SUMMARY:THE EDDIE GRIPPER TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Rising star pianist/composer Eddie Gripper makes his SoundCellar debut with his trio featuring Ursula Harrison on bass and Patrick Barrett-Donlon on drums. The trio come to SoundCellar as part of national tour to promote their debut album HOME released on Ubuntu Music. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nBorn and raised in Burford\, Oxfordshire\, Eddie first started learning the piano at age 11. In 2019\, he began to study Jazz under the tutelage of Huw Warren at Cardiff University\, graduating with First Class Honours in 2021. Since then\, Eddie has established himself as a prominent pianist/improviser\, composer\, and educator in the Southwest region\, expressing a broad interest in musical styles\, including jazz\, folk and electronic music. \nHome\, Eddie’s debut album\, consists of a traditional trio format and exhibits a keen rhythmic focus. The development of this vocabulary is evident from beginning to end; metrically challenging grooves are paired with rich\, elegant harmonies\, culminating in an outcome that is both provocative and gratifying. The stylistic range of compositions (through choice of instrumentation and arrangement) helps to support an overall\, arcing narrative. Each track is a journey through time and space – beginning and finishing at a familiar and comforting destination before moving onto new or subtly developed ideas. The trio breathes together as one homogeneous sound\, with individual players taking to the spotlight to elaborate on their own interpretations of the music at hand. \n“In it’s maturity of approach and deftness of execution\, Home is a significant achievement by any standards” – ★★★★ \nPeter Jones (Jazzwise) \n“One of the best début recordings I have heard for a long time. Gripper is a multi-faceted writer and his compositions are full of delightful and unexpected twists and turns.” – ★★★★ \nIan Mann (The Jazz Mann) \n“Eddie Gripper\, unusually for his age\, has an uncommon ability to sit with understatement in his music. Gestures can be used sparingly and musically and he plays and writes very dynamically allowing his trio to interact naturally\, and indeed to shine. A musical voice that brings talent and modesty to the table- I look forward to hearing lots more from Eddie and his trio over the coming years.” \n“An original and fresh voice on the UK jazz scene. A highly eclectic range of compositions that showcase a really individual approach. Definitely a name to look out for in 2023”\n \nHuw Warren \n“As for someone always on the lookout for the new interesting names in jazz music\, discovering Eddie Gripper has been a true pleasure for me. I have just finished listening to his debut album “Home“\, and I found it full of little gems – both from the point of view of composition and performance. His is quite a sophisticated music\, sometimes with intricate time signatures\, rhythms and harmonies which yet never seem to be the goal “per se”: these pieces always sound beautiful and accessible. Listening to such a work full of sparkling creativity gave me a lot of joy: thanks to the talented young musicians like Eddie and his Trio\, modern jazz is not only kept alive\, but the new horizons are constantly being set in this genre. \nI wish this band every success\, and I really hope that the promoters across the UK and further afield will notice their music and invite them to perform at a multitude of venues thus ensuring that the level of modern jazz is maintained at its highest.” \nYuri Golubev  \nEddie Gripper: Piano\nUrsula Harrison: Bass\nPatrick Barrett-Donlon: Drums \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

By turns virtuoso\, lyrical\, and naively sentimental – Choro Choro Choro brings new twists on this great dance music and is guaranteed to leave you smiling! \nHuw Warren has created several previous projects around the music of Brazil\, including collaborations with Jovino Santos Neto; a critically acclaimed recording of Hermeto’s music (‘Hermeto+’) in 2009; a trio record for CAM Jazz ‘Everything in Between’ in 2019 and ‘Core Coracao’ from 2017 with Maria Pia de Vito\, Gabriele Mirabassi\, Roberto Taufic\, and the legendary Chico Buarque. \n Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has achieved an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making\, over a thirty year career. Equally at home crossing the often exclusive worlds of Jazz\, World and Contemporary music; he has a distinctive and personal voice\, and has collaborated with a huge variety of artists worldwide \nHuw has recorded 2 albums for ECM (as Quercus with June Tabor and SoundCellar favourite Iain Ballamy) and in 2018 released a solo piano recording Nocturnes and Visions. In 2019 he released 2 albums for Italian label CAM Jazz Everything in Between (with Dudley Phillips and Zoot Warren) and New Day (with another firm SoundCellar favourite Mark Lockheart). His previous albums and projects have included themes and source material as diverse as John Dowland\, Plainchant and Hermeto Pascoal. In 2024\, as well as releasing his solo piano recording ‘Choro Choro Choro’\, Huw has also released ‘Calennig’ an album of Plygain arrangements with singer Angharad Jenkins. \nHis appearance with the famed Perfect Houseplants (alongside Mark Lockheart\, Dudley Phillips & Martin France) at last year’s Swanage Jazz Festival was the stuff of legends. He has also performed and collaborated with luminaries such as Mark Feldman\, Peter Herbert\, Joanna Macgregor\, Iain Ballamy\, Kenny Wheeler\, Jim Black\, Theo Bleckmann\, Neil Yates\, Pamela Thorby\, Mose Se Fan Fan\, Mat Maneri and Thomas Strønen. \nIn addition to receiving many awards and writing for a whole range of orchestral and jazz ensembles\, Huw is currently a jazz lecturer/tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) and is also head of Jazz Ensembles at Cardiff University. \nChoro Choro Choro features an international line up including a welcome return to SoundCellar of Anglo/Spanish flautist Tori Freestone and Russian bassist Yuri Goloubev\, together with a SoundCellar debut by Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale. Tori has played at SoundCellar on a number of occasions and was last seen here in the very first gig held at The Grasshopper in May 2022 (in Andre Canniere’s sextet). \n“Finally\, a special word for Huw Warren’s solo interpretation of Hermeto’s Mente Clara (clear mind)\, whose emotive\, sustained and lush harmonies\, combined with pellucid runs\, are delivered so affectingly. Words\, on this occasion\, cannot do it justice” – London Jazz News \n“Apart from the joyful pleasure it created in abundance\, this concert was a powerful argument for our learning to think and talk purely in terms of ‘music’ and ‘musicians’ rather than jazz or classical music or\, indeed\, Brazilian music….” – Glyn Pursglove \n“Freestone has clearly listened widely\, but her musicality and broad experiences have stirred all that input into an imposingly original sound” – John Fordham\, The Guardian 4 * review \nHuw Warren – Piano\nTori Freestone – Flute\nYuri Goloubev – Bass\nAdriano Adewale – Percussion \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

Their dynamic music is performed with great energy and expression\, drawing comparisons to a mix between Brian Blade’s Fellowship and Radiohead. \nThe band recently recorded a debut album ‘The Island’ complete with a string quartet\, featuring guest appearances from SoundCellar favourite Emma Rawicz (Kasper is also a member of the Emma Rawicz Jazz Orchestra)\, Anatole Muster and Immy Churchill (released in June 2024 on Zennez Records\, with a launch at Pizza Express Soho in London). \nWhile rooted in jazz\, KRSIX’s music is heavily influenced by rock\, folk\, and blues music. All the music is written and arranged by Kasper\, who draws inspiration from his observations and experiences after moving to London. Kasper performs alongside a superb band of young players: Max McLeish (trombone)\, Alex Lockheart (guitar – coincidentally playing SoundCellar two weeks before his uncle Mark returns to us!)\, Benji Bown (piano)\, Jonah Evans (drums)\, and Toby Yapp (double bass). \nWe heard the album ‘The Island’ here at SoundCellar and we were instantly hooked\, hence why they are coming here to play for our collective delight!  Come along and hear some of the undoubted future stars of jazz\, right here at The Grasshopper in Poole. \nKasper Rietkerk: Sax\nMax McLeish: Trombone\nAlex Lockheart: Guitar\nBenji Bown: Piano\nToby Yapp: Bass\nJonah Evans: Drums \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:Bringing some of the brightest new ‘stars’ to Poole continues\, when we present KASPER RIETKERK’S KRSIX.  At SoundCellar\, we recognise that the future of contemporary music relies not only on promoting many of today’s A-list jazz musicians\, as we continue to do\, but also on ensuring that the very best of the next generation receive exposure to discerning audiences. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nKRSIX\, an instrumental sextet led by saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk\, has been making waves in the London music scene since their debut in the spring of 2021. \nKasper Rietkerk: Sax\nMax McLeish: Trombone\nAlex Lockheart: Guitar\nBenji Bown: Piano\nToby Yapp: Bass\nJonah Evans: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \n  \nShare this event

SUMMARY:MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:An unquestionable highlight of 2023 was to have MARK LOCKHEART’S DREAMERS make their SoundCellar debut. When Mark offered to return\, we relaxed our normal ‘gap between visits’ rule and jumped at the opportunity! \nTicket link below \nMark is a true ‘legend’ of UK jazz and Dreamers is just oozing with three more top-notch musicians – Elliot Galvin\, Tom Herbert and Dave Smith. \nUrgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies\, they can be heard in their full glory on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’ on Edition Records. \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then\, he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera. \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large jazz ensembles (listen to this year’s album ‘Smiling’)\, large orchestral works (check out 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with recent SoundCellar visitor\, pianist Huw Warren. \nMark’s ensemble Dreamers includes the fantastic combination of Elliot Galvin’s keyboards and electronics\, Tom Herbert’s fabulous bass and the subtle but powerful drums of Dave Smith. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine ****\n \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\, Electronics\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event
