DESCRIPTION:Bringing some of the brightest new ‘stars’ to Poole continues\, when we present KASPER RIETKERK’S KRSIX.  At SoundCellar\, we recognise that the future of contemporary music relies not only on promoting many of today’s A-list jazz musicians\, as we continue to do\, but also on ensuring that the very best of the next generation receive exposure to discerning audiences. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nKRSIX\, an instrumental sextet led by saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk\, has been making waves in the London music scene since their debut in the spring of 2021. All the music is written and arranged by Kasper\, who draws inspiration from his observations and experiences after moving to London. Kasper performs alongside a superb band of young players: Max McLeish (trombone)\, Alex Lockheart (guitar – coincidentally playing SoundCellar two weeks before his uncle Mark returns to us!)\, Benji Bown (piano)\, Jonah Evans (drums)\, and Toby Yapp (double bass). \nWe heard the album ‘The Island’ here at SoundCellar and we were instantly hooked\, hence why they are coming here to play for our collective delight!  Come along and hear some of the undoubted future stars of jazz\, right here at The Grasshopper in Poole. \nKasper Rietkerk: Sax\nMax McLeish: Trombone\nAlex Lockheart: Guitar\nBenji Bown: Piano\nToby Yapp: Bass\nJonah Evans: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \n  \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:An unquestionable highlight of 2023 was to have MARK LOCKHEART’S DREAMERS make their SoundCellar debut. When Mark offered to return\, we relaxed our normal ‘gap between visits’ rule and jumped at the opportunity! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nMark is a true ‘legend’ of UK jazz and Dreamers is just oozing with three more top-notch musicians – Elliot Galvin\, Tom Herbert and Dave Smith. \nUrgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies\, they can be heard in their full glory on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’ on Edition Records. \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then\, he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera. \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large jazz ensembles (listen to this year’s album ‘Smiling’)\, large orchestral works (check out 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with recent SoundCellar visitor\, pianist Huw Warren. \nMark’s ensemble Dreamers includes the fantastic combination of Elliot Galvin’s keyboards and electronics\, Tom Herbert’s fabulous bass and the subtle but powerful drums of Dave Smith. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine ****\n \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\, Electronics\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - ROB LUFT QUARTET 'DAHAB DAYS'
DESCRIPTION:Regular SoundCellar patrons will undoubtedly be delighted\, as are we\, that we are presenting the ROB LUFT QUARTET ‘DAHAB DAYS’ \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nRob has graced the SoundCellar stage in recent years with three different scintillating ensembles: (i) with Alice Zawadzki’s trio\, (ii) in a guitar duo with Mike Outram and band\, and (iii) in last year’s wonderful gig by Ellen Andrea Wang’s Closeness. We thought it was time we gave Rob centre stage with his own band\, in order to hear live performances of some of the fabulous music from his own repertoire. \nRob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ (eg as a BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now!  He has released three critically acclaimed albums on Edition Records under his own name: 2017’s debut ‘Riser’ sold out of CDs long ago\, 2020’s follow up ‘Life Is The Dancer’ \n“Life Is The Dancer is balm for the soul” – Chris May\, All About Jazz \nand Rob’s most recent release 2023’s ‘Dahab Days’\, which has rightly been lauded as a major piece of work \n“…a celebration of the serenity and vitality of nature\, shot through with flavours from the Middle East\, Africa and beyond” – Neil Spencer\, **** The Guardian \n“Rob Luft’s writing and playing just seems to get better and better…” – Mike Gates\, UK Vibe \nRob’s talents are also becoming known beyond the realms of ‘jazz’\, with the world premiere of his orchestral guitar concerto ‘From Silence\, Music Is Born’ at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall last November (witnessed by two of the SoundCellar team and broadcast on BBC R3). \nIn addition\, Rob has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label)\, as a member of the band Big Bad Wolf and most recently appearing live with legendary musician John Surman and on John’s 2024 ECM release ‘Words Unspoken’. \nRob’s quartet for this gig unsurprisingly consists of some of the UK’s finest players\, with in-demand bassist Will Sach and the welcome returns to SoundCellar of saxophonist Joe Wright and drummer Jay Davis \nRob Luft: Guitar\nJoe Wright: Sax\nWill Sach: Bass\nJay Davis: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - JAKUB KLIMIUK QUINTET feat MARK LOCKHEART
DESCRIPTION:To kick 2025 off perfectly here at SoundCellar\, we have a brilliant young ensemble: the Jakub Klimiuk Quintet\, with very special guest Mark Lockheart. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nJakub Klimiuk Quintet is a London-based ensemble that fuses influences from the Scandinavian improvised scene and contemporary New York jazz\, creating a sound full of exciting tension. The resultant repertoire is a combination of scripted forms and improvised sections\, constantly entwining melodic compositions and experimental sonic escapades. \nThe band’s recent album ”(un)balanced”\, featuring saxophonist Mark Lockheart\, tells the story of seeking balance in today’s reality\, manoeuvring through the overwhelming deluge of information and striving to discover inspiration in everyday routine. We are very excited that SoundCellar favourite Mark will be appearing with Jakub and the band at The Grasshopper. \nThe quintet has performed at major UK jazz venues\, including Vortex Jazz Club\, Pizza Express Live\, 606 Club\, receiving favourable reviews from European press outlets such as UK Jazz News and Jazz Forum. \n“Jakub’s original compositions\, his own playing and that of this fabulous band were also appropriately full of optimism and the promise of good days to come. Nights like this reassure us that the future of jazz is in safe hands.” – UK Jazz News \nJakub Klimiuk is a Polish jazz guitarist and composer based in London. Throughout the years\, he has recorded and shared the stage with the likes of Jonas Kullhammar\, John Horler\, Dave O’Higgins\, Krystyna Stańko and of course Mark Lockheart\, working with both UK-based and international projects.  Jakub first made his mark on the British jazz scene at the EFG London Jazz Festival with his original project.  He is an adventurous composer\, focused on experimenting with musical forms and implementing compositional techniques derived from contemporary classical music into jazz. His original compositions are a unique combination of arranged structures\, often based on counterpoints\, and fully improvised sections. He mentions the current New York scene (Mark Turner\, Jonathan Kreisberg\, Aaron Parks) and Scandinavian musicians like Petter Eldh and Jakob Bro\, as his main influences. \nMark Lockheart needs little introduction to SoundCellar audiences\, having played two fabulous gigs here with his quartet ‘Dreamers’\, the most recent of which was in October 2024.  Mark is undoubtedly one of the foremost saxophonists in the UK\, having been a member of such iconic bands as Loose Tubes\, Perfect Houseplants\, Polar Bear\, The Printmakers and others\, as well having a major body of his own work. \nLine-up:\nJakub Klimiuk – Guitar\nMark Lockheart – Tenor & Soprano Saxophone\nSimeon May – Tenor Saxophone\, Bass Clarinet\nCody Moss – Piano\nKinzan – Double bass\nAdam Merrell – Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - FINI BEARMAN
DESCRIPTION:Fini Bearman is a London-based singer\, songwriter\, composer\, and multi-instrumentalist. Her music melds diverse influences from jazz\, folk\, and contemporary songs into an “arresting and uniquely personal” sound. Fini makes her SoundCellar debut with her quartet to promote her latest release Last Night of The World. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nTouring her 5th studio album\, Last Night of the World (Pastiche Records)\, Fini is joined by Conor Chaplin (bass)\, Chris Higginbottom (drums) & Tom Cawley (keyboards) for a special night showcasing this new music. \nAn eclectic collection of jazz\, folk & pop-infused songs\, Last Night of the World draws on Fini’s experiences of motherhood & new beginnings\, of love & loss\, sometimes of a new-found sense of meaning\, sometimes an existential lack thereof! \nThe record was conceived using writing exercises created for her work teaching songwriting\, and these seeds grew over time\, coming to fruition in tandem with her pregnancy; final vocal and instrumental takes often taking place with Bridget asleep in a sling… Inspiration for the songs is drawn from a diverse spectrum of influences: the melodic inventiveness of Madison Cunningham\, the esoteric jazz/folk realms of Becca Stevens\, Chris Thile\, Paul Simon and the electronic\, minimalist songwriting voice of Bjork. \nThis album marks a departure from Fini’s last LP (the solo record La Loba\, 2020) and acts as a return to her true ‘musical north’- a jazz-meets-indie-pop rhythm section playing lyric-based songs\, with nuanced and at times complex harmonic structures and rhythmic idiosyncrasies. Each song is individual and unique in its own right\, with space for improvisation\, interaction and connection. \nFini Bearman: Vocals\nTom Cawley: Keyboards\nConor Chaplin: Bass\nChris Higginbottom: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - LEVY/ROBSON INTERNATIONAL QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Formed in NYC in 2017\, US saxophonist JED LEVY and British guitarist PHIL ROBSON bring their international quartet to SoundCellar\, featuring Italian drummer ROBERTO GATTO and British bassist MARK HODGSON. Their innovative\, melodic jazz blends tradition with contemporary grooves\, captivating audiences at iconic venues worldwide. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThis musical partnership was formed in New York City in 2017 between the highly acclaimed US saxophonist JED LEVY (Jaki Byard\, Jack McDu/\, Mike Clark\, Tom Harrell etc) and multi-award-winning UK born guitarist PHIL ROBSON (Mark Turner\, David Liebman\, Billy Hart\, Partisans\, etc)\, who was living in NYC at the time. The American quartet featuring Peter Slavov and Clarence Penn quickly began to become a regular feature in the city’s iconic venues such as Smalls\, Birdland\, 55 Bar etc\, as well as touring in the UK\, Germany\, Spain\, Ireland\, Northern California and more. Robson relocated to Ireland in 2020\, but since that time the collaboration has continued with various European incarnations of the band. \nThe current line-up features one of Europe’s most celebrated drummers\, from Rome\, ROBERTO GATTO (Freddie Hubbard\, John Scofield\, Joe Zawinul\, Michael Brecker\, etc) and the incredible UK bassist MARK HODGSON (Randy Brecker\, Cedar Walton\, Eddie Henderson\, Greg Osby\, etc) who is one of the most in demand bassists on the contemporary jazz scene today. \nThe quartet plays original music penned by both Levy and Robson. The music is innovative and contemporary whilst remaining highly melodic and groovy\, with a strong sense of tradition mixed in with the diverse characteristics of each composer. \n“This was high-powered jazz\, not by dint of frenetic pace\, volume or assertiveness but by the beauty and coherence of the quartet sound that was at once polished but fresh and lively. That’s a difficult poise to strike\, even for musicians as able as these\, yet for all that they were fully engaged\, each seemed entirely in his element.” The Whitman Review of Wakefield Jazz Concert \n“Added to the warmth of his sound and excellent command of the instrument\, Levy is an impressive package deserving wider international recognition. Phil Robson is already gaining wider international recognition\, as witnessed by the admiring comments on his playing from Peter Bernstein and Wayne Krantz to be found on his website. His great fluidity and fleet inventiveness were\, as ever\, balm for the ears.” London Jazz News \nJed Levy: Sax\nPhil Robson: Guitar\nMark Hodgson: Bass\nRoberto Gatto: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
