Having performed across Europe with Matthew Herbert\, worked as a guest conductor and arranger for the Grammy-award-winning Metropole Orkest\, and been invited to collaborate on projects in Belgium\, Netherlands\, Ireland\, and the UK\, Meadows is taking his original music on the road for the first-time post-pandemic and would love the opportunity to play for you! The regular line-up showcases four musicians from across the UK\, who met through London’s creative Southeast London jazz scene: Phil Meadows on sax and electronics\, Michael De Souza on guitar\, Joe Downard on electric bass and Jay Davis on drums. The music combines soaring melodies\, atmospheric soundscapes\, and head-nodding grooves; inspired by the sounds of Bill Frisell\, Donny McCaslin\, GoGo Penguin and Bill Laurance. \n‘A great stage presence and an unforgettable instrumental style.”Meadows has a formidable reputation as an innovative composer’ – JAZZWISE MAGAZINE \n‘Inventive and expressive’ – THE GUARDIAN \n‘The versatile and likeable Meadows is one of the most promising emerging jazz talents that we have’ – THE JAZZ MANN \nPhil Meadows: sax/electronics\nMichael De Souza: guitar\nJoe Downard: bass\nJay Davis: drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - HUW WARREN: CHORO CHORO CHORO
DESCRIPTION:“Music for the head\, heart and feet!” – Huw Warren makes his SoundCellar debut by bringing us his latest project Choro Choro Choro\, featuring a star quartet of musicians. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nCelebrating Choro\, the vibrant beating heart of Brazilian music\, Choro Choro Choro explores music from the 1880s to the present day by composers such as Ernesto Nazareth\, Chiquinha Gonzaga\, Pixinguinha\, and modern masters such as Guinga and Hermeto Pascoal\, as well as newly commissioned pieces by Huw Warren himself. By turns virtuoso\, lyrical\, and naively sentimental – Choro Choro Choro brings new twists on this great dance music and is guaranteed to leave you smiling! \nHuw Warren has created several previous projects around the music of Brazil\, including collaborations with Jovino Santos Neto; a critically acclaimed recording of Hermeto’s music (‘Hermeto+’) in 2009; a trio record for CAM Jazz ‘Everything in Between’ in 2019 and ‘Core Coracao’ from 2017 with Maria Pia de Vito\, Gabriele Mirabassi\, Roberto Taufic\, and the legendary Chico Buarque. \n Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has achieved an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making\, over a thirty year career. Equally at home crossing the often exclusive worlds of Jazz\, World and Contemporary music; he has a distinctive and personal voice\, and has collaborated with a huge variety of artists worldwide \nHuw has recorded 2 albums for ECM (as Quercus with June Tabor and SoundCellar favourite Iain Ballamy) and in 2018 released a solo piano recording Nocturnes and Visions. In 2019 he released 2 albums for Italian label CAM Jazz Everything in Between (with Dudley Phillips and Zoot Warren) and New Day (with another firm SoundCellar favourite Mark Lockheart). His previous albums and projects have included themes and source material as diverse as John Dowland\, Plainchant and Hermeto Pascoal. In 2024\, as well as releasing his solo piano recording ‘Choro Choro Choro’\, Huw has also released ‘Calennig’ an album of Plygain arrangements with singer Angharad Jenkins. \nHis appearance with the famed Perfect Houseplants (alongside Mark Lockheart\, Dudley Phillips & Martin France) at last year’s Swanage Jazz Festival was the stuff of legends. He has also performed and collaborated with luminaries such as Mark Feldman\, Peter Herbert\, Joanna Macgregor\, Iain Ballamy\, Kenny Wheeler\, Jim Black\, Theo Bleckmann\, Neil Yates\, Pamela Thorby\, Mose Se Fan Fan\, Mat Maneri and Thomas Strønen. \nIn addition to receiving many awards and writing for a whole range of orchestral and jazz ensembles\, Huw is currently a jazz lecturer/tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) and is also head of Jazz Ensembles at Cardiff University. \nChoro Choro Choro features an international line up including a welcome return to SoundCellar of Anglo/Spanish flautist Tori Freestone and Russian bassist Yuri Goloubev\, together with a SoundCellar debut by Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale. Tori has played at SoundCellar on a number of occasions and was last seen here in the very first gig held at The Grasshopper in May 2022 (in Andre Canniere’s sextet). \n“Finally\, a special word for Huw Warren’s solo interpretation of Hermeto’s Mente Clara (clear mind)\, whose emotive\, sustained and lush harmonies\, combined with pellucid runs\, are delivered so affectingly. Words\, on this occasion\, cannot do it justice” – London Jazz News \n“Apart from the joyful pleasure it created in abundance\, this concert was a powerful argument for our learning to think and talk purely in terms of ‘music’ and ‘musicians’ rather than jazz or classical music or\, indeed\, Brazilian music….” – Glyn Pursglove \n“Freestone has clearly listened widely\, but her musicality and broad experiences have stirred all that input into an imposingly original sound” – John Fordham\, The Guardian 4 * review \nHuw Warren – Piano\nTori Freestone – Flute\nYuri Goloubev – Bass\nAdriano Adewale – Percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
