SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - HUW WARREN: CHORO CHORO CHORO
DESCRIPTION:“Music for the head\, heart and feet!” – Huw Warren makes his SoundCellar debut by bringing us his latest project Choro Choro Choro\, featuring a star quartet of musicians. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nCelebrating Choro\, the vibrant beating heart of Brazilian music\, Choro Choro Choro explores music from the 1880s to the present day by composers such as Ernesto Nazareth\, Chiquinha Gonzaga\, Pixinguinha\, and modern masters such as Guinga and Hermeto Pascoal\, as well as newly commissioned pieces by Huw Warren himself. By turns virtuoso\, lyrical\, and naively sentimental – Choro Choro Choro brings new twists on this great dance music and is guaranteed to leave you smiling! \nHuw Warren has created several previous projects around the music of Brazil\, including collaborations with Jovino Santos Neto; a critically acclaimed recording of Hermeto’s music (‘Hermeto+’) in 2009; a trio record for CAM Jazz ‘Everything in Between’ in 2019 and ‘Core Coracao’ from 2017 with Maria Pia de Vito\, Gabriele Mirabassi\, Roberto Taufic\, and the legendary Chico Buarque. \n Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has achieved an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making\, over a thirty year career. Equally at home crossing the often exclusive worlds of Jazz\, World and Contemporary music; he has a distinctive and personal voice\, and has collaborated with a huge variety of artists worldwide \nHuw has recorded 2 albums for ECM (as Quercus with June Tabor and SoundCellar favourite Iain Ballamy) and in 2018 released a solo piano recording Nocturnes and Visions. In 2019 he released 2 albums for Italian label CAM Jazz Everything in Between (with Dudley Phillips and Zoot Warren) and New Day (with another firm SoundCellar favourite Mark Lockheart). His previous albums and projects have included themes and source material as diverse as John Dowland\, Plainchant and Hermeto Pascoal. In 2024\, as well as releasing his solo piano recording ‘Choro Choro Choro’\, Huw has also released ‘Calennig’ an album of Plygain arrangements with singer Angharad Jenkins. \nHis appearance with the famed Perfect Houseplants (alongside Mark Lockheart\, Dudley Phillips & Martin France) at last year’s Swanage Jazz Festival was the stuff of legends. He has also performed and collaborated with luminaries such as Mark Feldman\, Peter Herbert\, Joanna Macgregor\, Iain Ballamy\, Kenny Wheeler\, Jim Black\, Theo Bleckmann\, Neil Yates\, Pamela Thorby\, Mose Se Fan Fan\, Mat Maneri and Thomas Strønen. \nIn addition to receiving many awards and writing for a whole range of orchestral and jazz ensembles\, Huw is currently a jazz lecturer/tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) and is also head of Jazz Ensembles at Cardiff University. \nChoro Choro Choro features an international line up including a welcome return to SoundCellar of Anglo/Spanish flautist Tori Freestone and Russian bassist Yuri Goloubev\, together with a SoundCellar debut by Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale. Tori has played at SoundCellar on a number of occasions and was last seen here in the very first gig held at The Grasshopper in May 2022 (in Andre Canniere’s sextet). \n“Finally\, a special word for Huw Warren’s solo interpretation of Hermeto’s Mente Clara (clear mind)\, whose emotive\, sustained and lush harmonies\, combined with pellucid runs\, are delivered so affectingly. Words\, on this occasion\, cannot do it justice” – London Jazz News \n“Apart from the joyful pleasure it created in abundance\, this concert was a powerful argument for our learning to think and talk purely in terms of ‘music’ and ‘musicians’ rather than jazz or classical music or\, indeed\, Brazilian music….” – Glyn Pursglove \n“Freestone has clearly listened widely\, but her musicality and broad experiences have stirred all that input into an imposingly original sound” – John Fordham\, The Guardian 4 * review \nHuw Warren – Piano\nTori Freestone – Flute\nYuri Goloubev – Bass\nAdriano Adewale – Percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - aramii (MARIA CHIARA ARGIRÒ & JAMIE LEEMING)
DESCRIPTION:STOP PRESS! \nThis SoundCellar gig will be the world live debut of aramii \nWe are extremely pleased to be able to add this additional gig to our regular schedule here at SoundCellar\, when we present two of the most in-demand musicians from the vibrant and exciting London contemporary scene. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig. \n\naramii is the new moniker for the long-time collaborative project between prolific artists Maria Chiara Argirò (Rosie Turton; Kinkajous; These New Puritans) and Jamie Leeming (Alfa Mist; Jas Kayser; Rebecca Nash).  Having lost the opportunity to have them play at SoundCellar when the world ‘stopped’ in 2020\, we are absolutely delighted that we will at last be able to present Maria Chiara and Jamie. \nSince moving from her native Italy to London\, Maria Chiara Argirò has become a highly sought after musician in the capital\, playing and recording with a number of leading ensembles\, as well as releasing a series of fine albums under her own name. From beautifully crafted acoustic piano-centred albums “The Fall Dance” (2016) and “Hidden Seas” (2019)\, to her most recent release “Forest City” (2022)\, with its delicious infusion of electronic sounds\, Maria Chiara’s reputation is rapidly growing as both player and composer. \nJamie Leeming is fast becoming one of the UK’s most in demand ‘go to’ musicians\, appearing on recent top releases by drummer sensation Jas Kayser\, by SoundCellar favourite Rebecca Nash and in his regular guitarist role in Alfa Mist’s outstanding band\, appearing on all four of his albums.  Jamie also released his own excellent album ‘Resynthesis’ on Alfa’s label Sekito Records in 2022. \nThe latest EP by this collaboration\, “Dusk” (Cavalo Records)\, combines Argirò’s and Leeming’s signature blend of lo-fi\, electronica and cinematic jazz with vocals\, presenting a fresh and unique take on the singer/songwriter and spoken word genres. \nHaving worked together for many years\, including releasing the superb download-only album “Flow” in 2020 (Guardian Jazz Album of the month)\, Leeming says “we felt that aramii would be the perfect vehicle for the next chapter of our work together”. \nThe EP centres around the outstanding track “Dusk” (feat. Jono McCleery)\, with layers of moody piano\, shimmering guitars and dark synths creating an intimate sound world\, framing the deeply emotive vocal.  Argirò says “To me aramii is a perfect platform to explore and collaborate through intimate\, cinematic\, soul-influenced songs”. \nJoin us here at SoundCellar for this rare opportunity to catch the duo live\, during a small gap in their busy respective touring and recording schedules! \nMaria Chiara Argirò: Keyboards\, Electronics\nJamie Leeming: Guitar \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one week only. \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:Bringing their new joint project Sarsen Drift to SoundCellar\, we are really excited to have the return of Rebecca Nash on keyboards\, alongside a debut appearance by Nick Walters on trumpet and electronics. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nWe were fortunate to feature Rebecca (Entropi; Sara Colman; Steve Banks; Iain Ballamy) and Nick (Ruby Rushton; Yussef Dayes; Florence & the Machine; Beats & Pieces Big Band) in one of our most memorable livestreams from a Birmingham studio during lockdown\, so we are particularly delighted to now present them ‘in-person’! \nThe pair have worked closely together for a number of years\, regularly appearing on each other’s albums and in different live configurations. They always had a plan to combine musical forces\, having individually notched up several acclaimed releases on major labels including Whirlwind Recordings\, 22a Records\, EFPI Records and D.O.T. over the last twelve years. \nThis new venture\, firmly rooted in their mutual appreciation of electronica and jazz\, began when they were asked by Jazz South in 2020 to produce a Radar Commission. Echoes of influences such as bands like Royksopp\, Aphex Twin\, and Lemon Jelly can be heard in the mix of their sound\, along with live improvisation. \nThe duo chose to explore the concept of ley-lines and their effect on the natural world\, incorporating musical samples taken from Avebury Stone Henge and its surrounding areas. Rebecca and Nick have since steadily continued to compose in the same trajectory\, writing material to incorporate live electronics and samples on stage\, alongside acoustic instruments. Their debut album The Sanctuary will be released on D.O.T. Records in 2024. \nRebecca and Nick will be joined for this Sarsen Drift performance by Nim Sadot on bass guitar and Andrew Lisle on drums. \n‘There’s a beauty to this recording that goes beyond any pigeon-holes of musical styles’\n‘A vibrant and invigorating landscape of sound’\nUK VIBE ★★★★★ 5/5 \n‘At the vanguard of innovative and compelling new music’\nDOWNBEAT MAGAZINE \n‘Amazing new album\, so good – another chapter to add to the phenomenal new British Jazz scene’\nGILLES PETERSON \nRebecca Nash: Keyboards\nNick Walters: Trumpet\, Electronics\nNim Sadot: Bass\nAndrew Lisle: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

As a sideman he was a founder member of Eliza Carthy’s ‘Wayward Daughter’ as well as of vocalist Emily Wright’s ‘Moonlight Saving Time’. \nHe has also performed works by contemporary classical composers Ianncu Dumitrescu and Richard Barrett\, directed by the composers and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.\nHe has worked alongside major artists such as Lauren Kinsella\, Corey Mwamba\, Paul Dunmall\, Mark Sanders\, Iain Ballamy\, Alex Merritt\, Sara Colman\, Jason Rebello\, Tom Hewsom\, George Crowley\, Shabaka Hutchings and many others. \nNick has studied with world renowned trumpeters Ambrose Akinmusire\, Chris Batchelor and Ralph Alessi and teaches jazz trumpet privately and at Wells Cathedral School. \n“…a supremely gifted musician…a trumpet player for the 21st century…wow!” (Bebop Spoken Here)\n\nThe all-star line up that forms Out Front alongside Nick\, includes Jason Yarde\, Jake McMurchie\, Olie Brice and Dave Smith. All of these fantastic musicians have graced the SoundCellar stage with different ensembles in the past\, so we are really looking forward to hearing them perform together for us. \nNick Malcolm: Trumpet\nJason Yarde: Alto Saxophone\nJake McMurchie: Tenor Saxophone\nOlie Brice: Double Bass\nDave Smith: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: CORRIE DICK 'SUN SWELLS'
DESCRIPTION:Having played at SoundCellar last year as drummer with the Outram/Luft Quartet\, we were keen to have CORRIE DICK back to lead his own ensemble for us for the first time since 2016. This time he brings with him some of the best musicians playing in the UK today\, not least undoubted SoundCellar favourites Laura Jurd on trumpet and Rob Luft on guitar\, together with vocalist Rebecka Edlund and bassist Caius Williams. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nAs has been articulated elsewhere\, Corrie has established himself at the “…rhythmic epicentre of a new era of innovative British jazz”. His first album under his own name 2015’s ‘Impossible Things’ remains one of those albums that captures and highlights the outstanding quality of a whole generation of musicians that have emerged from the UK touring scene over the last decade or so. \nHe has built this reputation in collaborations with such luminaries as Mark Lockheart\, Jake Long and Jasper Hoiby\, as well as by being a crucial member of such innovative bands as the Rob Luft Group\, the Elliot Galvin Trio\, of Laura Jurd’s numerous ensembles including the Mercury Music Prize shortlisted Dinosaur and of elusive and alternative bands Ink Line and I Don’t Need Light\, Please Give Me Water. \nCorrie’s latest album ‘Sun Swells’ was released (on Ubuntu Music) last year and it has taken another step forward with its mix of Scottish\, Scandinavian\, African and English jazz and folk influences\, together with electronic and rock overtones. To quote Corrie himself: “I wanted to write a jazz album that had rock instrumentation at its core: guitar-bass-drums. Rob Luft (guitar)\, Tom McCredie (bass) and I have been improvising and writing together for years and years and we’ve forged a sound that is uniquely crunchy yet summery\, so I wanted that sound at the centre but decorated with all sorts of elements. I basically wanted to make folk-rock-jazz but treat it how electronic music producer Mura Masa treats his tracks–chucking the whole damn fruit bowl at the thing but somehow keeping space and air in the arrangement and the mix.” \nFor their SoundCellar performance\, Corrie is bringing a great group of musicians and we are really looking forward to the evening. \n“The trumpeter [Laura Jurd] herself and expressive drummer Corrie Dick are both sensations who have made big names for themselves straight out of the blocks. Compared to other genres\, jazz doesn’t really thrive on hype. Their secret is just that they’re really\, really good.” (London Jazz News) \n“Corrie Dick is one of the most gifted drummers I’ve come across in recent years; he’s well on his way to being a visionary both as a musician and composer. With such vibrance and flair there is no doubt in my mind that he will soon assert himself as one of the finest contemporary percussionists on the UK scene.” (NY saxophonist and SoundCellar alumni\, Will Vinson) \nCorrie Dick: Drums\, Percussion\nRebecka Edlund: Voice\nLaura Jurd: Trumpet\nRob Luft: Guitar\nCaius Williams: Bass \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: EUROPA STRING CHOIR
DESCRIPTION:Europa String Choir last performed at SoundCellar way back in 2010 (and again in 2020 via a livestream) so we are delighted to welcome them to The Grasshopper. The core duo of Cathy Stevens (Violectra) and Udo Dzierzanowski (Guitar) return with original trio member Alessandro Bruno (Guitar) for an evening of sonic beauty. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nEuropa String Choir first formed as a trio in the summer of 1993\, while rehearsing and performing in Rome\, Italy and became a quartet a few years later. ESC’s mostly self-written\, all instrumental music ranges from intricate and touching to strident and rocking\, while always aware that silence is at its core. \nHaving worked mostly as duo between 2001 and 2013 (in which year Udo and Cathy moved to Germany for family reasons)\, a series of post-pandemic performances – one particularly enjoyable online appearance at SoundCellar in July 2020 – saw the ESC return to active service once more\, first as a duo\, then again as a trio. \nThe ESC is celebrating its 30th anniversary with various projects\, including short bursts of touring\, video-at-a-distance\, in-person meetings\, online posts of current live recordings\, Guitar Craft/Guitar Circle-related projects and the writing of new material. In addition their very first duo album\, featuring a couple of special guests\, is now in its final production stages and will be released soon. \nCathy Stevens – Violectra\nUdo Dzierzanowski – Guitar\nAlessandro Bruno – Guitar \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: PETER URPETH with Jon Lloyd\, Al Swainger and Rob Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Writer and pianist Peter Urpeth will be joined by saxophonist Jon Lloyd\, bassist and sonic manipulator Al Swainger and guitarist Rob Palmer for an evening of poetry and ambient jazz. Peter will be performing his poetry from “The 4000 Nights of New York in 1988”\, his latest anthology.\n \nLivestream Ticket link below \nPeter Urpeth is a writer\, journalist\, editor\, writing and creativity mentor\, pianist\, composer and creative business consultant. He has an MA in Multi-media Journalism from Edinburgh Napier University\, and 35 years of experience in journalism. He is a published novelist and poet\, and has been the editor of four local newspapers in Scotland after being a magazine section editor at Time Out\, London during its heyday years as a magazine. He has published one novel\, two collections of poetry and his work has been widely anthologised. His documentary film – Manna – Jazz and Survival in East Harlem – opened at the African World Film Festival\, Detroit in 2019. In a long creative career Peter has also been a TV and radio presenter. \nAs a pianist and composer Peter has worked for more than thirty years  in jazz and free improvisation. He has performed with saxophonist Evan Parker\, bassist Olie Brice\, vocalist Maggie Nicols and many others. He also composes new scores and performs live to classic and rare silent movies. In the last decade he has received seven major commissions for new scores to classic films\, ranging from Nosferatu to The Passion of Joan of Arc and Nanook of The North. \nPeter lives and works from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. \nSaxophonist Jon Lloyd arrived on the UK free jazz scene in the early 1990s and rose to prominence with recordings on Leo records and HatHut\, and with many UK and European concerts with his quartet comprising John Law\, Paul Rogers and Mark Sanders. Highlights during this period included Berlin’s FMP Festival\, several Arts Council tours and the 1993 Contemporary Music Network tour of the UK with the Bill Frisell Band! Over the years Jon has embraced contemporary composition\, abstract improv and American jazz and fusion\, but in the last decade has primarily developed his music towards the European jazz aesthetic\, notably recording “Vanishing Points” in 2013 with Asaf Sirkis\, Tom Farmer\, John Law and Rob Palmer. In 2022 Jon was involved with John Law’s multi-media “Renaissance”\, which toured in cathedrals throughout the UK\, and in 2023 he is busy promoting his European Contemporary Jazz quartet “The Jon Lloyd Quartet”. \nAs a multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer\, Al Swainger is both eclectic and transformative. His use of FX pedals and computer manipulation provide an extensive and original tonal palette with which to sculpt his music. His project Pointless Beauty’s most recent album ‘Hearts Full of Grace’ blends influences from ambient\, Latin\, rock\, pop and electronica with improvised music and presents is a very personal take on what jazz or progressive music could be. \nGuitarist Rob Palmer has worked with saxophonist Theo Travis\, pianist John Law\, vibes player Roger Beaujolais\, USA vocalist Lila Ammons\, violinist Phil Wachsmann\, vocalist Véronique Joly and is a member of the ambient/groove/electronica trio Echo Engine. \nPeter Urpeth – poetry/piano\nJon Lloyd – saxophone\nAl Swainger – bass/electronics\nRob Palmer – guitar/electronics \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: WANG / LUFT / FÄLT TRIO - CLOSENESS
DESCRIPTION:One of our unquestionable highlights of 2023 will be an appearance by the Wang / Luft / Fält Trio presenting their superb album Closeness\, along with some brand new material. Because of his passion for the band and a desire for them to be seen and heard on this side of the North Sea\, SoundCellar‘s John has stepped in and successfully arranged an 8-date tour of England & Wales for the band\, culminating in the final show here in Poole\, before they fly off to perform at a Festival in Sweden! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nBorn and raised in Norway\, bassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaborations with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, to performances at major Jazz Festivals\, to her appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio\, Wang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nEllen Andrea Wang’s third studio album\, Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. In what now seems prescient\, the album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and three selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman)\, Traditional (Wayfaring Stranger) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike. The Guardian \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ (eg as a BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now\, as we saw on two different occasions in 2022 at SoundCellar! In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in Oct 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release on ECM in 2023. \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. His lightness of touch\, coupled with a strong musical sensibility\, fits perfectly with this thrillingly dynamic ‘international’ trio. \n‘Closeness’ has received much critical acclaim since its release in September 2020\, such as: \nAlbum of the year 2020 – Vårt Land (Norwegian newspaper) \n4/5 stars “She is one of the best contemporary jazz artists” – Dagens Industri (Swedish newspaper) \n**** and ‘Editor’s choice’ for Nov 2020 – Jazzwise (UK magazine) \nHaving played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival and with dates in Germany and Norway coming up in April/May this year\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nEllen Andrea Wang: Bass and Vocals\nRob Luft: Guitar\nJon Fält: Drums and percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA plus support FOXPALMER
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you The Blackheart Orchestra – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nTwo people playing 13 instruments between them\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a unique sound frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Portishead and Kate Bush as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. \nDescribed as an ”Avant garde musical utopia”\, they perform in their ‘musical space station’ of instruments including guitar\, bass\, percussion\, mandola\, piano\, organ\, omnichord and vintage synthesisers. After over 1000 concerts and now 7 albums\, they’ve played everywhere from Southampton to Sydney including London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall while piling up achievements from a nomination for the Progressive Music Limelight Award\, Best British Duo\, #4 Best New British Band\, and #10 Most Important Rock Event of 2020. \nMore recently their universally applauded 2022 album Hotel Utopia went straight into the UK Rock Chart at #13\, single If You Tolerate This made #22 in the iTunes chart and Chrissy Mostyn was voted #5 World Female Vocalist in Prog Magazine’s Readers’ Poll. \n“Epic” – Uncut \n“Ethereal” – Sunday Express \n“A life-enhancing listening experience” – Louder Than War \n“Reaches areas of your head and heart you never knew existed” – Metal Planet Music \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, both SoundCellar’s John and the more recently ‘converted’ Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra. Their SoundCellar gig scheduled in late 2022\, fell foul of an unfortunate injury for one of the band\, but all is now well\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their 2023 UK tour to promote the new album. \nLatest addition: Support act Foxpalmer has been announced for the tour and will open the evening at 7:30pm prompt \nFoxpalmer aka Fern McNulty is a London-based singer-songwriter. She combines the genres of acoustic\, rock and folk to create deep\, tearful and soulful music. Her unique sound\, original music and captivating live shows have won her considerable airplay and performances at a number of UK festivals including Godiva and Celtic Connections.\n“A strong connection can be made between Foxpalmer and Fleetwood Mac” – The Voice Magazine\n“A fantastic voice and acoustic playing reminiscent of Tracey Chapman” – Fireworks Magazine \nApproximate show timings:\nDoors open: 7pm\nFoxpalmer: 7:30pm – 8pm\ninterval: 8pm – 8:30pm\nThe Blackheart Orchestra: 8:30pm – 9:50pm \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: DUSKI
DESCRIPTION:DUSKI made their SoundCellar debut in 2018 and we felt it was time to have them back again – this time they come to us as a quartet. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThe band began as a chordless trio in darkest Wales comprising of sax\, double bass and drums. Piano was added and slowly the jazz styles disappeared\, while heavy jams and collective improvising took its place. The piano morphed into different synthesisers and tape loops and the double bass cracked open to reveal its electric counterpart. Standard chord progression melted away to reveal the dark minimalist progressive rock band that is Duski. \n “A contemporary group playing fresh\, original music that deserves to be seen and heard” – The Jazz Mann \nDuski toured the UK three times to promote their eponymous debut album. During this process\, the band started developing new music that ended up dominating the set: a new album was on the horizon. The band entered Giant Wafer Studio in September 2018 and took three days to craft the album ‘Make a Wish’. Traditional form of melody and then lots of soloing took a sideline\, replaced by group improvisations based more on image and texture. Most of the album was recorded live in a few takes along with overdubbing. \n“Duski’s set shows originality\, quality and productive collaboration” – Nigel Jarrett\, Jazz Journal \n“‘Make A Wish’ is a world class album that should propel Duski to the forefront of the UK Jazz scene” – Francis Brown\, New Sounds Wales \nDuski’s sound evolved again throughout 2020’s lockdown\, the result of which is their most recent release 2021’s “Pillow Talk Sessions 1” on Ropeadope.  Conversations between tenor saxophone & double bass entwine; drawing out delicate notes that allow space for reflection with brooding overtones of tension ever-present. Aidan Thorne struts along the double bass\, bowing earthly drones for Greg Sterland’s searching tenor saxophone reminiscent of the considered European jazz leanings of early Portico Quartet. Another welcome addition to the impressive British jazz scene. \nThis SoundCellar gig will feature an eclectic mix of ‘Pillow Talk’ improvisations\, along with ‘Make A Wish’ group material – an evening not to be missed! \nAidan Thorne: Bass\nGreg Sterland: Saxes\nPaul Jones: Keyboards\nMatt Holmes: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present MARK LOCKHEART for his SoundCellar debut\, when Mark brings his fabulous band ‘Dreamers’ here to Poole. This new all star group explores Mark’s multi-faceted outlook on music\, through a new set of original compositions that can be heard on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’. Urgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies. Wide ranging influences from Ellington and Shorter to John Zorn\, the Beatles and even Kraftwerk! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera (one of SoundCellar John’s absolute favourites). \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large orchestral works (e.g. 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’ is another of John’s favourites)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with pianist Huw Warren. \n“From Loose Tubes to Polar Bear and beyond\, Lockheart’s capacity to be ahead of the jazz curve is undeniable. In this new band his combination of lyrical economy and harmonic creativity has found three improvisatory soulmates who clearly know how to make the most of his compositions in their own terms” Jazzwise magazine \nMark’s new ensemble Dreamers includes a long overdue return to SoundCellar of Elliot Galvin on keys\, along with Tom Herbert on bass and an even longer overdue return of Dave Smith on drums. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine **** \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nPhotograph by Joel Baxter \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: MATT RIDLEY'S 'THE ANTIDOTE' QUINTET
DESCRIPTION:It has been a while since we had the excellent bass player and composer Matt Ridley at SoundCellar\, so we are thrilled to now welcome him back!  He comes to us with his quintet The Antidote\, all of whom are former ‘graduates’ of SoundCellar from various ensembles over the years! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThe Antidote are an exciting young contemporary jazz quintet\, featuring leading lights of the UK scene. Brainchild of bassist Matt Ridley\, the music is firmly rooted within the contemporary jazz discipline\, and also emanates both rock overtones and classical influences\, evolved from decades of genuine passion for music. Matt inhabits his own space within the creative diaspora\, being able to navigate a broad spectrum of inspirations and transform them into a vibrant and exciting sound. \nThe Antidote features the formidable quintet of Alex Hitchcock on saxophone\, Ant Law on guitar\, Tom Hewson on piano\, Marc Michel on drums\, and of course Matt Ridley on bass. With an insistence on detailed\, expressive and thought-through compositions\, Ridley allows time and space for both himself and his band members to express and showcase both their individual and collective talents through dynamic improvisation. The synergy between the group and a mutual understanding of each players’ specific nuances are more than apparent\, while still allowing enough freedom for independent flair to shine though. \nCombining this with the more melodic and compositional aspects of the music makes for a truly engaging experience. Rather than a ‘leader + sidemen’ attitude\, Ridley has cultivated a genuine ‘band’ sound\, as Tom Hewson elucidates: \n“This project totally captured my imagination from the first minute of rehearsal. Matt has managed to create something full of incredible compositional range whilst staying totally grounded with this immediate\, unpretentious sense of energy. As someone that came to jazz through rock and prog\, I love that feeling of unshackling\, that desire not to hold back from. The whole band really bought into the spirit from the start – something you can really hear on the record\, and something that definitely comes across live.” \nThe eponymous debut album\, released in 2021\, is a firm favourite of SoundCellar’s John and received glowing reviews from across the globe from coveted publications such as Downbeat Magazine\, BBC Music Magazine\, Jazzwise\, Ivan Rod (Denmark)\, JazzMania (Belgium) and Presto Music. The album also received a nomination for ‘Best Jazz Album of 2021’ in the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards UK\, as well as making the Jazzwise ‘20 best jazz albums of 2021’ (worldwide) list. Incidentally\, John also highly recommends the digital-only release of three extra pieces “The Antidote Reloaded” on Matt’s Bandcamp page. \n‘One of the strongest releases by homegrown jazz talent in 2021′  **** Editors Choice\, Jazzwise Magazine \n‘His assuredness shines through in this set of taut\, modernist originals\, and his band are engaged and supportive’ **** BBC Music Magazine \n‘It’s both Ridley’s excellent usage of his collaborators and his penchant for melody that is undoubtedly the main appeal of his music’ Recording of the Week\, Presto Music \nLine-up\nMatt Ridley – Bass\nAlex Hitchcock – Sax\nAnt Law – Guitar\nTom Hewson – Keys\nMarc Michel – Drums \nMake sure you catch yet another wonderful young jazz ensemble that we are so pleased to be able to present for your delectation\, here in deepest Dorset! \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:Postponed - LIVESTREAM: THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, this October we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nTwo people\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington\, playing 13 instruments\, they perform in the centre of a circle of instruments that has been described as their ‘musical space station’ and ‘instrumental laboratory’. Their music combines ethereal vocals with multi-layered combinations of acoustic instruments such as guitar and mandola\, rock instruments including electric guitar\, bass and percussion\, plus piano\, organ\, electronica\, orchestral and symphonic sounds\, omnichords and their collection of vintage synthesisers. The music is emotional with Metal Planet saying “Their music reaches areas of your head and heart that you never knew existed.” \nThey draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a truly unique sound\, frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Steve Reich\, Philip Glass\, Portishead and Kate Bush. Simultaneously symphonic and psychedelic\, classical and totally contemporary. \nAfter 1000+ gigs from Southampton to Sydney and 6 acclaimed albums\, they’ve performed everywhere from intimate venues to London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall\, sharing stages with everyone from Hawkwind to Eric Clapton. \nThe band’s most recent album ‘Mesmeranto’ reached #16 in the UK Indie Chart\, #18 in the UK Rock Chart\, #4 in the USA’s Big Takeover Albums of the Year and was voted twice in the Rock Writers’ Top 20 Albums of the Year. They won Best British Duo. They were voted #4 Best New Band in the UK. Chrissy Mostyn was recently voted #5 Best Female Vocalist in PROG Magazine’s Readers’ Poll\, and their lockdown online concert series The Big Armchair Concerts was voted #10 in Most Important Rock Events of 2020. \nThey will be performing songs from their wonderful back catalogue and from their soon to be released 7th album ‘Hotel Utopia’\, due out this summer. \nThey have been described as “A mesmerising powerhouse” and “An avant-garde musical utopia”. Louder Than War declared their music “A life-enhancing listening event”\, Steve Hackett of Genesis described it as “Powerful and inspiring” and fan Phil Campbell of Motörhead described it as “******* beautiful”. \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, long time fan John from the SoundCellar team and his more recently ‘converted’ colleague Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their UK tour to promote the new album. \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
