SUMMARY:DAVE MANINGTON'S RIFF RAFF
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back Dave Manington‘s Riff Raff to SoundCellar as part of a UK tour. The 6 piece band (featuring Ivo Neame on piano) produce music that is intimate and creative\, with a delicate interplay forged from many years performing together. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nPlease note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper\, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room. \nTicket link below \nBassist and composer Dave Manington is one of the mainstays of the London jazz scene\, a founder member of the Loop Collective\, he has played with many of the pre-eminent jazz musicians in the UK and Europe including Julian Arguelles\, Marius Neset and Gwilym Simcock amongst many others. He co-founded the Loop Collective to pool creative resources with other like-minded musicians. His debut quartet album “Headrush” was released on Loop Records in 2008 to critical acclaim. He followed this up with two albums from his band “Riff Raff”\, which were described as “Inventive\, forward-looking jazz that subtly pushes the envelope whilst remaining thoroughly accessible to the listener.” The Jazzmann. He is also a founder member of the much-respected e17 jazz collective\, Tori Freestone’s Trio\, Solstice and Yazz Ahmed’s Quartet. Dave was nominated for an Ivor Novello award for jazz composition in 2022. \nThe group also features a cast of SoundCellar ‘alumni’: vocalist Brigitte Beraha (Kenny Wheeler\, London Jazz Orchestra)\, pianist Ivo Neame (Phronesis\, Marius Neset)\, saxophonist Tom Challenger (Foufolah/Red Snapper)\, guitarist Rob Updegraff (Beth Rowley/Zigaboo Modeliste) and drummer Tim Giles (Iain Ballamy/Art Farmer). The music is sophisticated and full of virtuoso playing\, sometimes freely improvised with an exciting element of risk\, but the song forms\, melodic nature and the empathy and great ensemble playing of the group make it highly accessible. \n“Riff Raff mix the leader’s clever composing with a formidable lineup\, …and the soundscape embraces a 21st century sax-led cool school sound\, raw guitar-fusion\, diffident Wayne Shorteresque lyricism\, and vocals that showcase Beraha’s eloquent lyrics and inventiveness as a wordless improviser.” The Guardian  \n“It also grooves like hell\, with some thick mercurial riffs – full of stops\, starts\, and turns yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum.” Jazzwise \nDave Manington – bass\nBrigitte Beraha – vocals\nIvo Neame – piano\nTom Challenger – saxophone\nRob Updegraff – guitar\nTim Giles – drums \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:CORRIE DICK 'SUN SWELLS'
DESCRIPTION:Having played at SoundCellar last year as drummer with the Outram/Luft Quartet\, we were keen to have CORRIE DICK back to lead his own ensemble for us for the first time since 2016. This time he brings with him some of the best musicians playing in the UK today\, not least undoubted SoundCellar favourites Laura Jurd on trumpet and Rob Luft on guitar\, together with vocalist Rebecka Edlund and bassist Caius Williams. \nThis gig will take place at The Grasshopper\,\n139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd\, Poole BH14 9HT. \nTicket link below \nAs has been articulated elsewhere\, Corrie has established himself at the “…rhythmic epicentre of a new era of innovative British jazz”. His first album under his own name 2015’s ‘Impossible Things’ remains one of those albums that captures and highlights the outstanding quality of a whole generation of musicians that have emerged from the UK touring scene over the last decade or so. \nHe has built this reputation in collaborations with such luminaries as Mark Lockheart\, Jake Long and Jasper Hoiby\, as well as by being a crucial member of such innovative bands as the Rob Luft Group\, the Elliot Galvin Trio\, of Laura Jurd’s numerous ensembles including the Mercury Music Prize shortlisted Dinosaur and of elusive and alternative bands Ink Line and I Don’t Need Light\, Please Give Me Water. \nCorrie’s latest album ‘Sun Swells’ was released (on Ubuntu Music) last year and it has taken another step forward with its mix of Scottish\, Scandinavian\, African and English jazz and folk influences\, together with electronic and rock overtones. To quote Corrie himself: “I wanted to write a jazz album that had rock instrumentation at its core: guitar-bass-drums. Rob Luft (guitar)\, Tom McCredie (bass) and I have been improvising and writing together for years and years and we’ve forged a sound that is uniquely crunchy yet summery\, so I wanted that sound at the centre but decorated with all sorts of elements. I basically wanted to make folk-rock-jazz but treat it how electronic music producer Mura Masa treats his tracks–chucking the whole damn fruit bowl at the thing but somehow keeping space and air in the arrangement and the mix.” \nFor their SoundCellar performance\, Corrie is bringing a great group of musicians and we are really looking forward to the evening. \n“The trumpeter [Laura Jurd] herself and expressive drummer Corrie Dick are both sensations who have made big names for themselves straight out of the blocks. Compared to other genres\, jazz doesn’t really thrive on hype. Their secret is just that they’re really\, really good.” (London Jazz News) \n“Corrie Dick is one of the most gifted drummers I’ve come across in recent years; he’s well on his way to being a visionary both as a musician and composer. With such vibrance and flair there is no doubt in my mind that he will soon assert himself as one of the finest contemporary percussionists on the UK scene.” (NY saxophonist and SoundCellar alumni\, Will Vinson) \nCorrie Dick: Drums\, Percussion\nRebecka Edlund: Voice\nLaura Jurd: Trumpet\nRob Luft: Guitar\nCaius Williams: Bass \nEntry is £15 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £18 on the door (cash or card). \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: THE BLACKHEART ORCHESTRA plus support FOXPALMER
DESCRIPTION:Fitting perfectly with our reputation for presenting the very best in live music\, we’re stepping into a different field from our more regular ‘jazz’ genre\, to bring you The Blackheart Orchestra – officially known as the smallest orchestra in the world! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nTwo people playing 13 instruments between them\, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington draw on their backgrounds in rock\, folk\, electronica and classical music to create a unique sound frequently compared to early Pink Floyd\, Portishead and Kate Bush as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. \nDescribed as an ”Avant garde musical utopia”\, they perform in their ‘musical space station’ of instruments including guitar\, bass\, percussion\, mandola\, piano\, organ\, omnichord and vintage synthesisers. After over 1000 concerts and now 7 albums\, they’ve played everywhere from Southampton to Sydney including London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall while piling up achievements from a nomination for the Progressive Music Limelight Award\, Best British Duo\, #4 Best New British Band\, and #10 Most Important Rock Event of 2020. \nMore recently their universally applauded 2022 album Hotel Utopia went straight into the UK Rock Chart at #13\, single If You Tolerate This made #22 in the iTunes chart and Chrissy Mostyn was voted #5 World Female Vocalist in Prog Magazine’s Readers’ Poll. \n“Epic” – Uncut \n“Ethereal” – Sunday Express \n“A life-enhancing listening experience” – Louder Than War \n“Reaches areas of your head and heart you never knew existed” – Metal Planet Music \nIf any further recommendations are necessary\, both SoundCellar’s John and the more recently ‘converted’ Chris\, believe it’s time word got out in this part of the country about The Blackheart Orchestra. Their SoundCellar gig scheduled in late 2022\, fell foul of an unfortunate injury for one of the band\, but all is now well\, so we are extremely pleased to present them live at The Grasshopper\, as part of their 2023 UK tour to promote the new album. \nLatest addition: Support act Foxpalmer has been announced for the tour and will open the evening at 7:30pm prompt \nFoxpalmer aka Fern McNulty is a London-based singer-songwriter. SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: DUSKI
DESCRIPTION:DUSKI made their SoundCellar debut in 2018 and we felt it was time to have them back again – this time they come to us as a quartet. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nThe band began as a chordless trio in darkest Wales comprising of sax\, double bass and drums. Piano was added and slowly the jazz styles disappeared\, while heavy jams and collective improvising took its place. The piano morphed into different synthesisers and tape loops and the double bass cracked open to reveal its electric counterpart. Standard chord progression melted away to reveal the dark minimalist progressive rock band that is Duski. \n “A contemporary group playing fresh\, original music that deserves to be seen and heard” – The Jazz Mann \nDuski toured the UK three times to promote their eponymous debut album. During this process\, the band started developing new music that ended up dominating the set: a new album was on the horizon. The band entered Giant Wafer Studio in September 2018 and took three days to craft the album ‘Make a Wish’. Traditional form of melody and then lots of soloing took a sideline\, replaced by group improvisations based more on image and texture. Most of the album was recorded live in a few takes along with overdubbing. \n“Duski’s set shows originality\, quality and productive collaboration” – Nigel Jarrett\, Jazz Journal \n“‘Make A Wish’ is a world class album that should propel Duski to the forefront of the UK Jazz scene” – Francis Brown\, New Sounds Wales \nDuski’s sound evolved again throughout 2020’s lockdown\, the result of which is their most recent release 2021’s “Pillow Talk Sessions 1” on Ropeadope.  Conversations between tenor saxophone & double bass entwine; drawing out delicate notes that allow space for reflection with brooding overtones of tension ever-present. Aidan Thorne struts along the double bass\, bowing earthly drones for Greg Sterland’s searching tenor saxophone reminiscent of the considered European jazz leanings of early Portico Quartet. Another welcome addition to the impressive British jazz scene. \nThis SoundCellar gig will feature an eclectic mix of ‘Pillow Talk’ improvisations\, along with ‘Make A Wish’ group material – an evening not to be missed! \nAidan Thorne: Bass\nGreg Sterland: Saxes\nPaul Jones: Keyboards\nMatt Holmes: Drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: MARK LOCKHEART'S 'DREAMERS'
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to present MARK LOCKHEART for his SoundCellar debut\, when Mark brings his fabulous band ‘Dreamers’ here to Poole. This new all star group explores Mark’s multi-faceted outlook on music\, through a new set of original compositions that can be heard on their 2022 album ‘Dreamers’. Urgent and exciting grooves and textures all cleverly crafted together within Lockheart’s unique and memorable melodies. Wide ranging influences from Ellington and Shorter to John Zorn\, the Beatles and even Kraftwerk! \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nMark Lockheart has been at the forefront of contemporary music since he first came to prominence with Loose Tubes in the mid-1980s. Since then he has become a ‘go to’ for many of today’s top artists\, across many genres\, not least as a member of Polar Bear\, as a featured soloist for acclaimed composer Mark Anthony Turnage\, as a member of The Printmakers and providing wonderful colour to recent albums by Slowly Rolling Camera (one of SoundCellar John’s absolute favourites). \nMark has released many albums under his own name\, ranging from large orchestral works (e.g. 2019’s ‘Days On Earth’ is another of John’s favourites)\, to smaller ensembles and duos such as his 2019 ‘renaissance’ album ‘Salvator Mundi’ with organist Roger Mayer and his work with pianist Huw Warren. \n“From Loose Tubes to Polar Bear and beyond\, Lockheart’s capacity to be ahead of the jazz curve is undeniable. In this new band his combination of lyrical economy and harmonic creativity has found three improvisatory soulmates who clearly know how to make the most of his compositions in their own terms” Jazzwise magazine \nMark’s new ensemble Dreamers includes a long overdue return to SoundCellar of Elliot Galvin on keys\, along with Tom Herbert on bass and an even longer overdue return of Dave Smith on drums. Elliot is well known to jazz enthusiasts as a member of Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur\, for his work with Marius Neset and Binker Golding\, and for his own fine albums. Tom is probably best known as an original member of Acoustic Ladyland\, as well as Mercury Music Prize nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible. Dave has played with many top artists\, such as Donny McCaslin\, Eddie Henderson\, Iain Ballamy and Seth Lakeman. He was also a member of Cloudmaker’s Trio (who played SoundCellar in 2012) and he toured the world as a member of Robert Plant’s band for 6 years. \n“Built from the past\, but creating vivid potentials for the future\, Dreamers is the stuff all good jazz is made of” Jazzwise **** \n“The sound of surprise is still with us” BBC Music Magazine **** \n“State of the art jazz from a master who refuses to stand still and once again sets the bar very high as he journeys on and ever deeper” Marlbank **** \nMark Lockheart – saxophones\nElliot Galvin – keyboards\nTom Herbert – bass guitar\nDave Smith – drums \nPhotograph by Joel Baxter \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month \nShare this event

SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: JO LAWRY'S ACROBATS TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Australian vocalist Jo Lawry brings her Acrobats Trio to SoundCellar\, in a special Friday evening performance at The Grasshopper. \nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig.\nLivestream Ticket link below \nAustralian vocalist Jo Lawry has forged an impressive solo career with a global fan base\, while learning deep respect as a ‘musician’s singer’ within and beyond jazz circles. She’s also spent nearly a decade performing and recording with Sting and has worked with Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. The two albums she released as a singer/songwriter/producer\, Taking Pictures (2015) and The Bathtub and the Sea (2017) garnered critical acclaim. Now\, more than 10 years since her last solo jazz album\, Lawry presents her new live project and chordless band Acrobats Trio\, and album of the same name (Whirlwind Recordings\, FEB 2023)\, unequivocally returning to the genre alongside globally in-demand bassist Orlando le Fleming and versatile drummer Allison Miller (Linda May Han Oh features on double bass on the album). \nOrlando le Fleming is among the most proficient and accomplished bassists in the field of contemporary jazz. His virtuoso technique\, boundless creativity and powerful beat are those of a musician who has found himself\, humbly\, occupying a space in the uppermost stratum of American improvised music. \nOriginally from the UK\, Le Fleming’s 2003 move to New York City was a timely one. Soon after arriving stateside\, Orlando joined Jane Monheit’s band\, consequently sharing the bass duties on her 2004 release Taking a Chance on Love with Ron Carter and Christian McBride; the year following\, he recorded with jazz legend Jimmy Cobb. In the years since\, leaders as diverse as Branford Marsalis\, Joey Calderazzo\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Bill Charlap\, Billy Cobham\, Seamus Blake\, Wayne Krantz\, and David Sanchez have relied on Le Fleming’s firm beat and eloquent counterpoint to propel their rhythm sections forward. While he succeeds as a sideman\, Orlando has released several albums as a leader and co leader working alongside musicians such as Will Vinson\, Lage Lund\, Antonio Sanchez\, Kurt Elling\, Mark Turner and Jeff “Tain” Watts. \nAllison Miller is a NYC-based drummer/composer/teacher who engages her deep roots in improvisation as a vehicle to explore all music. Described by critics as a Modern Jazz Icon in the Making\, Miller won Downbeat magazine’s 67th Annual Critics Poll “Rising Star Drummer” and JazzTimes magazine’s Critics Poll. Her composition\, “Otis Was a Polar Bear”\, is included on NPR’s list of The 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women+. She is also the first recipient of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s Commissioning Grant. In January 2020 Miller along with her band\, Boom Tic Boom\, tap dancer-Claudia Rahardjanoto\, and video designer-Todd Winkler premiered this new multimedia suite\, In Our Veins\, with a seven show tour sponsored by Jazz Touring Network and Mid Atlantic Arts. Miller\, a three time Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department\, was Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2019 Artist in Residence\, alongside bassist/producer Derrick Hodge. She is also a proud member of the critically acclaimed BlueNote recording supergroup Artemis. \nAs a side-musician\, Miller has been the rhythmic force behind such artists as Sara Bareilles\, Ani DiFranco\, Natalie Merchant\, Brandi Carlile\, Toshi Reagon\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Patricia Barber\, Marty Ehrlich\, Ben Allison\, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. \nJo Lawry – voice\nOrlando le Fleming – double bass\nAllison Miller – drums \nThe livestream will be broadcast on YouTube\, via a page available when you purchase a ticket through the link below. \nAll advance ticket buyers will receive an exclusive link to a video of the evening’s performance\, available for one month. \nShare this event
