SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - DEE BYRNE'S 'OUTLINES'
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n \nIt’s been nine years since we last saw saxophonist Dee Byrne at SoundCellar with her then quintet Entropi\, so we are delighted to host her again\, this time returning to us with her sextet project ‘Outlines’. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nDee Byrne is a saxophonist\, composer and improviser with an interest in jazz and experimental music. She collaborates with artists from the UK and Europe who occupy the area of contemporary jazz\, avant-garde and free improvisation\, notably European Quintet Ydivide\, Loz Speyer’s Inner Space\, Rebecca Nash’s Redefining Element 78 and UK/Swiss band MoonMot. \nDee released her third album as bandleader in June 2023 (Whirlwind Recordings) with radio play on Jazz FM and BBC Radio 3 amongst others\, Spotify streams totalling 35K\, and chosen as ‘Best Jazz on Bandcamp’ in July 2023. \nOUTLINES features Dee’s original compositions that evolved out of a creative experiment: introducing visual art into her composition practice. Out of this\, short musical sketches emerged that stood alone as artistic statements. These short statements are ‘Outlines’ – a springboard for this dynamic ensemble to go in new\, exciting directions every time. \nThe excellent ‘Outlines’ band features many musicians familiar to SoundCellar audiences\, including Nick Malcolm\, Olie Brice and Rebecca Nash\, who have all led ensembles under their own names for us in the past. \n“Byrne has achieved exactly the right balance between composition and improvisation with her intelligent\, inventive and often complex themes providing the perfect launch pad for her hand-picked group”‘ – Jazz Mann [4.5 stars] \n“’Outlines’ is an album of sharp edges and sudden turns\, of staggered motion and harmonic twists\, and yet Dee Byrne guides it all into a logical flow—a fluid output that makes its disparate parts snap into place” –  Best Jazz on Bandcamp July 2023 \nLine-up \nDee Byrne – alto sax / compositions\nNick Malcolm – trumpet\nTom Ward – clarinets\nRebecca Nash – piano\nOlie Brice – double bass\nAndrew Lisle – drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:NEWS FLASH – debut album ‘Za Górami’ will be released the day before this gig – on 13th September on ECM Records \nWe are extremely excited to be working in partnership with Sandy Hill Arts\, to co-present three of the leading musicians on the UK’s contemporary music scene: ALICE ZAWADZKI\, FRED THOMAS and MISHA MULLOV-ABBADO. This gig will take place in a completely weather-proof marquee\, in the beautiful unique setting of Sandy Hill Arts\, in the shadow of Dorset’s iconic Corfe Castle. \nPhoto by Monika Jakubowska \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThough all three have worked together in other ensembles and occasionally on each other’s individual projects (including previous sold-out appearances by Alice and Misha at SoundCellar)\, this will be a rare opportunity to see them perform live as a trio\, in what will be one of their first outings in support of the release of their debut album\, coming out on the prestigious label ECM Records later this year. \nAlice Zawadzki is an outstanding vocalist\, violinist\, pianist and songwriter and has featured on albums by a whole host of top artists\, as well as releasing two super albums under her own name. Her debut album 2014’s ‘China Lane’ and her follow up 2019’s ‘Within You Is A World Of Spring’ have met with warm critical praise\, with comments such as “a genuine original” The Guardian and “Zawadzki’s larynx is a supple\, expressive\, rousing delight… something of a phenomenon” MOJO Magazine \nShe has received numerous awards and nominations from prestigious bodies such as Jazz FM\, Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition of her immense talents. \nFred Thomas is regarded as one of the UK’s finest musicians\, as well as a sought-after arranger and producer. His repertoire covers everything from UK and European folk\, to jazz and to his critically acclaimed interpretations of the works of J.S. Bach.  He works regularly as Musical Director at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and teaches at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Fred is an ECM artist and has collaborated with a whole host of performers ranging from Brian Eno\, to Shabaka Hutchings\, to Yo-Yo Ma and many others. \nMisha Mullov-Abbado is one of the most in-demand bassists on the jazz circuit. In addition to leading his own ensembles and releasing three albums under his own name\, he also regularly performs alongside his world famous classical violinist mother Viktoria Mullova. Like his two colleagues in this trio\, Misha’s repertoire covers a whole gamut of musical genres\, from popular music\, to jazz\, to his classical compositions for cello and full orchestra. \nAlice Zawadzki: Voice\, Violin\nFred Thomas: Piano\, Drums\nMisha Mullov-Abbado: Bass \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:An unquestionable highlight of 2023 was to have MARK LOCKHEART’S DREAMERS make their SoundCellar debut. When Mark offered to return\, we relaxed our normal ‘gap between visits’ rule and jumped at the opportunity! \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nMark is a true ‘legend’ of UK jazz and Dreamers is just oozing with three more top-notch musicians – Elliot Galvin\, Tom Herbert and Dave Smith. \nUrgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies\, they can be heard in their full glory on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’ on Edition Records. \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then\, he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera. \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large jazz ensembles (listen to this year’s album ‘Smiling’)\, large orchestral works (check out 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with recent SoundCellar visitor\, pianist Huw Warren. \nMark’s ensemble Dreamers includes the fantastic combination of Elliot Galvin’s keyboards and electronics\, Tom Herbert’s fabulous bass and the subtle but powerful drums of Dave Smith. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine ****\n \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\, Electronics\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

So much so\, that his considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend\, Jeff Beck\, who made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group — carrying him on two world tours during the course of the last several years. \nNicolas originally hails from Switzerland; born in 1973\, to parents who are great lovers of the arts. Most recently\, Nicolas has completed and released two new albums on MGP (Meier Group Productions): the already-well-received album new duo album with Pete Oxley\, “The Alluring Ascent\,” and; the 2019 released Nicolas Meier World Group’s pristine effort\, “Peaceful” was supported with a 50-dates tour. 2020 saw the release of the  World Group “Live” album recorded at Colchester Arts Centre\, the Meier Budjana Group album “Flying Spirits” featuring Jimmy Haslip and the Solo Guitar Album “Stories” and metal album “Escapades” from Nicolas’ My Dark Side!  \nBy 2022 a new World Group studio album called “Magnificent” came out. Drawing from a love of Turkish\, Eastern & Middle Eastern music\, Flamenco\, Tango and more — all mixed with jazz — we are delighted to welcome Nicolas back with his guitar\, violin\, piano\, percussion ensemble.\n \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nUK-based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the world’s most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Never short on ambition\, Meier founded his own record label\, MGP Records\, in 2009. To date\, he’s produced twelve albums: as a solo artist; in various group formats (The Nicolas Meier Group; Nicolas Meier Trio; Eclectica!; Nicolas Meier World Group); with his heavy metal band\, Seven7\, and; in a duo format\, with long-time partner\, fellow guitarist and collaborator\, the fabulous UK master\, Pete Oxley. \n2017 was a breakthrough year: one in which Steve Vai’s Favored Nations Records released Nicolas’ brilliant solo album\, “Infinity.” The album was recorded in LA and performed in a trio format — featuring fellow virtuosic veterans\, Jimmy Haslip\, on bass\, and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. A 3 CD package including “Live” and “Stories”. To promote this release there have been lots of UK concerts plus an 11 date European tour opening for rock guitar icon Steve Vai!\n \nNicolas Meier: Fretless/fretted guitars and Glissentar\nRichard Jones: Violin\nAlex Hutton: Piano\nDemi Garcia: Percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LAURA JURD & THE DORSET YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW ‘SOLD OUT’\n \n  \nPLEASE NOTE 7pm start \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nComposer-performer Laura Jurd’s unique voice as an improvising trumpet player is at the heart of everything she creates. Her music celebrates and innovates the rich traditions of jazz and folk music\, digging into something primal and earthy\, whilst taking twists and turns that prove Laura to be one of the UK’s most distinctive composer-performers in contemporary music. \nAs a composer she has collaborated with the London Sinfonietta\, the Festival of New Trumpet Music\, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Ligeti Quartet to name a few. She has performed throughout the UK\, Europe and beyond with Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur and under-her own name\, having played the likes of North Sea\, Montréal and Molde International Jazz festivals to name a few. \n“Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrolment in any kind of scene\, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz\, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East\, and the harmonic language of Stravinsky – yet her work is always spiritedly accessible\, and often suggests wordless songs” – John Fordham\, The Guardian. \nEntry is £10 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £12 on the door (cash or card). \nShare this event

SUMMARY:JAKUB KLIMIUK QUINTET feat MARK LOCKHEART
DESCRIPTION:To kick 2025 off perfectly here at SoundCellar\, we have a brilliant young ensemble: the Jakub Klimiuk Quintet\, with very special guest Mark Lockheart. \n \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nJakub Klimiuk Quintet is a London-based ensemble that fuses influences from the Scandinavian improvised scene and contemporary New York jazz\, creating a sound full of exciting tension. The resultant repertoire is a combination of scripted forms and improvised sections\, constantly entwining melodic compositions and experimental sonic escapades. \nThe band’s recent album ”(un)balanced”\, featuring saxophonist Mark Lockheart\, tells the story of seeking balance in today’s reality\, manoeuvring through the overwhelming deluge of information and striving to discover inspiration in everyday routine. We are very excited that SoundCellar favourite Mark will be appearing with Jakub and the band at The Grasshopper. \nThe quintet has performed at major UK jazz venues\, including Vortex Jazz Club\, Pizza Express Live\, 606 Club\, receiving favourable reviews from European press outlets such as UK Jazz News and Jazz Forum. \n“Jakub’s original compositions\, his own playing and that of this fabulous band were also appropriately full of optimism and the promise of good days to come. Nights like this reassure us that the future of jazz is in safe hands.” – UK Jazz News \nJakub Klimiuk is a Polish jazz guitarist and composer based in London. Throughout the years\, he has recorded and shared the stage with the likes of Jonas Kullhammar\, John Horler\, Dave O’Higgins\, Krystyna Stańko and of course Mark Lockheart\, working with both UK-based and international projects.  Jakub first made his mark on the British jazz scene at the EFG London Jazz Festival with his original project.  He is an adventurous composer\, focused on experimenting with musical forms and implementing compositional techniques derived from contemporary classical music into jazz. His original compositions are a unique combination of arranged structures\, often based on counterpoints\, and fully improvised sections. He mentions the current New York scene (Mark Turner\, Jonathan Kreisberg\, Aaron Parks) and Scandinavian musicians like Petter Eldh and Jakob Bro\, as his main influences. \nMark Lockheart needs little introduction to SoundCellar audiences\, having played two fabulous gigs here with his quartet ‘Dreamers’\, the most recent of which was in October 2024.  Mark is undoubtedly one of the foremost saxophonists in the UK\, having been a member of such iconic bands as Loose Tubes\, Perfect Houseplants\, Polar Bear\, The Printmakers and others\, as well having a major body of his own work. \nLine-up:\nJakub Klimiuk – Guitar\nMark Lockheart – Tenor & Soprano Saxophone\nSimeon May – Tenor Saxophone\, Bass Clarinet\nCody Moss – Piano\nKinzan – Double bass\nAdam Merrell – Drums \nEntry is £17.50 (no booking fee) in advance through the below link\, or £20 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event
