SUMMARY:THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA plus support FOXPALMER
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you The Blackheart Orchestra – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\, 139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. Please note the 7:30pm start time.\n \nTicket link below \nTwo people playing 13 instruments between them\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a unique sound frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Portishead and Kate Bush as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. \nDescribed as an ”Avant garde musical utopia”\, they perform in their ‘musical space station’ of instruments including guitar\, bass\, percussion\, mandola\, piano\, organ\, omnichord and vintage synthesisers. After over 1000 concerts and now 7 albums\, they’ve played everywhere from Southampton to Sydney including London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall while piling up achievements from a nomination for the Progressive Music Limelight Award\, Best British Duo\, #4 Best New British Band\, and #10 Most Important Rock Event of 2020. \nMore recently their universally applauded 2022 album Hotel Utopia went straight into the UK Rock Chart at #13\, single If You Tolerate This made #22 in the iTunes chart and Chrissy Mostyn was voted #5 World Female Vocalist in Prog Magazine’s Readers’ Poll. \n“Epic” – Uncut \n“Ethereal” – Sunday Express \n“A life-enhancing listening experience” – Louder Than War \n“Reaches areas of your head and heart you never knew existed” – Metal Planet Music \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, both SoundCellar’s John and the more recently ‘converted’ Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra. Their SoundCellar gig scheduled in late 2022\, fell foul of an unfortunate injury for one of the band\, but all is now well\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their 2023 UK tour to promote the new album. \nLatest addition: Support act Foxpalmer has been announced for the tour and will open the evening at 7:30pm prompt \nFoxpalmer aka Fern McNulty is a London-based singer-songwriter. She combines the genres of acoustic\, rock and folk to create deep\, tearful and soulful music. Her unique sound\, original music and captivating live shows have won her considerable airplay and performances at a number of UK festivals including Godiva and Celtic Connections.\n“A strong connection can be made between Foxpalmer and Fleetwood Mac” – The Voice Magazine\n“A fantastic voice and acoustic playing reminiscent of Tracey Chapman” – Fireworks Magazine \nApproximate show timings:\nDoors open: 7pm\nFoxpalmer: 7:30pm – 8pm\ninterval: 8pm – 8:30pm\nThe Blackheart Orchestra: 8:30pm – 9:50pm \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:WANG / LUFT / FÄLT TRIO - CLOSENESS
DESCRIPTION:One of our unquestionable highlights of 2023 will be an appearance by the Wang / Luft / Fält Trio presenting their superb album Closeness\, along with some brand new material. Because of his passion for the band and a desire for them to be seen and heard on this side of the North Sea\, SoundCellar‘s John has stepped in and successfully arranged an 8-date tour of England & Wales for the band\, culminating in the final show here in Poole\, before they fly off to perform at a Festival in Sweden! \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nTicket link below \nBorn and raised in Norway\, bassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaborations with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, to performances at major Jazz Festivals\, to her appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio\, Wang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nEllen Andrea Wang’s third studio album\, Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. In what now seems prescient\, the album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and three selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman)\, Traditional (Wayfaring Stranger) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike. The Guardian \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ (eg as a BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now\, as we saw on two different occasions in 2022 at SoundCellar! In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in Oct 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release on ECM in 2023. \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. His lightness of touch\, coupled with a strong musical sensibility\, fits perfectly with this thrillingly dynamic ‘international’ trio. \n‘Closeness’ has received much critical acclaim since its release in September 2020\, such as: \nAlbum of the year 2020 – Vårt Land (Norwegian newspaper) \n4/5 stars “She is one of the best contemporary jazz artists” – Dagens Industri (Swedish newspaper) \n**** and ‘Editor’s choice’ for Nov 2020 – Jazzwise (UK magazine) \nHaving played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival and with dates in Germany and Norway coming up in April/May this year\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nEllen Andrea Wang: Bass and Vocals\nRob Luft: Guitar\nJon Fält: Drums and percussion \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: PETER URPETH with Jon Lloyd\, Al Swainger and Rob Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Writer and pianist Peter Urpeth will be joined by saxophonist Jon Lloyd\, bassist and sonic manipulator Al Swainger and guitarist Rob Palmer for an evening of poetry and ambient jazz. Peter will be performing his poetry from “The 4000 Nights of New York in 1988”\, his latest anthology.\n \nLivestream Ticket link below \nPeter Urpeth is a writer\, journalist\, editor\, writing and creativity mentor\, pianist\, composer and creative business consultant. He has an MA in Multi-media Journalism from Edinburgh Napier University\, and 35 years of experience in journalism. He is a published novelist and poet\, and has been the editor of four local newspapers in Scotland after being a magazine section editor at Time Out\, London during its heyday years as a magazine. He has published one novel\, two collections of poetry and his work has been widely anthologised. His documentary film – Manna – Jazz and Survival in East Harlem – opened at the African World Film Festival\, Detroit in 2019. In a long creative career Peter has also been a TV and radio presenter. \nAs a pianist and composer Peter has worked for more than thirty years  in jazz and free improvisation. He has performed with saxophonist Evan Parker\, bassist Olie Brice\, vocalist Maggie Nicols and many others. He also composes new scores and performs live to classic and rare silent movies. In the last decade he has received seven major commissions for new scores to classic films\, ranging from Nosferatu to The Passion of Joan of Arc and Nanook of The North. \nPeter lives and works from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. \nSaxophonist Jon Lloyd arrived on the UK free jazz scene in the early 1990s and rose to prominence with recordings on Leo records and HatHut\, and with many UK and European concerts with his quartet comprising John Law\, Paul Rogers and Mark Sanders. Highlights during this period included Berlin’s FMP Festival\, several Arts Council tours and the 1993 Contemporary Music Network tour of the UK with the Bill Frisell Band! Over the years Jon has embraced contemporary composition\, abstract improv and American jazz and fusion\, but in the last decade has primarily developed his music towards the European jazz aesthetic\, notably recording “Vanishing Points” in 2013 with Asaf Sirkis\, Tom Farmer\, John Law and Rob Palmer. In 2022 Jon was involved with John Law’s multi-media “Renaissance”\, which toured in cathedrals throughout the UK\, and in 2023 he is busy promoting his European Contemporary Jazz quartet “The Jon Lloyd Quartet”. \nAs a multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer\, Al Swainger is both eclectic and transformative. His use of FX pedals and computer manipulation provide an extensive and original tonal palette with which to sculpt his music. His project Pointless Beauty’s most recent album ‘Hearts Full of Grace’ blends influences from ambient\, Latin\, rock\, pop and electronica with improvised music and presents is a very personal take on what jazz or progressive music could be. \nGuitarist Rob Palmer has worked with saxophonist Theo Travis\, pianist John Law\, vibes player Roger Beaujolais\, USA vocalist Lila Ammons\, violinist Phil Wachsmann\, vocalist Véronique Joly and is a member of the ambient/groove/electronica trio Echo Engine. \nPeter Urpeth – poetry/piano\nJon Lloyd – saxophone\nAl Swainger – bass/electronics\nRob Palmer – guitar/electronics \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:CORRIE DICK 'SUN SWELLS'
DESCRIPTION:Having played at SoundCellar last year as drummer with the Outram/Luft Quartet\, we were keen to have CORRIE DICK back to lead his own ensemble for us for the first time since 2016. This time he brings with him some of the best musicians playing in the UK today\, not least undoubted SoundCellar favourites Laura Jurd on trumpet and Rob Luft on guitar\, together with vocalist Rebecka Edlund and bassist Caius Williams. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nTicket link below \nAs has been articulated elsewhere\, Corrie has established himself at the “…rhythmic epicentre of a new era of innovative British jazz”. His first album under his own name 2015’s ‘Impossible Things’ remains one of those albums that captures and highlights the outstanding quality of a whole generation of musicians that have emerged from the UK touring scene over the last decade or so. \nHe has built this reputation in collaborations with such luminaries as Mark Lockheart\, Jake Long and Jasper Hoiby\, as well as by being a crucial member of such innovative bands as the Rob Luft Group\, the Elliot Galvin Trio\, of Laura Jurd’s numerous ensembles including the Mercury Music Prize shortlisted Dinosaur and of elusive and alternative bands Ink Line and I Don’t Need Light\, Please Give Me Water. \nCorrie’s latest album ‘Sun Swells’ was released (on Ubuntu Music) last year and it has taken another step forward with its mix of Scottish\, Scandinavian\, African and English jazz and folk influences\, together with electronic and rock overtones. To quote Corrie himself: “I wanted to write a jazz album that had rock instrumentation at its core: guitar-bass-drums. Rob Luft (guitar)\, Tom McCredie (bass) and I have been improvising and writing together for years and years and we’ve forged a sound that is uniquely crunchy yet summery\, so I wanted that sound at the centre but decorated with all sorts of elements. I basically wanted to make folk-rock-jazz but treat it how electronic music producer Mura Masa treats his tracks–chucking the whole damn fruit bowl at the thing but somehow keeping space and air in the arrangement and the mix.” \nFor their SoundCellar performance\, Corrie is bringing a great group of musicians and we are really looking forward to the evening. \n“The trumpeter [Laura Jurd] herself and expressive drummer Corrie Dick are both sensations who have made big names for themselves straight out of the blocks. Compared to other genres\, jazz doesn’t really thrive on hype. Their secret is just that they’re really\, really good.” (London Jazz News) \n“Corrie Dick is one of the most gifted drummers I’ve come across in recent years; he’s well on his way to being a visionary both as a musician and composer. With such vibrance and flair there is no doubt in my mind that he will soon assert himself as one of the finest contemporary percussionists on the UK scene.” (NY saxophonist and SoundCellar alumni\, Will Vinson) \nCorrie Dick: Drums\, Percussion\nRebecka Edlund: Voice\nLaura Jurd: Trumpet\nRob Luft: Guitar\nCaius Williams: Bass \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:DAVE MANINGTON'S RIFF RAFF
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back Dave Manington‘s Riff Raff to SoundCellar as part of a UK tour. The 6 piece band (featuring Ivo Neame on piano) produce music that is intimate and creative\, with a delicate interplay forged from many years performing together. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nBassist and composer Dave Manington is one of the mainstays of the London jazz scene\, a founder member of the Loop Collective\, he has played with many of the pre-eminent jazz musicians in the UK and Europe including Julian Arguelles\, Marius Neset and Gwilym Simcock amongst many others. He co-founded the Loop Collective to pool creative resources with other like-minded musicians. His debut quartet album “Headrush” was released on Loop Records in 2008 to critical acclaim. He followed this up with two albums from his band “Riff Raff”\, which were described as “Inventive\, forward-looking jazz that subtly pushes the envelope whilst remaining thoroughly accessible to the listener.” The Jazzmann. He is also a founder member of the much-respected e17 jazz collective\, Tori Freestone’s Trio\, Solstice and Yazz Ahmed’s Quartet. Dave was nominated for an Ivor Novello award for jazz composition in 2022. \nThe group also features a cast of SoundCellar ‘alumni’: vocalist Brigitte Beraha (Kenny Wheeler\, London Jazz Orchestra)\, pianist Ivo Neame (Phronesis\, Marius Neset)\, saxophonist Tom Challenger (Foufolah/Red Snapper)\, guitarist Rob Updegraff (Beth Rowley/Zigaboo Modeliste) and drummer Tim Giles (Iain Ballamy/Art Farmer). The music is sophisticated and full of virtuoso playing\, sometimes freely improvised with an exciting element of risk\, but the song forms\, melodic nature and the empathy and great ensemble playing of the group make it highly accessible. \n“Riff Raff mix the leader’s clever composing with a formidable lineup\, …and the soundscape embraces a 21st century sax-led cool school sound\, raw guitar-fusion\, diffident Wayne Shorteresque lyricism\, and vocals that showcase Beraha’s eloquent lyrics and inventiveness as a wordless improviser.” The Guardian  \n“It also grooves like hell\, with some thick mercurial riffs – full of stops\, starts\, and turns yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum.” Jazzwise \nDave Manington – bass\nBrigitte Beraha – vocals\nIvo Neame – piano\nTom Challenger – saxophone\nRob Updegraff – guitar\nTim Giles – drums \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: DAVE MANINGTON'S RIFF RAFF
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back Dave Manington‘s Riff Raff to SoundCellar as part of a UK tour. The 6 piece band (featuring Ivo Neame on piano) produce music that is intimate and creative\, with a delicate interplay forged from many years performing together. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nBassist and composer Dave Manington is one of the mainstays of the London jazz scene\, a founder member of the Loop Collective\, he has played with many of the pre-eminent jazz musicians in the UK and Europe including Julian Arguelles\, Marius Neset and Gwilym Simcock amongst many others. \n“Riff Raff mix the leader’s clever composing with a formidable lineup\, …and the soundscape embraces a 21st century sax-led cool school sound\, raw guitar-fusion\, diffident Wayne Shorteresque lyricism\, and vocals that showcase Beraha’s eloquent lyrics and inventiveness as a wordless improviser.” The Guardian  \n“It also grooves like hell\, with some thick mercurial riffs – full of stops\, starts\, and turns yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum.” Jazzwise \nDave Manington – bass\nBrigitte Beraha – vocals\nIvo Neame – piano\nTom Challenger – saxophone\nRob Updegraff – guitar\nTim Giles – drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

Nick is also a passionate teacher and has had the great opportunity to teach as a guest both the Guildhall School of music and the Royal Academy of Music. \nNick’s bandmates Jay Davis and Dave Whitford are stalwarts of the UK jazz scene\, performing in a broad range of styles at the absolute highest level. As a young music student in the late 2000s Nick was inspired to hear these two perform together on London’s buzzing grassroots contemporary jazz scene with bands such as Round Trip. It’s now with great pleasure that Nick has the opportunity to collaborate and perform so frequently with them as contemporaries. \n“I was struck by the sheer presence and melodic heft and ease of Nick Costley-White’s playing. The ideas flow naturally\, the sound is gorgeous\, there’s just nothing missing” Sebastian Scotney\, London Jazz News \nNick Costley-White: guitar\nDave Whitford: acoustic bass\nJay Davis: drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
