SUMMARY:MARK LOCKHEART / JOHN PARRICELLI
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to present two legends of the UK music scene\, when we welcome back Mark Lockheart and have John Parricelli making his SoundCellar debut alongside him. \n \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \n“…typically robust shredding from Parricelli and biting soprano from the leader.” UK Jazz News \nThis captivating new duo features ingenious Loose Tubes legends Mark and John in an intimate setting exploring evocative soundscapes and grooves. Playing their own original material\, as well as reinterpreting some of the modern jazz repertoire\, they promise a unique and characteristically fascinating evening of music. \nAs well as being long-time close friends\, this pair of UK greats have collaborated many times over the years\, starting off in the 1980s with Loose Tubes\, the wildly exuberant\, viscerally thrilling and eclectic big band that became the first jazz orchestra to play at the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall\, as well as appearing on Wogan\, The Tube and A Plus 4! \nSince the demise of the Tubers\, the somewhat telepathic John and Mark have collaborated many times including on John’s beautiful 2000 album Alba\, Mark’s 2019 release Days On Earth and more recently Mark’s 2024 recording Smiling\, which heavily features the multi-faceted guitar playing of John in a 13-strong band. \nBetween them they have played with a dizzying array of the world’s music scene including Kenny Wheeler\, Dave Holland\, Norma Winstone\, Lee Konitz\, Vince Mendoza\, Peter Erskine\, June Tabor\, Andy Sheppard\, Lars Danielsson\, Colin Towns\, Mark-Anthony Turnage\, M People\, Thomas Dolby and Radiohead. \nMark’s work as a member of experimental quintet Polar Bear helped to earn the band two Mercury Music Prize nominations as well as (for Held On The Tips Of Fingers) an inclusion in The Guardian’s list of 1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die. A unique stylist\, and memorable composer for larger ensembles as well as small groups\, he was chosen in 2010 as Jazz Musician of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Jazzwise said “From Loose Tubes to Polar Bear and beyond\, Lockheart’s capacity to be ahead of the jazz curve is undeniable.” \nThe first call for sessions across the board\, incredibly versatile John counts performances on numerous film scores among his work\, including Captain Corelli’s Mandolin\, which also found him teaching Nicholas Cage to play the mandolin convincingly on screen! A stingingly inventive soloist\, his playing also has a flowing\, delicate side\, as heard on the ACT album Trio last year with bassist Danielsson and trumpeter Verneri Pohjola\, Jazz Views declaring: “Parricelli’s guitar has a beautiful\, clear tone\, each note picked with deliberate precision.” \nHear them afresh in this new\, open and exciting musical context\, which will leave ample room for these two masters to strut their stuff. \nMark Lockheart: saxes & clarinets\nJohn Parricelli: guitars \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:London-based guitarist TOM OLLENDORFF is fast becoming one of the best-known young guitarists on the international jazz scene. He returns to SoundCellar with acclaimed bassist VIKTOR NYBERG and the outstanding Italian drummer FRANCESCO CINIGLIO. \nTicket link below \nThis autumn guitarist Tom Ollendorff embarks on a world tour with his group to promote the release of his highly anticipated album ‘Atlantic Angels’. Tom has undoubtedly become one of the most exciting talents to emerge from the United Kingdom in recent times. He combines a lyrical sensibility with an elegant use of space and silence and a stunning rhythmic ease which have forged a seductive sound that adds to his appeal. \nTom will be performing with two of Europe’s finest musicians\, drummer Francesco Ciniglio (Wynton Marsalis\, Aaron Parks) and bassist Victor Nyberg. \nHis debut album A Song For You (2021) received international acclaim\, followed by Open House (2023)\, featuring his long-term trio and saxophonist Ben Wendel. That same year\, he also released Enchanted\, a co-led project with drummer Ari Hoenig. In 2024\, his first solo album\, Solo Volume 1\, was released on Ubuntu Records\, alongside solo performances at major festivals. \nKnown for his virtuosic technique and refined harmonic style\, Tom has gained recognition both as a performer and composer. His solo guitar book Etudes (Faber Music) has reached audiences worldwide. Tom has been fortunate to work extensively as a sideman with a wide range of artists including Ari Hoenig\, Bill McHenry\, Geoff Simkins\, Aaron Parks\, Huw Warren\, Tim Garland\, Nitai Hershkovits\, Ben Wendel and The Fresh Sound Ensemble. \nTom Ollendorff often reclaims jazz guitar-playing’s classic past\, but he also understands its fast-changing present (The Guardian) \n‘Meticulous eloquence’ (The Guardian) \nTom Ollendorff is making his quiet way towards ubiquity\, all in the most charmingly well-manicured way imaginable. His appeal is not hard to understand: a combination of fearsome musical chops\, ambitiously sophisticated compositional sensibility and an unashamedly tuneful upbeat musical personality is very hard to resist. (Jazzwise) \nTom Ollendorff: guitar\nVictor Nyberg: bass\nFrancesco Ciniglio: drums \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event

SUMMARY:DONOVAN HAFFNER QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Stop Press: 2025 Parliamentary Jazz Awards ‘Best Newcomer’ was awarded to Donovan on 14th October! See him now\, while you can! \nMaking his Poole debut as band leader\, alto saxophonist\, Donovan Haffner could almost be described as one of the best kept secrets on the London jazz scene for the last 3 or 4 years\, but all that is set to change with the release of his debut album Alleviate. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nAged 11\, Donovan joined the highly respected Tomorrow’s Warriors Young Artist Development Programme and was mentored by Gary Crosby OBE\, Binker Golding\, and Alex Davis. He proved to be a stand-out talent and\, by the age of 18\, he was invited to tour Italy with multi-award-winning drummer Moses Boyd. \nSince then\, Donovan has played with Jay Phelps\, Charlie Stacey\, and Balimaya. He has also performed with the Danish jazz pianist/composer Rasmus Sorenson and was selected by Tony Kofi to be part of American jazz legend\, Charles Tolliver’s Big Band\, headlining at The Barbican as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.  And Donovan is still very much part of the Tomorrow’s Warriors musical family\, performing with both Nu Civilisation Orchestra and JazzJamaica. \nHowever\, it is his growing reputation as a bandleader and composer in his own right that is set to see Donovan come to the attention of jazz fans across the country. \nIf you have already been lucky enough to catch Donovan play live in a venue (including London’s Ronnie Scott’s\, The Jazz Cafe\, and Pizza Express Live) or at a festival (We Out Here\, Love Supreme)\, then you will have been struck not just by the drive and sophistication of his playing\, but also how he interprets his own compositions. To see him leading his quintet is to go on a journey with him through the music he loves\, straight ahead and contemporary jazz – drawing on the inspiration of the musicians that have influenced him\, including Kenny Garrett\, Freddie Hubbard\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Joe Henderson\, Wayne Shorter\, and SoundCellar ‘legend’ Walter Smith III – but enhanced with his own distinctive compositional style. \nRecorded with his quintet\, Donovan’s debut album Alleviate is a vitally exciting contemporary jazz recording\, that reflects Donovan Haffner’s burgeoning talent in a glowing light. This essential body of work will undoubtedly position the young musician as a rising jazz star and one of 2025’s breakthrough artists. \n“Saxophonist Donovan Haffner’s debut LP\, Alleviate\, is an absolutely awesome debut and a really amazing release. SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - DONOVAN HAFFNER QUARTET
\nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nAged 11\, Donovan joined the highly respected Tomorrow’s Warriors Young Artist Development Programme and was mentored by Gary Crosby OBE\, Binker Golding\, and Alex Davis. SUMMARY:LEVY/ROBSON INTERNATIONAL QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Formed in NYC in 2017\, US saxophonist JED LEVY and British guitarist PHIL ROBSON bring their international quartet to SoundCellar\, featuring Italian drummer ROBERTO GATTO and British bassist MARK HODGSON. Their innovative\, melodic jazz blends tradition with contemporary grooves\, captivating audiences at iconic venues worldwide. \nTicket link below \nThis musical partnership was formed in New York City in 2017 between the highly acclaimed US saxophonist JED LEVY (Jaki Byard\, Jack McDu/\, Mike Clark\, Tom Harrell etc) and multi-award-winning UK born guitarist PHIL ROBSON (Mark Turner\, David Liebman\, Billy Hart\, Partisans\, etc)\, who was living in NYC at the time. The American quartet featuring Peter Slavov and Clarence Penn quickly began to become a regular feature in the city’s iconic venues such as Smalls\, Birdland\, 55 Bar etc\, as well as touring in the UK\, Germany\, Spain\, Ireland\, Northern California and more. Robson relocated to Ireland in 2020\, but since that time the collaboration has continued with various European incarnations of the band. \nThe current line-up features one of Europe’s most celebrated drummers\, from Rome\, ROBERTO GATTO (Freddie Hubbard\, John Scofield\, Joe Zawinul\, Michael Brecker\, etc) and the incredible UK bassist MARK HODGSON (Randy Brecker\, Cedar Walton\, Eddie Henderson\, Greg Osby\, etc) who is one of the most in demand bassists on the contemporary jazz scene today. \nThe quartet plays original music penned by both Levy and Robson. The music is innovative and contemporary whilst remaining highly melodic and groovy\, with a strong sense of tradition mixed in with the diverse characteristics of each composer. \n“This was high-powered jazz\, not by dint of frenetic pace\, volume or assertiveness but by the beauty and coherence of the quartet sound that was at once polished but fresh and lively. That’s a difficult poise to strike\, even for musicians as able as these\, yet for all that they were fully engaged\, each seemed entirely in his element.” The Whitman Review of Wakefield Jazz Concert \n“Added to the warmth of his sound and excellent command of the instrument\, Levy is an impressive package deserving wider international recognition. Phil Robson is already gaining wider international recognition\, as witnessed by the admiring comments on his playing from Peter Bernstein and Wayne Krantz to be found on his website. His great fluidity and fleet inventiveness were\, as ever\, balm for the ears.” London Jazz News \nJed Levy: Sax\nPhil Robson: Guitar\nMark Hodgson: Bass\nRoberto Gatto: Drums \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \n  \nShare this event

SUMMARY:THEO TRAVIS' DOUBLE TALK
DESCRIPTION:SoundCellar are excited to welcome back acclaimed saxophonist Theo Travis fronting his band Double Talk. Operating at the fluid interface between jazz\, ambient and prog this four piece band also features Mike Outram on guitar\, Pete Whittaker on Hammond organ and Nic France on drums. \nTicket link below \nHis many musical interests come together in this distinctive project. Described on BBC Radio 2 as “One of the very best young tenor saxophonists of this or any other jazz generation in Britain”\, he has appeared on over 175 albums and played at Ronnie Scott’s in London over 70 times. A long time member and co-leader of the classic jazz rock band Soft Machine\, Theo Travis has also worked with Robert Fripp\, David Gilmour\, David Sylvian\, Steven Wilson\, John Etheridge\, Gong and Keith Tippett amongst others. He has performed all over the world including the USA\, Canada\, Japan\, Europe\, Scandinavia and the UK. Theo has released 2 albums with Double Talk\, both critically and popularly acclaimed. \nThe band features Theo’s emotional tenor and soprano saxes and flute\, the soulful hammond organ playing of Pete Whittaker\, the explosive guitar solos of Mike Outram and the powerhouse drumming of Nic France. This will be an evening of passionate music and haunting instrumental songs from one of Britain’s top saxophonists and flautists and his band. Don’t miss! www.theotravis.com\n \n“As a saxophonist\, Travis can bridge swing-sax romanticism\, Ronnie Laws funkiness\, or a little of Andy Sheppard’s quirky\, asymmetrical phrasing. As a flautist who sparingly deploys hypnotic electronic assistance\, he can be as poetically minimalist as any ECM Records star. But he can be a headlong groover too\, and there’s plenty of that on the Double Talk project\, with its fierce organ-blasting\, driving guitar soloing from the gifted Mike Outram\, and no-prisoners drumming from the excellent Nic France” Jazz UK \n” Travis’ tenor is a warm\, mellifluous instrument and together with the luscious\, bluesy Hammond organ they create something rather unexpected…a prog-rock/jazz/blues hybrid album of genuine power and excitement “ BBC Website \n“Theo’s powerful bluesy sax playing should be enough to convince that he’s certainly one of the most intelligently accessible players around”  Venue \n“for those whose tastes run the gamut from pop and rock to prog\, ambient and\, of course\, jazz\, Double Talk is an album that pays big dividends for an artist (and group) that deserves to emerge from hidden treasure status” All About Jazz (USA)\n \nTheo Travis: tenor and soprano saxes\, flutes\nMike Outram: guitar\nPete Whittaker: hammond organ\nNic France: drums\, percussion \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - THEO TRAVIS' DOUBLE TALK
DESCRIPTION:SoundCellar are excited to welcome back acclaimed saxophonist Theo Travis fronting his band Double Talk. Operating at the fluid interface between jazz\, ambient and prog this four piece band also features Mike Outram on guitar\, Pete Whittaker on Hammond organ and Nic France on drums. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nHis many musical interests come together in this distinctive project. But he can be a headlong groover too\, and there’s plenty of that on the Double Talk project\, with its fierce organ-blasting\, driving guitar soloing from the gifted Mike Outram\, and no-prisoners drumming from the excellent Nic France” Jazz UK \n” Travis’ tenor is a warm\, mellifluous instrument and together with the luscious\, bluesy Hammond organ they create something rather unexpected…a prog-rock/jazz/blues hybrid album of genuine power and excitement “ BBC Website \n“Theo’s powerful bluesy sax playing should be enough to convince that he’s certainly one of the most intelligently accessible players around”  Venue \n“for those whose tastes run the gamut from pop and rock to prog\, ambient and\, of course\, jazz\, Double Talk is an album that pays big dividends for an artist (and group) that deserves to emerge from hidden treasure status” All About Jazz (USA)\n \nTheo Travis: tenor and soprano saxes\, flutes\nMike Outram: guitar\nPete Whittaker: hammond organ\nNic France: drums\, percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
