCellar’s John will have one or two of their own questions for Bill too! \nWe hardly need to explain to our SoundCellar audience\, but with a career spanning more than 40 years\, Bill Frisell has established himself as one of the most innovative musicians in the world. A revolutionary guitar player and composer\, his performances represent playing at its most sublime. His most recent recording\, Valentine released on Blue Note\, is hailed as ‘a masterpiece’ by Downbeat. \nThrough unprecedented access\, and interviews with his close family\, friends and collaborators\, including some very famous names\, Philip Watson tells the story through his book of the guitarist who changed the sound of American music. Philip was deputy editor at GQ and editor-at-large at Esquire\, and has appeared on radio and television in the UK and Ireland. His in-depth features have appeared in the Telegraph Magazine\, Guardian\, Sunday Times\, Observer\, Irish Times\, Evening Standard and The Wire\, and he has interviewed icons such as Nick Cave\, Gil Scott-Heron\, Elvis Costello\, D’Angelo and many others. Bill Frisell\, Beautiful Dreamer is his first book. \nThis In Our Own Space evening coincides with the spring 2022 release of Philip’s book\, published by Faber and we are delighted to add as a wonderful ‘bonus’ that thanks to Faber’s generosity\, we will be offering all UK ticket buyers a special 20% discount off the price of the book\, via a code redeemable through Faber’s website.  Details will be provided at the end of the evening. \nWe’re sure you’ll agree this is going to be a wonderful SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space event\, when through the wonders of Zoom\, you can all get to hear first-hand\, the thoughts of the maestro Bill Frisell himself and of his biographer Philip Watson. It’s going to be a very special Sunday evening (or whatever time of the day it will be in your part of the world) and we really hope you will join us. \nTickets are only £8 (+booking fee) through the link below \nPhotos by Bríd O’Donovan (Philip) & Carole D’Inverno (Bill) \nShare this event

SUMMARY:ATLANTICUS
DESCRIPTION:ATLANTICUS is a unique British–American musical partnership bringing together two powerfully distinct musical personalities\, US saxophonist Peter Fraize and UK organist Terry Seabrook\, to explore their common interest in the rich transatlantic heritage of jazz. \nPLEASE NOTE: This gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT \nTicket link below \nATLANTICUS draws from the storied tradition of the great Hammond organ groups\, with a post–modern sound echoing the ground–breaking organ quartet of Larry Young’s Unity album. The music is mostly original\, spanning a stylistic spectrum from the hard bop blowout of the album’s title track ‘Blue Haven’\, the modal explorations of ‘That’s What’\, the odd–metered boogaloo of ‘Swank’\, and the Afro–Cuban reimagining of the Bobby Timmons classic ‘Moanin’’.Peter and Terry were introduced through a mutual friend and first teamed up for a short UK tour in 2016\, recruiting Brighton heavyweights trumpeter Jack Kendon and drummer Milo Fell to round out the lineup. From the very first gig\, their immediate and natural musical rapport sealed the transatlantic bonds for what has now become ATLANTICUS. The band delivered exciting high–energy performances to delighted crowds\, culminating in a head–turning performance at the Love Supreme festival. Building on that success\, the quartet convened once again in the summer of 2018 for a 25–date\, month–long tour of the southern UK\, playing clubs and festivals from London to Wales.By the end of their 2018 tour\, the band knew it was imperative to go in the studio and document their remarkable chemistry. The result is Blue Haven\, featuring nine original compositions by Peter and Terry along with invigorating arrangements of two classic standards. The entire album was recorded in a single day\, capturing all the vibe\, excitement and groove of the group’s live performances that UK fans have known about since 2016. The band is looking forward to touring in support of the release of this dynamic new recording in the summer of 2022. \nTerry Seabrook – organ\nPeter Fraize – tenor saxophone\nJack Kendon – trumpet\nMilo Fell – drums \nThis gig will be held at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. SUMMARY:MIKE OUTRAM-ROB LUFT QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Two of SoundCellar’s absolute favourites together in one gig – now that’s not to be missed! We present Master guitarists (not an exaggeration) Mike Outram and Rob Luft in a very rare collaboration. Both having played for us earlier this year (Mike with his own trio and Rob with Alice Zawadzki)\, we are certain that SoundCellar regulars will instantly wish to attend and will recommend this gig to anyone else who enquires! \nTicket link below \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT \nAs if that’s not exciting enough\, they also have a killer rhythm section of further SoundCellar ‘legends’ – bassist Joe Downard (Alex Hitchcock\, NYJO) and drummer Corrie Dick (Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, Rob Luft). Indeed they both have great solo albums themselves – Corrie’s ‘Impossible Things’ in particular\, is one of SoundCellar John’s absolute favourites and excitingly there’s a new one from him on the horizon too! \nMike Outram has played many times at SoundCellar since his debut for us in 2011\, featuring in different ensembles with amazing artists such as Roz Harding\, Karen Street\, Theo Travis\, Pete Callard\, Martin Speake\, Tony Woods\, and Paul & Jeremy Stacey. No matter who he has been playing with\, his mastery of the guitar has always been a major talking point after the gig\, by our discerning audiences! \nHe has also worked and recorded with such luminaries as Steven Wilson\, Carleen Anderson\, Tim Garland\, Asaf Sirkis\, Gareth Lockrane\, Robert Fripp\, Hamish Stuart\, Laurence Cottle\, Julian Siegel\, Nikki Iles\, Laura Rossi & many others. He is Guitar Professor at The Royal Academy of Music\, Trinity Laban & The Guildhall\, London. \n‘world-class’\nJohn Fordham\, The Guardian \n‘The star of the show for my money is guitarist Mike Outram\, whose blazing work sounds to me like a cross between Allan Holdsworth and Frank Zappa’\nBrad Walseth\, Jazz Chicago\n\nRob Luft is an award-winning 28-year-old jazz guitarist from London\, whose virtuosity has been compared to that of six-string legends John McLaughlin\, Al Di Meola & Paco De Lucia. He was the recipient of the 2016 Kenny Wheeler Prize from the Royal Academy of Music\, and he also received the 2nd Prize in the 2016 Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival. \nHis debut album\, “Riser”\, was released on Edition Records in 2017 to widespread acclaim from the European jazz media. John Fordham wrote in The Guardian that it’s a “very sophisticated debut\, but given Luft’s old-soul achievements since his early teens\, we should have heard it coming”. Subsequently\, on the back of the success of his first album\, Rob was nominated for a string of awards – Breakthrough Act in the 2018 Jazz FM Awards\, Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2020 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Jazz FM Awards. In May 2019\, Rob was selected as a BBC New Generation Jazz Artist. \nRob’s eagerly-awaited second album\, “Life is the Dancer”\, was released in April 2020 on Edition Records to critical acclaim. Despite the intermittent global lockdowns of 2020\, Rob made his debut appearance on the legendary German jazz label ECM Records with the album “Lost Ships\, a collaborative effort with Swiss-Albanian singer Elina Duni\, and this was nominated in the ‘International Album of the Year’ category in the 2021 German Jazz Prize. \nHaving also released a collaborative album with Dave O’Higgins and appeared as sideman on many other wonderful albums\, Rob has recently recorded his third solo album\, which will be released in 2023 on Edition Records. \n“Guitar virtuoso makes enticingly vivacious debut”\nThe Guardian\n \n“So young and so talented!”\nJamie Cullum\, BBC R2\n \nLine-up\nMike Outram – Guitar\nRob Luft – Guitar\nJoe Downard – Bass\nCorrie Dick – Drums \nEntry is £13 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £15 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event

SUMMARY:Postponed - THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, this October we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nPlease note: This gig will take place on SUNDAY 16th Oct at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT \nTicket link below \nTwo people\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington\, playing 13 instruments\, they perform in the centre of a circle of instruments that has been described as their ‘musical space station’ and ‘instrumental laboratory’. Their music combines ethereal vocals with multi-layered combinations of acoustic instruments such as guitar and mandola\, rock instruments including electric guitar\, bass and percussion\, plus piano\, organ\, electronica\, orchestral and symphonic sounds\, omnichords and their collection of vintage synthesisers. The music is emotional with Metal Planet saying “Their music reaches areas of your head and heart that you never knew existed.” \nThey draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a truly unique sound\, frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Steve Reich\, Philip Glass\, Portishead and Kate Bush. Simultaneously symphonic and psychedelic\, classical and totally contemporary. \nAfter 1000+ gigs from Southampton to Sydney and 6 acclaimed albums\, they’ve performed everywhere from intimate venues to London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall\, sharing stages with everyone from Hawkwind to Eric Clapton. \nThe band’s most recent album ‘Mesmeranto’ reached #16 in the UK Indie Chart\, #18 in the UK Rock Chart\, #4 in the USA’s Big Takeover Albums of the Year and was voted twice in the Rock Writers’ Top 20 Albums of the Year. They won Best British Duo. They were voted #4 Best New Band in the UK. Chrissy Mostyn was recently voted #5 Best Female Vocalist in PROG Magazine’s Readers’ Poll\, and their lockdown online concert series The Big Armchair Concerts was voted #10 in Most Important Rock Events of 2020. \nThey will be performing songs from their wonderful back catalogue and from their soon to be released 7th album ‘Hotel Utopia’\, due out this summer. \nThey have been described as “A mesmerising powerhouse” and “An avant-garde musical utopia”. Louder Than War declared their music “A life-enhancing listening event”\, Steve Hackett of Genesis described it as “Powerful and inspiring” and fan Phil Campbell of Motörhead described it as “******* beautiful”. \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, long time fan John from the SoundCellar team and his more recently ‘converted’ colleague Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their UK tour to promote the new album. \nThis gig will be held at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nEntry is £13 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £15 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:MATT RIDLEY'S 'THE ANTIDOTE' QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:It has been a while since we had the excellent bass player and composer Matt Ridley at SoundCellar\, so we are thrilled to now welcome him back!  He comes to us with his quintet The Antidote\, all of whom are former ‘graduates’ of SoundCellar from various ensembles over the years! \nTicket link below \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT \nThe Antidote are an exciting young contemporary jazz quintet\, featuring leading lights of the UK scene. Brainchild of bassist Matt Ridley\, the music is firmly rooted within the contemporary jazz discipline\, and also emanates both rock overtones and classical influences\, evolved from decades of genuine passion for music. Matt inhabits his own space within the creative diaspora\, being able to navigate a broad spectrum of inspirations and transform them into a vibrant and exciting sound. \nThe Antidote features the formidable quintet of Alex Hitchcock on saxophone\, Ant Law on guitar\, Tom Hewson on piano\, Marc Michel on drums\, and of course Matt Ridley on bass. With an insistence on detailed\, expressive and thought-through compositions\, Ridley allows time and space for both himself and his band members to express and showcase both their individual and collective talents through dynamic improvisation. The synergy between the group and a mutual understanding of each players’ specific nuances are more than apparent\, while still allowing enough freedom for independent flair to shine though. \nCombining this with the more melodic and compositional aspects of the music makes for a truly engaging experience. Rather than a ‘leader + sidemen’ attitude\, Ridley has cultivated a genuine ‘band’ sound\, as Tom Hewson elucidates: \n“This project totally captured my imagination from the first minute of rehearsal. Matt has managed to create something full of incredible compositional range whilst staying totally grounded with this immediate\, unpretentious sense of energy. As someone that came to jazz through rock and prog\, I love that feeling of unshackling\, that desire not to hold back from. The whole band really bought into the spirit from the start – something you can really hear on the record\, and something that definitely comes across live.” \nThe eponymous debut album\, released in 2021\, is a firm favourite of SoundCellar’s John and received glowing reviews from across the globe from coveted publications such as Downbeat Magazine\, BBC Music Magazine\, Jazzwise\, Ivan Rod (Denmark)\, JazzMania (Belgium) and Presto Music. The album also received a nomination for ‘Best Jazz Album of 2021’ in the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards UK\, as well as making the Jazzwise ‘20 best jazz albums of 2021’ (worldwide) list. Incidentally\, John also highly recommends the digital-only release of three extra pieces “The Antidote Reloaded” on Matt’s Bandcamp page. \n‘One of the strongest releases by homegrown jazz talent in 2021′  **** Editors Choice\, Jazzwise Magazine \n‘His assuredness shines through in this set of taut\, modernist originals\, and his band are engaged and supportive’ **** BBC Music Magazine \n‘It’s both Ridley’s excellent usage of his collaborators and his penchant for melody that is undoubtedly the main appeal of his music’ Recording of the Week\, Presto Music \nLine-up\nMatt Ridley – Bass\nAlex Hitchcock – Sax\nAnt Law – Guitar\nTom Hewson – Keys\nMarc Michel – Drums \nMake sure you catch yet another wonderful young jazz ensemble that we are so pleased to be able to present for your delectation\, here in deepest Dorset! \nEntry is £13 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £15 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event
