SUMMARY:PHILIP CLOUTS (piano)
DESCRIPTION:Cape Town born pianist and composer Philip Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a voyage of discovery that has led to him soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso\, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs\, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. \nThe Philip Clouts Quartet has been a major focus of his composing and playing\, and the latest album ‘Umoya\,’ is titled from the Zulu word for ‘life force’. Philip’s career has included playing at Ronnie Scott’s\, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Glastonbury Festival. His music has been played on BBC’s Jamie Cullum Show\, and Jazz FM has praised it\, saying “it has a very infectious feel-good quality.” \n“The best of British jazz” Chris Phillips Jazz FM\n“Precise ebullience and relaxed funkiness” The Guardian\n“A revelatory experience” UK Vibe\n“Clouts’ compositions are strong and likeable” All About Jazz \nIn this solo setting Philip will be presenting his work in an intimate context\, highlighting the wide variety of moods in the music. He’ll then take part in an increasingly popular part of these events – the post-performance Q & A session. Having first played at SoundCellar back in 2011\, we are very pleased to be presenting Philip as our next SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation artist. \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. This will provide those who join us on the night with the opportunity to relive the whole event and also give those who cannot make it on the night\, the chance to watch it all later. \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:ZOË GILBY (voice) and ANDY CHAMPION (bass)
DESCRIPTION:In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation with ZOË GILBY and ANDY CHAMPION – Thurs 22nd Oct \nWe had Zoë Gilby booked to play with her band (including Andy Champion) at SoundCellar in 2019\, but for a number of reasons it didn’t happen\, so we are really pleased to now be able to bring them to you from their home in the North East of England\, as one of our In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation artists.\nWinner of Parliamentary Jazz Awards Jazz Vocalist of The Year 2019\, Zoë has teamed up with her husband\, the innovative and powerful double bassist Andy Champion for a voice and double bass duo. This exceptional pairing create an electrifying soundscape in this beautifully integrated music. Breathing fresh life into the familiar as well as heading off to the unchartered. The well-honed duo know each other by heart. Their approach is bold\, hypnotic and mesmerizing. Interacting and infiltrating one another’s sound. Removing the boundaries\, exploring space and time with just voice and double bass. Inspired by the legendary Sheila Jordan\, this exciting project has been taking audiences by storm throughout the UK and Europe and highlights Zoë’s ingenuity in interpreting a lyric. \n“the instinctive interplay between the two performers and the opportunity it gives Zoë Gilby to display her vocal improvisational skills and subtle lyrical interpretations of well-chosen songs and Andy Champion to foreground all the possibilities of his double bass.” \n“a fantastic gig with both performers demonstrating their dexterous versatility with a great selection of songs\, changing tempo and tone\, improvising and embellishing at will.” \nMake sure you catch SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation with Zoë Gilby and Andy Champion \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. DESCRIPTION:This performance by Theo Travis at SoundCellar on 30 July 2020 will be his first ever live streamed performance\, and a rare opportunity to hear him in a solo context. Expect music from his solo albums – ‘Slow Life’ and ‘Open Air’\, ambient and experimental improvisations\, imaginative and radical rearrangements of pieces from Theo’s albums such as ‘Heart of the Sun’ and ‘Earth to Ether’\, a cover of a John Surman classic\, alto flute\, soprano sax\, tenor sax and possibly a surprise or two as well. \nTheo has released 10 acclaimed solo albums\, for which he composed\, arranged\, produced all the material and played saxophones and flute and he has played on over 130 albums in total. He has performed over 70 times at London’s Ronnie Scott’s club\, tours the UK regularly with his jazz quartet\, and has performed all over the world including Japan\, Norway\, Finland\, Sweden\, the USA\, France\, Italy\,  Belgium\, Switzerland\, Spain\,  Denmark\, Germany and Israel.  He has released recordings made live in New York\, Philadelphia\, Tokyo\, London\, Paris and Oslo. \nAs a sonic experimentalist\, he has developed his own system of ambitronics\, which utilises looping technology to create canvases of sound on flutes and saxes that are then woven into the music he makes. Such music\, performed on the alto flute\, was first released on Theo’s acclaimed album Slow Life\, which was credited as the inspiration behind the Jonathan Coe novel “The Rain before it Falls”. Theo has developed this technique and incorporated it into his work with Robert Fripp (5 CDs\, 3 download albums/ vinyl releases/ 3 tours)\, David Sylvian (Nine Horses CD and European tour)\, Soft Machine (4 albums\, many international festivals and tours 2006 to date)\, Gong (2 studio CDs\, 3 live albums\, 2 DVDs\, 3 world tours) and his unique solo performances. \nHe has also collaborated with other musicians including Harold Budd\, Roger Eno\, Palle Mikkelborg\, Anja Garbarek\, John Foxx\, Bill Nelson\, Keith Tippett\, Mick Karn\, Steven Wilson\, Hatfield and the North\, Jah Wobble\, John Etheridge and Lol Coxhill \nMOJO magazine referred to him as “a brave and restless talent to watch for”. \nSee www.theotravis.com \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:JOHN LAW (piano)
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space is a performance by one of our most popular and frequent visitors to the cellar and indeed one of the first to play for us in our inaugural year 2010 – the acclaimed pianist John Law. He has played with many stars from the world of contemporary improvised music such as Evan Parker\, Gwilym Simcock\, Andy Sheppard\, Jason Rebello and Tim Garland and has received many plaudits during his career e.g. “One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists” (International Piano Magazine 2014) and “One of this country’s most imaginative young pianists” (The Times) \nJohn has returned to SoundCellar with a number of different ensembles over the years and we are very pleased to have him play for us again as part of our In Our Own Space series. With a great new John Law’s Congregation album ‘Configuration’ (Ubuntu Music) recently released\, John will be performing from his own space this evening\, entertaining us with his creative\, melodic and acknowledged virtuoso piano playing. \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite. \nShare this event
