SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: PETER URPETH with Jon Lloyd\, Al Swainger and Rob Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Writer and pianist Peter Urpeth will be joined by saxophonist Jon Lloyd\, bassist and sonic manipulator Al Swainger and guitarist Rob Palmer for an evening of poetry and ambient jazz. Peter will be performing his poetry from “The 4000 Nights of New York in 1988”\, his latest anthology.\n \nLivestream Ticket link below \nPeter Urpeth is a writer\, journalist\, editor\, writing and creativity mentor\, pianist\, composer and creative business consultant. He has an MA in Multi-media Journalism from Edinburgh Napier University\, and 35 years of experience in journalism. He is a published novelist and poet\, and has been the editor of four local newspapers in Scotland after being a magazine section editor at Time Out\, London during its heyday years as a magazine. He has published one novel\, two collections of poetry and his work has been widely anthologised. His documentary film – Manna – Jazz and Survival in East Harlem – opened at the African World Film Festival\, Detroit in 2019. In a long creative career Peter has also been a TV and radio presenter. \nAs a pianist and composer Peter has worked for more than thirty years  in jazz and free improvisation. He has performed with saxophonist Evan Parker\, bassist Olie Brice\, vocalist Maggie Nicols and many others. He also composes new scores and performs live to classic and rare silent movies. In the last decade he has received seven major commissions for new scores to classic films\, ranging from Nosferatu to The Passion of Joan of Arc and Nanook of The North. \nPeter lives and works from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. \nSaxophonist Jon Lloyd arrived on the UK free jazz scene in the early 1990s and rose to prominence with recordings on Leo records and HatHut\, and with many UK and European concerts with his quartet comprising John Law\, Paul Rogers and Mark Sanders. Highlights during this period included Berlin’s FMP Festival\, several Arts Council tours and the 1993 Contemporary Music Network tour of the UK with the Bill Frisell Band! Over the years Jon has embraced contemporary composition\, abstract improv and American jazz and fusion\, but in the last decade has primarily developed his music towards the European jazz aesthetic\, notably recording “Vanishing Points” in 2013 with Asaf Sirkis\, Tom Farmer\, John Law and Rob Palmer. In 2022 Jon was involved with John Law’s multi-media “Renaissance”\, which toured in cathedrals throughout the UK\, and in 2023 he is busy promoting his European Contemporary Jazz quartet “The Jon Lloyd Quartet”. \nAs a multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer\, Al Swainger is both eclectic and transformative. His use of FX pedals and computer manipulation provide an extensive and original tonal palette with which to sculpt his music. His project Pointless Beauty’s most recent album ‘Hearts Full of Grace’ blends influences from ambient\, Latin\, rock\, pop and electronica with improvised music and presents is a very personal take on what jazz or progressive music could be. \nGuitarist Rob Palmer has worked with saxophonist Theo Travis\, pianist John Law\, vibes player Roger Beaujolais\, USA vocalist Lila Ammons\, violinist Phil Wachsmann\, vocalist Véronique Joly and is a member of the ambient/groove/electronica trio Echo Engine. \nPeter Urpeth – poetry/piano\nJon Lloyd – saxophone\nAl Swainger – bass/electronics\nRob Palmer – guitar/electronics \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: WANG / LUFT / FÄLT TRIO - CLOSENESS
DESCRIPTION:One of our unquestionable highlights of 2023 will be an appearance by the Wang / Luft / Fält Trio presenting their superb album Closeness\, along with some brand new material. Because of his passion for the band and a desire for them to be seen and heard on this side of the North Sea\, SoundCellar‘s John has stepped in and successfully arranged an 8-date tour of England & Wales for the band\, culminating in the final show here in Poole\, before they fly off to perform at a Festival in Sweden! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nBorn and raised in Norway\, bassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaborations with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, to performances at major Jazz Festivals\, to her appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio\, Wang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nEllen Andrea Wang’s third studio album\, Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. In what now seems prescient\, the album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and three selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman)\, Traditional (Wayfaring Stranger) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike. The Guardian \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ (eg as a BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now\, as we saw on two different occasions in 2022 at SoundCellar! In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in Oct 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release on ECM in 2023. \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. His lightness of touch\, coupled with a strong musical sensibility\, fits perfectly with this thrillingly dynamic ‘international’ trio. \n‘Closeness’ has received much critical acclaim since its release in September 2020\, such as: \nAlbum of the year 2020 – Vårt Land (Norwegian newspaper) \n4/5 stars “She is one of the best contemporary jazz artists” – Dagens Industri (Swedish newspaper) \n**** and ‘Editor’s choice’ for Nov 2020 – Jazzwise (UK magazine) \nHaving played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival and with dates in Germany and Norway coming up in April/May this year\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nEllen Andrea Wang: Bass and Vocals\nRob Luft: Guitar\nJon Fält: Drums and percussion \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA plus support FOXPALMER
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you The Blackheart Orchestra – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nTwo people playing 13 instruments between them\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a unique sound frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Portishead and Kate Bush as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. \nDescribed as an ”Avant garde musical utopia”\, they perform in their ‘musical space station’ of instruments including guitar\, bass\, percussion\, mandola\, piano\, organ\, omnichord and vintage synthesisers. After over 1000 concerts and now 7 albums\, they’ve played everywhere from Southampton to Sydney including London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall while piling up achievements from a nomination for the Progressive Music Limelight Award\, Best British Duo\, #4 Best New British Band\, and #10 Most Important Rock Event of 2020. \nMore recently their universally applauded 2022 album Hotel Utopia went straight into the UK Rock Chart at #13\, single If You Tolerate This made #22 in the iTunes chart and Chrissy Mostyn was voted #5 World Female Vocalist in Prog Magazine’s Readers’ Poll. \n“Epic” – Uncut \n“Ethereal” – Sunday Express \n“A life-enhancing listening experience” – Louder Than War \n“Reaches areas of your head and heart you never knew existed” – Metal Planet Music \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, both SoundCellar’s John and the more recently ‘converted’ Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra. Their SoundCellar gig scheduled in late 2022\, fell foul of an unfortunate injury for one of the band\, but all is now well\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their 2023 UK tour to promote the new album. \nLatest addition: Support act Foxpalmer has been announced for the tour and will open the evening at 7:30pm prompt \nFoxpalmer aka Fern McNulty is a London-based singer-songwriter. She combines the genres of acoustic\, rock and folk to create deep\, tearful and soulful music. Her unique sound\, original music and captivating live shows have won her considerable airplay and performances at a number of UK festivals including Godiva and Celtic Connections.\n“A strong connection can be made between Foxpalmer and Fleetwood Mac” – The Voice Magazine\n“A fantastic voice and acoustic playing reminiscent of Tracey Chapman” – Fireworks Magazine \nApproximate show timings:\nDoors open: 7pm\nFoxpalmer: 7:30pm – 8pm\ninterval: 8pm – 8:30pm\nThe Blackheart Orchestra: 8:30pm – 9:50pm \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: DUSKI
DESCRIPTION:DUSKI made their SoundCellar debut in 2018 and we felt it was time to have them back again – this time they come to us as a quartet. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThe band began as a chordless trio in darkest Wales comprising of sax\, double bass and drums. Piano was added and slowly the jazz styles disappeared\, while heavy jams and collective improvising took its place. The piano morphed into different synthesisers and tape loops and the double bass cracked open to reveal its electric counterpart. Standard chord progression melted away to reveal the dark minimalist progressive rock band that is Duski. \n “A contemporary group playing fresh\, original music that deserves to be seen and heard” – The Jazz Mann \nDuski toured the UK three times to promote their eponymous debut album. During this process\, the band started developing new music that ended up dominating the set: a new album was on the horizon. The band entered Giant Wafer Studio in September 2018 and took three days to craft the album ‘Make a Wish’. Traditional form of melody and then lots of soloing took a sideline\, replaced by group improvisations based more on image and texture. Most of the album was recorded live in a few takes along with overdubbing. \n“Duski’s set shows originality\, quality and productive collaboration” – Nigel Jarrett\, Jazz Journal \n“‘Make A Wish’ is a world class album that should propel Duski to the forefront of the UK Jazz scene” – Francis Brown\, New Sounds Wales \nDuski’s sound evolved again throughout 2020’s lockdown\, the result of which is their most recent release 2021’s “Pillow Talk Sessions 1” on Ropeadope.  Conversations between tenor saxophone & double bass entwine; drawing out delicate notes that allow space for reflection with brooding overtones of tension ever-present. Aidan Thorne struts along the double bass\, bowing earthly drones for Greg Sterland’s searching tenor saxophone reminiscent of the considered European jazz leanings of early Portico Quartet. Another welcome addition to the impressive British jazz scene. \nThis SoundCellar gig will feature an eclectic mix of ‘Pillow Talk’ improvisations\, along with ‘Make A Wish’ group material – an evening not to be missed! \nAidan Thorne: Bass\nGreg Sterland: Saxes\nPaul Jones: Keyboards\nMatt Holmes: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present MARK LOCKHEART for his SoundCellar debut\, when Mark brings his fabulous band ‘Dreamers’ here to Poole. This new all star group explores Mark’s multi-faceted outlook on music\, through a new set of original compositions that can be heard on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’. Urgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies. Wide ranging influences from Ellington and Shorter to John Zorn\, the Beatles and even Kraftwerk! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera (one of SoundCellar John’s absolute favourites). \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large orchestral works (e.g. 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’ is another of John’s favourites)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with pianist Huw Warren. \n“From Loose Tubes to Polar Bear and beyond\, Lockheart’s capacity to be ahead of the jazz curve is undeniable. In this new band his combination of lyrical economy and harmonic creativity has found three improvisatory soulmates who clearly know how to make the most of his compositions in their own terms” Jazzwise magazine \nMark’s new ensemble Dreamers includes a long overdue return to SoundCellar of Elliot Galvin on keys\, along with Tom Herbert on bass and an even longer overdue return of Dave Smith on drums. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine **** \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nPhotograph by Joel Baxter \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: ANT LAW & ALEX HITCHCOCK QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed as composers as well as instrumentalists\, sharing multiple awards\, an Ivor Novello nomination and seven albums as leaders between them\, Ant Law and Alex Hitchcock return to SoundCellar\, following their appearance at The Grasshopper in 2022 (in Matt Ridley’s band). \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nGuitarist Ant and saxophonist Alex have each brought their own ensembles to SoundCellar in previous years\, but this is the first time they come to us as co-leaders\, in support of their highly lauded album Same Moon in the Same World\, released in November 2022. \nSame Moon in the Same World is an ambitious collaboration between two musicians who have created a startlingly vivid and mature soundworld\, brought to life by a carefully-curated selection of the world’s most distinctive and virtuosic improvisors.  Recorded in 2020 and 2021 across multiple continents – bridging the gap between London and Tel-Aviv\, and Amsterdam and New York\, it is testament to both Ant’s and Alex’s burgeoning reputations\, that they were able to enlist the services of some of the finest musicians on the planet! \nThe album brings together a stellar cast of guests performing new compositions: vibraphonist Joel Ross; bassists Linda May Han Oh\, Ben Williams and Jasper Høiby; drummers Jeff Ballard\, Kendrick Scott\, Sun-Mi Hong and Eric Harland; pianist Shai Maestro and saxophonist Tim Garland. \nFor their SoundCellar performance\, Ant and Alex have a fabulous rhythm section\, comprising of two further top class international musicians: Conor Chaplin hardly needs any introduction to our SoundCellar audiences\, as he is quite simply one of the UK’s most in-demand bassists\, and Grammy nominated Cuban drummer extraordinaire Ernesto Simpson (Arturo Sandoval\, Richard Bona\, Candy Dulfer & many others). \n“What a gamechanger he can be” \n(Ant Law) The Guardian \n“Leading the charge in terms of new jazz music being created in the UK”\n(Alex Hitchcock) BBC Radio \nAnt Law: Guitar\nAlex Hitchcock: Saxophone\nConor Chaplin: Bass\nErnesto Simpson: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:It has been a while since we had the excellent bass player and composer Matt Ridley at SoundCellar\, so we are thrilled to now welcome him back!  He comes to us with his quintet The Antidote\, all of whom are former ‘graduates’ of SoundCellar from various ensembles over the years! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThe Antidote are an exciting young contemporary jazz quintet\, featuring leading lights of the UK scene. Brainchild of bassist Matt Ridley\, the music is firmly rooted within the contemporary jazz discipline\, and also emanates both rock overtones and classical influences\, evolved from decades of genuine passion for music. Matt inhabits his own space within the creative diaspora\, being able to navigate a broad spectrum of inspirations and transform them into a vibrant and exciting sound. \nThe Antidote features the formidable quintet of Alex Hitchcock on saxophone\, Ant Law on guitar\, Tom Hewson on piano\, Marc Michel on drums\, and of course Matt Ridley on bass. With an insistence on detailed\, expressive and thought-through compositions\, Ridley allows time and space for both himself and his band members to express and showcase both their individual and collective talents through dynamic improvisation. The synergy between the group and a mutual understanding of each players’ specific nuances are more than apparent\, while still allowing enough freedom for independent flair to shine though. \nCombining this with the more melodic and compositional aspects of the music makes for a truly engaging experience. Rather than a ‘leader + sidemen’ attitude\, Ridley has cultivated a genuine ‘band’ sound\, as Tom Hewson elucidates: \n“This project totally captured my imagination from the first minute of rehearsal. Matt has managed to create something full of incredible compositional range whilst staying totally grounded with this immediate\, unpretentious sense of energy. As someone that came to jazz through rock and prog\, I love that feeling of unshackling\, that desire not to hold back from. The whole band really bought into the spirit from the start – something you can really hear on the record\, and something that definitely comes across live.” \nThe eponymous debut album\, released in 2021\, is a firm favourite of SoundCellar’s John and received glowing reviews from across the globe from coveted publications such as Downbeat Magazine\, BBC Music Magazine\, Jazzwise\, Ivan Rod (Denmark)\, JazzMania (Belgium) and Presto Music. The album also received a nomination for ‘Best Jazz Album of 2021’ in the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards UK\, as well as making the Jazzwise ‘20 best jazz albums of 2021’ (worldwide) list. Incidentally\, John also highly recommends the digital-only release of three extra pieces “The Antidote Reloaded” on Matt’s Bandcamp page. \n‘One of the strongest releases by homegrown jazz talent in 2021′  **** Editors Choice\, Jazzwise Magazine \n‘His assuredness shines through in this set of taut\, modernist originals\, and his band are engaged and supportive’ **** BBC Music Magazine \n‘It’s both Ridley’s excellent usage of his collaborators and his penchant for melody that is undoubtedly the main appeal of his music’ Recording of the Week\, Presto Music \nLine-up\nMatt Ridley – Bass\nAlex Hitchcock – Sax\nAnt Law – Guitar\nTom Hewson – Keys\nMarc Michel – Drums \nMake sure you catch yet another wonderful young jazz ensemble that we are so pleased to be able to present for your delectation\, here in deepest Dorset! \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:Postponed - LIVESTREAM: THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, this October we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nTwo people\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington\, playing 13 instruments\, they perform in the centre of a circle of instruments that has been described as their ‘musical space station’ and ‘instrumental laboratory’. Their music combines ethereal vocals with multi-layered combinations of acoustic instruments such as guitar and mandola\, rock instruments including electric guitar\, bass and percussion\, plus piano\, organ\, electronica\, orchestral and symphonic sounds\, omnichords and their collection of vintage synthesisers. The music is emotional with Metal Planet saying “Their music reaches areas of your head and heart that you never knew existed.” \nThey draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a truly unique sound\, frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Steve Reich\, Philip Glass\, Portishead and Kate Bush. Simultaneously symphonic and psychedelic\, classical and totally contemporary. \nAfter 1000+ gigs from Southampton to Sydney and 6 acclaimed albums\, they’ve performed everywhere from intimate venues to London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall\, sharing stages with everyone from Hawkwind to Eric Clapton. \nThe band’s most recent album ‘Mesmeranto’ reached #16 in the UK Indie Chart\, #18 in the UK Rock Chart\, #4 in the USA’s Big Takeover Albums of the Year and was voted twice in the Rock Writers’ Top 20 Albums of the Year. They won Best British Duo. They were voted #4 Best New Band in the UK. Chrissy Mostyn was recently voted #5 Best Female Vocalist in PROG Magazine’s Readers’ Poll\, and their lockdown online concert series The Big Armchair Concerts was voted #10 in Most Important Rock Events of 2020. \nThey will be performing songs from their wonderful back catalogue and from their soon to be released 7th album ‘Hotel Utopia’\, due out this summer. \nThey have been described as “A mesmerising powerhouse” and “An avant-garde musical utopia”. Louder Than War declared their music “A life-enhancing listening event”\, Steve Hackett of Genesis described it as “Powerful and inspiring” and fan Phil Campbell of Motörhead described it as “******* beautiful”. \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, long time fan John from the SoundCellar team and his more recently ‘converted’ colleague Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their UK tour to promote the new album. \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: MIKE OUTRAM-ROB LUFT QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Two of SoundCellar’s absolute favourites together in one gig – now that’s not to be missed! We present Master guitarists (not an exaggeration) Mike Outram and Rob Luft in a very rare collaboration. Both having played for us earlier this year (Mike with his own trio and Rob with Alice Zawadzki)\, we are certain that SoundCellar regulars will instantly wish to attend and will recommend this gig to anyone else who enquires! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nAs if that’s not exciting enough\, they also have a killer rhythm section of further SoundCellar ‘legends’ – bassist Joe Downard (Alex Hitchcock\, NYJO) and drummer Corrie Dick (Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, Rob Luft). Indeed they both have great solo albums themselves – Corrie’s ‘Impossible Things’ in particular\, is one of SoundCellar John’s absolute favourites and excitingly there’s a new one from him on the horizon too! \nMike Outram has played many times at SoundCellar since his debut for us in 2011\, featuring in different ensembles with amazing artists such as Roz Harding\, Karen Street\, Theo Travis\, Pete Callard\, Martin Speake\, Tony Woods\, and Paul & Jeremy Stacey. No matter who he has been playing with\, his mastery of the guitar has always been a major talking point after the gig\, by our discerning audiences! \nHe has also worked and recorded with such luminaries as Steven Wilson\, Carleen Anderson\, Tim Garland\, Asaf Sirkis\, Gareth Lockrane\, Robert Fripp\, Hamish Stuart\, Laurence Cottle\, Julian Siegel\, Nikki Iles\, Laura Rossi & many others. He was the recipient of the 2016 Kenny Wheeler Prize from the Royal Academy of Music\, and he also received the 2nd Prize in the 2016 Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival. \nHis debut album\, “Riser”\, was released on Edition Records in 2017 to widespread acclaim from the European jazz media. John Fordham wrote in The Guardian that it’s a “very sophisticated debut\, but given Luft’s old-soul achievements since his early teens\, we should have heard it coming”. Subsequently\, on the back of the success of his first album\, Rob was nominated for a string of awards – Breakthrough Act in the 2018 Jazz FM Awards\, Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2020 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2019 Jazz FM Awards. In May 2019\, Rob was selected as a BBC New Generation Jazz Artist. \nRob’s eagerly-awaited second album\, “Life is the Dancer”\, was released in April 2020 on Edition Records to critical acclaim. SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - ATLANTICUS
DESCRIPTION:ATLANTICUS is a unique British–American musical partnership bringing together two powerfully distinct musical personalities\, US saxophonist Peter Fraize and UK organist Terry Seabrook\, to explore their common interest in the rich transatlantic heritage of jazz. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig\nLivestream Ticket link below \nATLANTICUS draws from the storied tradition of the great Hammond organ groups\, with a post–modern sound echoing the ground–breaking organ quartet of Larry Young’s Unity album. The music is mostly original\, spanning a stylistic spectrum from the hard bop blowout of the album’s title track ‘Blue Haven’\, the modal explorations of ‘That’s What’\, the odd–metered boogaloo of ‘Swank’\, and the Afro–Cuban reimagining of the Bobby Timmons classic ‘Moanin’’.Peter and Terry were introduced through a mutual friend and first teamed up for a short UK tour in 2016\, recruiting Brighton heavyweights trumpeter Jack Kendon and drummer Milo Fell to round out the lineup. From the very first gig\, their immediate and natural musical rapport sealed the transatlantic bonds for what has now become ATLANTICUS. The band delivered exciting high–energy performances to delighted crowds\, culminating in a head–turning performance at the Love Supreme festival. Building on that success\, the quartet convened once again in the summer of 2018 for a 25–date\, month–long tour of the southern UK\, playing clubs and festivals from London to Wales.By the end of their 2018 tour\, the band knew it was imperative to go in the studio and document their remarkable chemistry. The result is Blue Haven\, featuring nine original compositions by Peter and Terry along with invigorating arrangements of two classic standards. The entire album was recorded in a single day\, capturing all the vibe\, excitement and groove of the group’s live performances that UK fans have known about since 2016. The band is looking forward to touring in support of the release of this dynamic new recording in the summer of 2022. \nTerry Seabrook – organ\nPeter Fraize – tenor saxophone\nJack Kendon – trumpet\nMilo Fell – drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - HARRY CHRISTELIS & PEDRO VELASCO
DESCRIPTION:The forward thinking guitar duo of Harry Christelis & Pedro Velasco make their SoundCellar debut as part of a national tour to promote their debut release ‘Scribbling’ (Ubuntu Music). \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig\nLivestream Ticket link below \nHarry Christelis and Pedro Velasco form a guitar duo that explores and challenges the boundaries of improvised music. Theirs is a melting pot of jazz and folk harmony\, immersive sonic textures\, and calm\, introspective moments that are interjected with wild intensity. In a world that rushes to excite and distract\, their music focuses on taking time to develop and create space. This often-understated approach puts just as much emphasis on the notes that are not played\, as the ones that are. \nThe partnership was born in 2016\, when the two London-based guitarists came together for a concert and discovered a like-minded approach to music. Their musical connection has developed with each meeting since. They share a respect of jazz traditions but also a love of expanding these to incorporate elements from folk and electronic music\, as well as ambient styles and free improvisation. Together\, they’ve built a unique\, intimate setup and found a way of conversing that’s equally unassuming and thought-provoking. \nThey recorded their first album\, ‘Scribbling’\, in December 2020. The result is a truly distinct album that challenges the ideas of what a guitar duo should sound like. Some tracks might transport you to a sound world that feels like it belongs in outer space\, others as if you’re immersed in the depths of the ocean. It is\, however\, a beautifully balanced piece of work that keeps its feet firmly rooted in traditions of the instruments and the music they are playing. \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event

Emma is a recipient of the 2021 Drake Yolanda Award. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig\nLivestream Ticket link below \nEmma’s influences range from modern jazz and fusion to folk and soul\, key figures in her musical development including Chris Potter\, Ari Hoenig\, Kenny Jarrett\, Joe Henderson\, Chick Corea and more.  Growing up in rural North Devon\, Emma didn’t discover jazz until the age of 15\, and didn’t pick up a tenor saxophone until a year later\, but had spent her childhood otherwise immersed in largely folk and classical music. \n“Hugely promising… [Rawicz] has a fantastic sound” (Marlbank) \nEmma is a natural performer. Her music has a unique sound\, fusing all her many influences\, and her compositions range from lilting Afro Cuban inspired grooves to hard hitting modern jazz and funk numbers. \nIf proof was ever needed of just how highly regarded she is in the musical circles of the UK jazz scene\, just one glance at the line-up of her band for this evening will immediately provide that ‘proof’!  All of them are extremely well known and recognised as fabulous musicians by our SoundCellar audience – in fact we are welcoming back only a couple of months since their most recent visit\, the superb combination of Ivo Neame on piano and Conor Chaplin on bass\, plus playing at The Avocet for us for the first time\, previous frequent cellar visitors and amazing players David Preston on guitar and Asaf Sirkis on drums!  We could hardly hand-pick a better band if we had complete freedom to choose whoever we wanted! \nWe are certain you will agree this is an evening not to be missed\, featuring an “awesome” band backing Emma as one of the brightest stars on the UK scene\, so it promises to be an amazing night. \nEmma Rawicz – Saxes\, Bass Clarinet & Flute\nIvo Neame – Piano\nDavid Preston – Guitar\nConor Chaplin – Bass\nAsaf Sirkis – Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event
