SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: JO LAWRY'S ACROBATS TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Australian vocalist Jo Lawry brings her Acrobats Trio to SoundCellar\, in a special Friday evening performance at The Grasshopper. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nAustralian vocalist Jo Lawry has forged an impressive solo career with a global fan base\, while learning deep respect as a ‘musician’s singer’ within and beyond jazz circles. She’s also spent nearly a decade performing and recording with Sting and has worked with Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. The two albums she released as a singer/songwriter/producer\, Taking Pictures (2015) and The Bathtub and the Sea (2017) garnered critical acclaim. Now\, more than 10 years since her last solo jazz album\, Lawry presents her new live project and chordless band Acrobats Trio\, and album of the same name (Whirlwind Recordings\, FEB 2023)\, unequivocally returning to the genre alongside globally in-demand bassist Orlando le Fleming and versatile drummer Allison Miller (Linda May Han Oh features on double bass on the album). \nOrlando le Fleming is among the most proficient and accomplished bassists in the field of contemporary jazz. His virtuoso technique\, boundless creativity and powerful beat are those of a musician who has found himself\, humbly\, occupying a space in the uppermost stratum of American improvised music. \nOriginally from the UK\, Le Fleming’s 2003 move to New York City was a timely one. Soon after arriving stateside\, Orlando joined Jane Monheit’s band\, consequently sharing the bass duties on her 2004 release Taking a Chance on Love with Ron Carter and Christian McBride; the year following\, he recorded with jazz legend Jimmy Cobb. In the years since\, leaders as diverse as Branford Marsalis\, Joey Calderazzo\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Bill Charlap\, Billy Cobham\, Seamus Blake\, Wayne Krantz\, and David Sanchez have relied on Le Fleming’s firm beat and eloquent counterpoint to propel their rhythm sections forward. While he succeeds as a sideman\, Orlando has released several albums as a leader and co leader working alongside musicians such as Will Vinson\, Lage Lund\, Antonio Sanchez\, Kurt Elling\, Mark Turner and Jeff “Tain” Watts. \nAllison Miller is a NYC-based drummer/composer/teacher who engages her deep roots in improvisation as a vehicle to explore all music. Described by critics as a Modern Jazz Icon in the Making\, Miller won Downbeat magazine’s 67th Annual Critics Poll “Rising Star Drummer” and JazzTimes magazine’s Critics Poll. Her composition\, “Otis Was a Polar Bear”\, is included on NPR’s list of The 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women+. She is also the first recipient of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Commissioning Grant. In January 2020 Miller along with her band\, Boom Tic Boom\, tap dancer-Claudia Rahardjanoto\, and video designer-Todd Winkler premiered this new multimedia suite\, In Our Veins\, with a seven show tour sponsored by Jazz Touring Network and Mid Atlantic Arts. Miller\, a three time Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department\, was Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2019 Artist in Residence\, alongside bassist/producer Derrick Hodge. She is also a proud member of the critically acclaimed BlueNote recording supergroup Artemis. \nAs a side-musician\, Miller has been the rhythmic force behind such artists as Sara Bareilles\, Ani DiFranco\, Natalie Merchant\, Brandi Carlile\, Toshi Reagon\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Patricia Barber\, Marty Ehrlich\, Ben Allison\, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. \nJo Lawry – voice\nOrlando le Fleming – double bass\nAllison Miller – drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present MARK LOCKHEART for his SoundCellar debut\, when Mark brings his fabulous band ‘Dreamers’ here to Poole. This new all star group explores Mark’s multi-faceted outlook on music\, through a new set of original compositions that can be heard on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’. Urgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies. Wide ranging influences from Ellington and Shorter to John Zorn\, the Beatles and even Kraftwerk! \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT.\n \nTicket link below \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera (one of SoundCellar John’s absolute favourites). \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large orchestral works (e.g. 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’ is another of John’s favourites)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with pianist Huw Warren. \n“From Loose Tubes to Polar Bear and beyond\, Lockheart’s capacity to be ahead of the jazz curve is undeniable. In this new band his combination of lyrical economy and harmonic creativity has found three improvisatory soulmates who clearly know how to make the most of his compositions in their own terms” Jazzwise magazine \nMark’s new ensemble Dreamers includes a long overdue return to SoundCellar of Elliot Galvin on keys\, along with Tom Herbert on bass and an even longer overdue return of Dave Smith on drums. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine **** \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nPhotograph by Joel Baxter \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

\n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine **** \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nPhotograph by Joel Baxter \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:DUSKI
DESCRIPTION:DUSKI made their SoundCellar debut in 2018 and we felt it was time to have them back again – this time they come to us as a quartet. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT.\n \nTicket link below \nThe band began as a chordless trio in darkest Wales comprising of sax\, double bass and drums. Piano was added and slowly the jazz styles disappeared\, while heavy jams and collective improvising took its place. The piano morphed into different synthesisers and tape loops and the double bass cracked open to reveal its electric counterpart. Standard chord progression melted away to reveal the dark minimalist progressive rock band that is Duski. \n “A contemporary group playing fresh\, original music that deserves to be seen and heard” – The Jazz Mann \nDuski toured the UK three times to promote their eponymous debut album. During this process\, the band started developing new music that ended up dominating the set: a new album was on the horizon. The band entered Giant Wafer Studio in September 2018 and took three days to craft the album ‘Make a Wish’. Traditional form of melody and then lots of soloing took a sideline\, replaced by group improvisations based more on image and texture. Most of the album was recorded live in a few takes along with overdubbing. \n“Duski’s set shows originality\, quality and productive collaboration” – Nigel Jarrett\, Jazz Journal \n“‘Make A Wish’ is a world class album that should propel Duski to the forefront of the UK Jazz scene” – Francis Brown\, New Sounds Wales \nDuski’s sound evolved again throughout 2020’s lockdown\, the result of which is their most recent release 2021’s “Pillow Talk Sessions 1” on Ropeadope.  Conversations between tenor saxophone & double bass entwine; drawing out delicate notes that allow space for reflection with brooding overtones of tension ever-present. Aidan Thorne struts along the double bass\, bowing earthly drones for Greg Sterland’s searching tenor saxophone reminiscent of the considered European jazz leanings of early Portico Quartet. Another welcome addition to the impressive British jazz scene. \nThis SoundCellar gig will feature an eclectic mix of ‘Pillow Talk’ improvisations\, along with ‘Make A Wish’ group material – an evening not to be missed! \nAidan Thorne: Bass\nGreg Sterland: Saxes\nPaul Jones: Keyboards\nMatt Holmes: Drums \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA plus support FOXPALMER
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you The Blackheart Orchestra – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. Please note the 7:30pm start time.\n \nTicket link below \nTwo people playing 13 instruments between them\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a unique sound frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Portishead and Kate Bush as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. \nDescribed as an ”Avant garde musical utopia”\, they perform in their ‘musical space station’ of instruments including guitar\, bass\, percussion\, mandola\, piano\, organ\, omnichord and vintage synthesisers. After over 1000 concerts and now 7 albums\, they’ve played everywhere from Southampton to Sydney including London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall while piling up achievements from a nomination for the Progressive Music Limelight Award\, Best British Duo\, #4 Best New British Band\, and #10 Most Important Rock Event of 2020. \nMore recently their universally applauded 2022 album Hotel Utopia went straight into the UK Rock Chart at #13\, single If You Tolerate This made #22 in the iTunes chart and Chrissy Mostyn was voted #5 World Female Vocalist in Prog Magazine’s Readers’ Poll. \n“Epic” – Uncut \n“Ethereal” – Sunday Express \n“A life-enhancing listening experience” – Louder Than War \n“Reaches areas of your head and heart you never knew existed” – Metal Planet Music \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, both SoundCellar’s John and the more recently ‘converted’ Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra. Their SoundCellar gig scheduled in late 2022\, fell foul of an unfortunate injury for one of the band\, but all is now well\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their 2023 UK tour to promote the new album. \nLatest addition: Support act Foxpalmer has been announced for the tour and will open the evening at 7:30pm prompt \nFoxpalmer aka Fern McNulty is a London-based singer-songwriter. She combines the genres of acoustic\, rock and folk to create deep\, tearful and soulful music. Her unique sound\, original music and captivating live shows have won her considerable airplay and performances at a number of UK festivals including Godiva and Celtic Connections.\n“A strong connection can be made between Foxpalmer and Fleetwood Mac” – The Voice Magazine\n“A fantastic voice and acoustic playing reminiscent of Tracey Chapman” – Fireworks Magazine \nApproximate show timings:\nDoors open: 7pm\nFoxpalmer: 7:30pm – 8pm\ninterval: 8pm – 8:30pm\nThe Blackheart Orchestra: 8:30pm – 9:50pm \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:WANG / LUFT / FÄLT TRIO - CLOSENESS
DESCRIPTION:One of our unquestionable highlights of 2023 will be an appearance by the Wang / Luft / Fält Trio presenting their superb album Closeness\, along with some brand new material. Because of his passion for the band and a desire for them to be seen and heard on this side of the North Sea\, SoundCellar‘s John has stepped in and successfully arranged an 8-date tour of England & Wales for the band\, culminating in the final show here in Poole\, before they fly off to perform at a Festival in Sweden! \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nTicket link below \nBorn and raised in Norway\, bassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaborations with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, to performances at major Jazz Festivals\, to her appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio\, Wang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nEllen Andrea Wang’s third studio album\, Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. In what now seems prescient\, the album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and three selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman)\, Traditional (Wayfaring Stranger) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike. The Guardian \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ (eg as a BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now\, as we saw on two different occasions in 2022 at SoundCellar! In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in Oct 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release on ECM in 2023. \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. His lightness of touch\, coupled with a strong musical sensibility\, fits perfectly with this thrillingly dynamic ‘international’ trio. \n‘Closeness’ has received much critical acclaim since its release in September 2020\, such as: \nAlbum of the year 2020 – Vårt Land (Norwegian newspaper) \n4/5 stars “She is one of the best contemporary jazz artists” – Dagens Industri (Swedish newspaper) \n**** and ‘Editor’s choice’ for Nov 2020 – Jazzwise (UK magazine) \nHaving played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival and with dates in Germany and Norway coming up in April/May this year\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nEllen Andrea Wang: Bass and Vocals\nRob Luft: Guitar\nJon Fält: Drums and percussion \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

\nEllen Andrea Wang: Bass and Vocals\nRob Luft: Guitar\nJon Fält: Drums and percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

He has an MA in Multi-media Journalism from Edinburgh Napier University\, and 35 years of experience in journalism. He is a published novelist and poet\, and has been the editor of four local newspapers in Scotland after being a magazine section editor at Time Out\, London during its heyday years as a magazine. He has published one novel\, two collections of poetry and his work has been widely anthologised. His documentary film – Manna – Jazz and Survival in East Harlem – opened at the African World Film Festival\, Detroit in 2019. In a long creative career Peter has also been a TV and radio presenter. \nAs a pianist and composer Peter has worked for more than thirty years  in jazz and free improvisation. He has performed with saxophonist Evan Parker\, bassist Olie Brice\, vocalist Maggie Nicols and many others. He also composes new scores and performs live to classic and rare silent movies. In the last decade he has received seven major commissions for new scores to classic films\, ranging from Nosferatu to The Passion of Joan of Arc and Nanook of The North. \nPeter lives and works from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. \nSaxophonist Jon Lloyd arrived on the UK free jazz scene in the early 1990s and rose to prominence with recordings on Leo records and HatHut\, and with many UK and European concerts with his quartet comprising John Law\, Paul Rogers and Mark Sanders. Highlights during this period included Berlin’s FMP Festival\, several Arts Council tours and the 1993 Contemporary Music Network tour of the UK with the Bill Frisell Band! Over the years Jon has embraced contemporary composition\, abstract improv and American jazz and fusion\, but in the last decade has primarily developed his music towards the European jazz aesthetic\, notably recording “Vanishing Points” in 2013 with Asaf Sirkis\, Tom Farmer\, John Law and Rob Palmer. In 2022 Jon was involved with John Law’s multi-media “Renaissance”\, which toured in cathedrals throughout the UK\, and in 2023 he is busy promoting his European Contemporary Jazz quartet “The Jon Lloyd Quartet”. \nAs a multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer\, Al Swainger is both eclectic and transformative. His use of FX pedals and computer manipulation provide an extensive and original tonal palette with which to sculpt his music. His project Pointless Beauty’s most recent album ‘Hearts Full of Grace’ blends influences from ambient\, Latin\, rock\, pop and electronica with improvised music and presents is a very personal take on what jazz or progressive music could be. \nGuitarist Rob Palmer has worked with saxophonist Theo Travis\, pianist John Law\, vibes player Roger Beaujolais\, USA vocalist Lila Ammons\, violinist Phil Wachsmann\, vocalist Véronique Joly and is a member of the ambient/groove/electronica trio Echo Engine. \nPeter Urpeth – poetry/piano\nJon Lloyd – saxophone\nAl Swainger – bass/electronics\nRob Palmer – guitar/electronics \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
