SUMMARY:Philip Clouts Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Having played SoundCellar in 2011\, as well as being one of our successful lockdown In Our Own Space artists last year\, we welcome back PHILIP CLOUTS and his Quartet\, bringing us melodic jazz with inspirations from around the world. \nTicket link below \nPlease note the venue is upstairs at THE AVOCET (formerly The Cow – next to Parkstone Railway Station) \nCape Town-born pianist/composer Clouts’ South African roots have inspired a voyage of discovery that has led to him soaking up the joyful passion of Caribbean calypso\, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs\, the exuberant sway of Cuban dance music and the tuneful essence of Gospel while honouring jazz heroes including Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett\, and Charles Lloyd. \nAs a key member of the popular London-based world jazz ensemble Zubop and its offshoot ZubopGambia\, with BBC World Music award-winner Juldeh Camara\, Clouts created a solid body of work with African roots and since moving to Dorset in 2006 he has responded to his new surroundings with impressionistic compositions that complement his world music interests\, resonating with strong themes and packing a mighty rhythmical punch. \nThe latest CD from the Philip Clouts Quartet is one of the first wave of releases on the new jazz imprint from prestigious label Odradek Records. On this album\, entitled Umoya (named from the Zulu word for life force)\, Clouts’ African inspirations extend beyond Cape jazz to Gnawa music and Afrobeat\, and further to pan-European folksong and soul-jazz. \nJoined by other previous SoundCellar performers rising star saxophonist Samuel Eagles\, bassist Tim Fairhall and drummer Ted Carrasco\, he brings his musical journey alive with superb musicianship and infectious vigour. \n“The best of British jazz” Chris Phillips Jazz FM “Precise ebullience and relaxed funkiness” The Guardian \n“Clouts’ compositions are strong and likeable. The quartet’s playing is similarly engaging\, a feeling of optimism pervading the tunes with a life force of its own” All About Jazz \nEntry is £13 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £15 cash on the door \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this event

SUMMARY:Al Swainger’s Pointless Beauty
DESCRIPTION:POINTLESS BEAUTY is the ongoing passion project of bassist\, digital artist\, composer and producer Al Swainger. \nTicket link below \nPlease note the venue is upstairs at THE AVOCET (formerly The Cow – next to Parkstone Railway Station) \nGrowing up Al learned to play a variety of instruments (bass\, piano\, french horn\, guitar)\, program computer sequencers\, synths & fx pedals and developed a very wide taste in listening. As inspired by Weather Report as Iron Maiden\, Pink Floyd\, Radiohead or Chick Corea\, it’s no surprise that Al’s authentic voice comes from some very eclectic places when it comes to expressing himself as performer and composer. \nIn the spirit of curating an ever evolving narrative experience\, the project has no fixed membership. Drawing on players appropriate to the situation from recording to recording and gig to gig\, keeps the output fresh and joyfully eclectic. \nJon Clark has been a regular collaborator since 2016\, appearing on the Biophosmos : Music of Chick Corea album and upcoming Pointless Beauty – Hearts Full of Grace. He previously studied percussion in Cuba\, also in India (with Shakti percussionist Neyveli Venkadesh) and at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica\, Salamanca. He led ‘The Odd Little Group’ (a free improvised sax trio) and performed with ‘Dirty Pie’ (an ad lib hip hop ensemble)\, as well as working with the London Improvisers Orchestra\, BeiBei Wang\, Cleveland Watkiss and Orphy Robinson. \nSaxophonist Jon Lloyd has played on the UK jazz and improvised music scene for over 30 years\, working with the likes of John Law\, Asaf Sirkis\, Paul Clarvis\, Stan Adler\, Michel Pilz and Gerry Hemingway. Jon has released numerous critically acclaimed albums as a leader. \n“Ambitious and virtuosic…Jon Lloyd is one of the most strikingwriters at the sharp end of British jazz and improvisation” John Fordham\, The Guardian \nGuitarist Rob Palmer has worked with saxophonist Theo Travis\, pianist John Law\, vibes player Roger Beaujolais\, USA vocalist Lila Ammons and is a member of the ambient/groove/electronica trio Echo Engine. \nEntry is £13 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £15 cash on the door \n   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this event

SUMMARY:NCW4 ft. Ivo Neame
DESCRIPTION:NICK COSTLEY-WHITE is one of the most in-demand guitarists on the UK jazz scene\, renowned for a deep understanding of the jazz tradition and repertoire\, alongside a virtuosic technique and progressive approach to improvising. Nick first brought his band to SoundCellar in 2018\, as well as performing (with Brandon Allen) in one of our very successful ‘In Our Own Space’ livestreams during lockdown in 2020. He is now bringing a stellar band for our delectation – the NCW 4 featuring Ivo Neame. \nTicket link below \nNick has performed with some of the most renowned jazz musicians in the country\, including Martin Speake\, Stan Sulzmann\, Gareth Lockrane\, Steve Fishwick\, Jeff Williams\, Julian Siegel\, Ross Stanley\, Emma Rawicz\, Sam Leak\, Helena Kay and Asaf Sirkis.  Nick performs extensively throughout the UK as well as touring in Europe\, Australia\, China and South America. \nNick’s debut album “Detour Ahead” was released in July 2018 to critical acclaim \n“A masterclass in the under appreciated art of playing beautiful\, laid back swing” Jazzwise \nNick has also contributed to over a dozen studio albums as a sideman with a variety of jazz groups including the highly acclaimed Snowpoet.  Upon graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011\, Nick was awarded the Yamaha Scholarship for Outstanding Jazz Musicians. \nIVO NEAME hardly needs an introduction to SoundCellar regulars\, having played for us on a number of occasions\, plus playing one of our ‘In Our Own Space’ livestreams in 2020 (with Ant Law). \nIvo is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist\, composer and arranger. In addition to leading his own bands\, he is a vital cog in several of European jazz’s most forward-looking groups including Phronesis and the Marius Neset Quintet. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and is now an Associate of that revered body. Since completing his studies there in 2003\, he has performed and recorded with highly esteemed musicians at home and abroad such as David Binney\, Kenny Wheeler and Hermeto Pascoal. He has also played on more than 50 albums as a sideman and a leader. \nIvo has a whole host of awards and honours to his name\, a snapshot of which include: \nUK Jazz Instrumentalist of the year 2012 (nominated) – Jazz FM Awards \nJazz Ensemble of the year 2017 – Parliamentary Jazz Awards (Phronesis) \nJazz Composition for Small Ensemble 2018 (nominated) – BASCA Composer Awards \nIn addition to being an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music\, Ivo is also an Associate Member of PRS and a Professor in Jazz Piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. \nCompleting the Quartet are yet more of the very best musicians working in the jazz world today.  One of SoundCellar’s absolute favourite bass players CONOR CHAPLIN\, is simply the most in-demand bassist around and the final superstar in the band is percussionist / drummer (and erstwhile top vibes player) LEWIS WRIGHT. \nThis really is a band you shouldn’t miss the chance to see here in Poole. \nThis gig will be held at The Avocet (formerly The Cow)\, next to Parkstone Railway Station. Please note the 20:00 (8 pm) start time for the forseeable future \nEntry is £13 + booking fee in advance through the below link\, or £15 cash on the doorShare this event

\nClick here for tickets to come to the physical gig\nLivestream Ticket link below \nNick has performed with some of the most renowned jazz musicians in the country\, including Martin Speake\, Stan Sulzmann\, Gareth Lockrane\, Steve Fishwick\, Jeff Williams\, Julian Siegel\, Ross Stanley\, Emma Rawicz\, Sam Leak\, Helena Kay and Asaf Sirkis. \nTickets for the Livestream are £6 + booking fee in advance through the below link.Share this event

SUMMARY:THE MARCO MARCONI TRIO feat. Max Ionata + pre gig workshop
DESCRIPTION:SoundCellar welcomes the return of acclaimed Italian pianist MARCO MARCONI with his trio plus special guest (for an Arts Council funded UK tour): multi-Award winning Italian saxophonist MAX IONATA. The group also features TOM FARMER on bass and Emiliano Caroselli on drums. \nTicket holders are also welcome to attend a 30 min workshop (7.15-7.45pm) before the concert where Marco and Max will give an insight into their music and playing style. \nTicket link below \nA native Italian from Umbria\, Marco Marconi initially studied classical piano before moving on to study Jazz at the Music Conservatory of Perugia. After establishing himself as one of Italy’s leading jazz pianists\, his subsequent highly successful appearances at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in 2009 and the Lancaster Music Festival in 2011 prompted his decision to move to the UK permanently in 2012. Working primarily with his own trio\, Marco was signed to the iconic UK label 33Jazz\, which released his first two albums “Nordik” (2016) and its follow up “Trialogue” (2018)\, both to critical acclaim. For his last record ‘New Roads’ Marco invited one of Italy’s best-known saxophonists the multi-Award winning Max Ionata (Robin Eubanks\, Steve Grossman\, Mike Stern\, Bob Mintzer\, Mario Biondi…) to collaborate with him. In Marco’s words this resulted in “a big injection of swing” into both the album’s original compositions as well as the standards and popular songs rearranged in a jazz style which also feature on the CD. Successfully combining Marco’s classical background\, jazz sensibilities and truly impressive technique\, this may be his most exciting album yet. \nTom Farmer is a busy member of the British music scene\, primarily with award winning quartet\, Empirical\, but also in many other projects.  Graduating from Guildhall\, Tom joined Empirical in 2007\, touring intensively and winning many awards including Best Ensemble Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2016.  Away from Empirical\, Tom has led masterclasses and seminars at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama\, Leeds College of Music\, RWCD and is an occasional teacher for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has performed with many of today’s British jazz musicians and is currently touring Anoushka Shankar\, Joe Stilgoe\, Ivo Neame and many others. \nAfter collaborating with many musicians on the Italian jazz scene and after years of experience as a sideman\, Emiliano Caroselli moved to London in 2012. He played with several bands in various styles of music. His sensitive passionate approach to the drums soon made him an important figure on the London jazz scene. His receptiveness to all styles of music\, combined with a deep knowledge of the roots of jazz\, the richness of his dynamics and his attention to interplay with other musicians make him one of the most in-demand drummers and percussionists in London today. \nThis gig will be held at The Avocet (formerly The Cow)\, next to Parkstone Railway Station. SUMMARY:ALICE ZAWADZKI with Rob Luft & Misha Mullov-Abbado
DESCRIPTION:We have an extra special evening lined up\, even by our extremely high standards\, when we welcome the magnificent ALICE ZAWADZKI\, accompanied by the fantastic Rob Luft and Misha Mullov-Abbado. Originally scheduled for May 2020\, this was an event we were particularly disappointed about losing\, when it fell foul of lockdown. It’s taken nearly two years (although Alice and Rob did give us one of our first and finest ‘In Our Own Space’ livestream performances in June 2020)\, so we’re delighted to host them at last. \nThis gig is now SOLD OUT! Tickets for the livestream are still available here \nNot only is Alice an extremely talented violinist and pianist with a famously exquisite voice\, but as John in the SoundCellar team will tell anyone within earshot\, she is also an outstanding songwriter\, as those of you lucky enough to attend this evening’s event (whether for real or via the livestream) will experience first hand. \nLoosely connected to the jazz world but realistically inhabiting her own realm\, Alice is a distinctive presence within the European creative music scene and beyond. SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM - ALICE ZAWADZKI with Rob Luft & Misha Mullov-Abbado
\nClick here for tickets to attend the physical gig\nLivestream Ticket link below \nNot only is Alice an extremely talented violinist and pianist with a famously exquisite voice\, but as John in the SoundCellar team will tell anyone within earshot\, she is also an outstanding songwriter\, as those of you lucky enough to attend this evening’s event (whether for real or via the livestream) will experience first hand. \nLoosely connected to the jazz world but realistically inhabiting her own realm\, Alice is a distinctive presence within the European creative music scene and beyond. Her rich musical background and “whimsical hyper-creativity” (MOJO Magazine) draw upon her early exposure to New Orleans jazz and gospel\, an extensive classical training as a violinist\, and a continuous exploration of improvisation\, poetry\, and folk music from diverse traditions\, “all propelled in a voice of velvet suppleness and gutsy emotional power” (The Arts Desk). \nHer 2019 release\, ‘Within You Is A World Of Spring’ (Whirlwind Recordings) was met internationally with warm critical praise\, being made Contemporary Album of the Month by The Guardian newspaper\, and described by Jazzwise Magazine as “Tender in spirit and defiantly anti-genre… A cornucopia of delights.” ★★★★ \nHer debut album ‘China Lane’ was made Album of the Week by BBC Radio 3\, she was described by The Guardian as “a genuine original” and she was nominated for vocalist of the year by both Jazz FM and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.  As an interpreter of new and unusual works\, she has premiered several large-scale works both in the UK and internationally. SUMMARY:HARRY CHRISTELIS & PEDRO VELASCO
DESCRIPTION:The forward thinking guitar duo of Harry Christelis & Pedro Velasco make their SoundCellar debut as part of a national tour to promote their debut release ‘Scribbling’ (Ubuntu Music). \nPlease note this gig will be a ‘house concert’ and is now SOLD OUT.\n \nHarry Christelis and Pedro Velasco form a guitar duo that explores and challenges the boundaries of improvised music. Theirs is a melting pot of jazz and folk harmony\, immersive sonic textures\, and calm\, introspective moments that are interjected with wild intensity. In a world that rushes to excite and distract\, their music focuses on taking time to develop and create space. This often-understated approach puts just as much emphasis on the notes that are not played\, as the ones that are. \nThe partnership was born in 2016\, when the two London-based guitarists came together for a concert and discovered a like-minded approach to music. Their musical connection has developed with each meeting since. They share a respect of jazz traditions but also a love of expanding these to incorporate elements from folk and electronic music\, as well as ambient styles and free improvisation. Together\, they’ve built a unique\, intimate setup and found a way of conversing that’s equally unassuming and thought-provoking. \nThey recorded their first album\, ‘Scribbling’\, in December 2020. The result is a truly distinct album that challenges the ideas of what a guitar duo should sound like. Some tracks might transport you to a sound world that feels like it belongs in outer space\, others as if you’re immersed in the depths of the ocean. It is\, however\, a beautifully balanced piece of work that keeps its feet firmly rooted in traditions of the instruments and the music they are playing. \n£15 on the door (cash or card).Share this event
