SUMMARY:REBECCA NASH (piano) and NICK WALTERS (trumpet\, electronics)
DESCRIPTION:We have another high quality duo for our In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation series\, when we present REBECCA NASH (piano) and NICK WALTERS (trumpet\, electronics). Rebecca has played twice previously at SoundCellar in other ensembles and now brings us her own first rate material\, along with some of Nick’s fabulous compositions\, to this evening’s performance. \nTicket link at bottom of page \nNick and Rebecca have a long working history which reaches back over the last ten years. \nNick played a key role in the title track for Rebecca’s album\, Peaceful King (released 2019)\, masterminding the electronic elements of that music\, and in turn Rebecca plays piano for Nick’s bands The Paradox Ensemble and The Nick Walters Quintet. The pair have developed a symbiotic musical relationship built around friendship and a musical respect\, combining forces to create a dynamic new sound world. \nBetween the two of them\, they have in recent years notched up several critically acclaimed releases on major British jazz labels including Whirlwind Recordings\, 22a Records\, and EFPI Records. Earlier this year\, Nick established his own label\, D.O.T. Records – a strong new force on the jazz scene. \nThey are looking forward to bringing their new collaboration to SoundCellar\, where they will perform their Jazz South Radar Commission\, The Sanctuary\, which explores the concept of ley-lines and their effect on the natural world around them. The pair will also be playing some stripped-back material from Implicate Order\, Nick’s newly released Paradox Ensemble album\, as well as music from Peaceful King\, and an earlier Paradox album The Awakening. \n“Nash\, and her superb band are at the vanguard of innovative and compelling new music.” (Downbeat Magazine) \n“The clarity of the creative voice unifies the music and marks her out as one to watch both as a composer and musician”  JAZZWISE ★★★★ \n “Amazing new album\, so good – another chapter to add to the phenomenal new British Jazz scene” GILLES PETERSON \n“Walters is majestic\, leading a hugely enjoyable cosmic journey of exciting\, melodic and spiritually uplifting contemporary jazz” UK VIBE \n  \nMake sure you join us for SoundCellar Presents: In Our Own Space: Music and Conversation with REBECCA NASH and NICK WALTERS \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. This will provide those who join us on the night with the opportunity to relive the whole event and also give those who cannot make it on the night\, the chance to watch it all later. A link to the video will be emailed around 2-3 days after the performance. \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:Once again we have an extraordinary musician giving us a very rare solo performance for another of our special Sunday editions of In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation.  We are very excited to present the exceptional guitarist STEVE CARDENAS direct from his home in New York. \nTicket link at bottom of page \nSteve began his musical career in Kansas City and has been an integral part of the New York City jazz community since 1995. Steve has performed and recorded with many well-known and highly esteemed musicians. \nNotably\, he was a longstanding member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band\, Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra and Steve Swallow Quintet. He has also performed regularly with such diverse artists as Norah Jones\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Eliane Elias and has toured extensively performing at countless international music festivals\, theatres and clubs. \nAs well as appearing as a sideman on over one hundred recordings\, Steve has six recordings as a leader\, accompanied by such jazz luminaries as Thomas Morgan\, Kenny Wollesen\, Rudy Royston\, Tony Malaby and Larry Grenadier.  His latest release ‘Blue Has A Range’ (Sunnyside\, 2020) features an all-star line-up of Ben Allison\, Jon Cowherd and Brian Blade. \nAdditionally\, Steve is on faculty at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary in New York and most recently has joined the Sonora Guitar Intensive team as a mentor. Steve is also co-author with editor Don Sickler of the Thelonious Monk Fakebook. \nOnce again we are delighted to be partnering with our friends at London Jazz Guitar Society\, who will be holding an online Guitar Masterclass with Steve the week before\, where he will pass on some of his unparalleled wisdom\, before he then performs for us live\, followed by a Q&A session. \nDo not miss out on seeing one of the best musicians in the world performing solo for us on Sunday 21st March\, when we present In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation with STEVE CARDENAS \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. SUMMARY:NOEMI NUTI (voice) and ANDREW McCORMACK (piano)
DESCRIPTION:Having first played at SoundCellar with her band in 2015\, we are delighted to be able to welcome the wonderful vocalist NOEMI NUTI back to perform for our In Our Own Space: Music & Conversation series\, in a duo with acclaimed pianist ANDREW McCORMACK. \nTicket link at bottom of page \nBorn and raised in New York from Italian descent\, Noemi Nuti is a jazz vocalist and composer residing in London. She studied classical harp at Brunel University and jazz improvisation at Trinity College of Music\, graduating with an MA in Jazz Performance in 2012. \nNoemi has been active since 2008 starting with joining the Tomorrow’s Warriors ‘Jazz Alive’ project\, has performed with NYJO\, the London Vocal Project and was lead singer for samba band Rhythms of the City. In 2015\, she released her debut album ‘Nice to Meet You’ and received wide critical acclaim and extensive airplay\, including being A listed on Jazz FM. \nIn 2017\, she paid tribute to Milton Nascimento’s music at Pizza Express Jazz Club creating an all-Brazilian rhythm section and joining forces with pianist sensation Liam Noble and saxophonist Jean Toussaint (Art Blakey). After touring her debut album\, supporting Marcos Valle and headlining Ipswich Jazz Festival\, she joined Andrew McCormack’s Graviton in 2018-2019\, touring in the UK and internationally. \nShe has recently released her second album ‘Venus Eye’ in March 2020 to wide critical acclaim and has been selected for Serious’ Take Five artist development scheme. \n“…a lot of joy\, and a range of many emotions\, shining through this very accomplished new release.” (Jazz Journal) \n“…it’s good to hear an original voice that has something to say” (Bebop Spoken Here) \nNoemi has performed in many important venues including\, Ronnie Scott’s\, Islington Assembly Hall\, 606 Jazz Club (and SoundCellar of course) in the UK and further afield in the U.S.A.\, Europe and Brazil. She is regular performer at the London Jazz Festival. \nAndrew McCormack is an acclaimed musician in his own right. In addition to receiving high praise for his first two albums ‘Telescope’ and ‘First Light’ and for his band Graviton (including Noemi)\, Andrew’s latest release in 2020 ‘Solo’ has been widely praised across the board: \n“(..piano)…which McCormack uses to perform a wide-ranging repertoire of engaging and beautifully-played music” (All About Jazz) \n“This really is a very fine achievement. I’m now very impatient to hear McCormack in concert again; meanwhile\, Solo is a disc to treasure” (Jazz Journal) \n“Andrew McCormack: ‘Solo’ review – prepare to be seduced” (The Guardian) \nWe are sure you won’t want to miss this special duo performance for In Our Own Space: Music and Conversation with NOEMI NUTI and ANDREW McCORMACK \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. This will provide those who join us on the night with the opportunity to relive the whole event and also give those who cannot make it on the night\, the chance to watch it all later. SUMMARY:RICK SIMPSON (piano)
DESCRIPTION:Having played at SoundCellar with other ensembles\, we are really pleased to now be able to present RICK SIMPSON ‘solo’ as one of our In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation artists\, not least because he will be bringing a taste of Radiohead with him (as explained below!) \nTicket link at bottom of page \nRick is based in London playing a wide variety of music\, and leads his own group playing original jazz music. He is a regular performer at Ronnie Scotts\, the 606 Jazz Club\, Pizza Express Dean Street\, The Vortex\, The Bull’s Head\, and has appeared at larger UK venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and the Purcell Room. \nIn 2008 Rick won a Yamaha Scholarship Prize for Outstanding Jazz Musicians. A recording of Rick’s band was put on the front cover of Jazzwise Magazine. \nSince graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2008 he has performed with musicians such as Christian Scott\, Eric Harland\, Joe Sanders\, Ernesto Simpson\, Earl Burness Travis\, Stan Sulzmann and with SoundCellar favourites Michael Janisch\, Martin Speake\, Jeff Williams\, Kristian Borring\, Leo Richardson and Andre Canniere. In addition\, Rick plays in the ensembles of Jay Phelps\, Rory Simmons\, Alice Leggett and Riley Stone-Lonergan\, amongst others. \nRick also teaches on the prestigious MEhr Clef courses alongside Stan Sulzmann\, Steve Waterman\, Alan Barnes\, Malcolm Edmonstone\, Mark Hodgson\, Lee Gibson\, Ursula Malewski and Martin France. \nHaving released two previous albums as leader involving many of SoundCellar’s most popular musicians (pretty much every one of them having played at the cellar at some point)\, in October 2020\, Rick released another album involving Soundcellar ‘stars’\, that has taken the jazz world by storm! Released on the 20th Anniversary of the release of Radiohead’s genre-busting album ‘Kid A’\, Rick presented Everything All Of The Time: Kid A Revisited on our favourite record label\, Whirlwind Records. \nThe album is described as a typically idiosyncratic project: a re-framing of Radiohead’s Kid A album\, featuring ten original arrangements of the source material played by an all-star band of like-minded musical mavericks. \nThe project was created to mark the 20th anniversary of the original album’s release\, as part of a series of sell-out shows curated by Simpson at London’s Vortex club featuring non-jazz records rearranged with an improvisational focus. The original show was such a success\, drawing in listeners from beyond the club’s regular audience\, that Simpson re-assembled the band in the studio and recorded the entire album in a single afternoon session “I think the time pressure contributed to the performances. It’s really punchy and to the point\, but a lot happens – it captures the energy so well”. There’s a wealth of detail to discover\, and surprises at every turn. \nHere are just some of the press accolades: \n“Simpson’s energy on this recording is infectious… The arrangements are terrific\, with the two frontline saxes bringing a welcome edge to the session.” ★★★★ UK Vibe \n“A brilliant mix of focussed energy and wild imagination.” ★★★★ Jazzwise Magazine \n“Simpson and his band produce not simply a heartfelt homage but a genuinely stirring set of tunes in their own right.” Jazz Views \nRick will be playing many of the tunes from the album for us\, so it really goes without saying that you don’t want to miss In Our Own Space: Music and Conversation with RICK SIMPSON \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. This will provide those who join us on the night with the opportunity to relive the whole event and also give those who cannot make it on the night\, the chance to watch it all later. A link to the video will be emailed to you around 2-3 days after the performance. \nShare this event

DESCRIPTION:We are really pleased to be kicking off 2021 with one of SoundCellar’s favourite musicians\, ROGER BEAUJOLAIS. Roger has performed for us on a number of occasions in the cellar and we are now looking forward to him playing for us in our In Our Own Space: Music and Conversation series. \nRoger is a self taught vibraphone player who started playing at the age of 24\, played his first gig at 28 and turned professional when he was 30. In the process\, he became the first vibraphone player in the UK to make a living from solely playing vibes. He was a founding member of the jump jive band The Chevalier Brothers & toured extensively throughout the 1980s playing in over 20 countries on 3 continents as well performing on many TV & radio shows. He played jazz festivals in Norway\, Finland\, France\, Belgium & Italy\, as well as prestigious appearances at the Stockholm\, the North Sea and the Montreux Jazz Festivals. The Chevalier Brothers played 200 gigs a year for a number of years\, even including at famous rock festivals like Glastonbury & Rosskilde in Denmark. \nWhen The Chevalier Brothers split up in 1988 Roger joined pop band Fairground Attraction & toured with them for most of 1989. They split in 1989 & Roger recorded his first album ‘Mind How You Go’\, a latin jazz album of mostly original tunes\, released under the name of the Beaujolais Band by Acid Jazz Records in 1990. A second album came out in 1993 & Roger also started making albums of original jazz funk compositions for Acid Jazz Records under the name of Vibraphonic. The second Vibraphonic album in 1995 included a track ‘Can’t Get Enough’ that became a number one on the jazz charts in the USA. As a result Roger & Vibraphonic signed to Hollywood Records in Los Angeles & released two more albums for them. Hollywood Records is the audio arm of Disney Productions. \nAfter more radio success in the USA\, Roger decided to play more acoustic music & formed his jazz quintet releasing 4 albums in the next 10 years\, also fitting in a quartet album with SoundCellar favourite Theo Travis & a trio album featuring the legendary pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole. Roger then released 2 quartet albums & most recently in 2019\, an album with his Italian Trio called ‘Barba Lunga’. \nRoger has recently released an ambient album of solo vibes called ‘Dreamscapes’. This album would probably never have been released if it wasn’t for lockdown. This is Roger’s 21st album release & he has now had over 200 of his compositions recorded. \nHe has also been a successful studio musician\, appearing on albums by Robert Plant\, Roni Size\, Morrissey\, Fairground Attraction\, Paul Weller\, Kirsty MacColl\, Alison Limerick\, Shola Ama\, Ed Motta\, Tony Allen\, Mary Coughlan\, Guy Chambers\, D Influence\, Black\, Neneh Cherry\, 4 Hero\, Corduroy\, Alexander O’Neal & many others. \nFor many years Roger was also a Professor of Music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance in London \nWith such a pedigree\, we think you’ll agree it’s essential you don’t miss In Our Own Space: Music and Conversation with ROGER BEAUJOLAIS \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. This will provide those who join us on the night with the opportunity to relive the whole event and also give those who cannot make it on the night\, the chance to watch it all later. \nShare this event

SUMMARY:ROBERT MITCHELL (piano)
DESCRIPTION:Over his nearly 30 years entrenched in the art of music\, Robert has released 10 albums of his own projects\, participated in over 100 projects as a sideman\, has performed in 40 countries and is achieving a growing reputation as an inspirational educator. \nThese days his primary focal points include his long-running ensemble Panacea\, his trio Epiphany 3 with special guest dancer Masumi Endo\, new electronic/song ensemble True Think\, plus solo performance (including a fascination with one-handed works\, which produced one solo album and festival – Leftitude – in 2013). He also continues to work with French saxophone great Julien Lourau\, brilliant US singer (and 2011 SoundCellar performer) Alicia Olatuja\, UK giant Courtney Pine CBE\, Cuban violinist legend Omar Puente\, multi instrumental master Orphy Robinson and in duos with cellist Shirley Smart and grammy winning Jason Rebello (another SoundCellar performer in 2011 and again earlier this year). He has recently recorded on albums/eps by Michael Olatuja\, Julien Lourau\, Courtney Pine CBE\, US sax firebrand James Brandon Lewis and in duo with Shirley Smart. Two new albums and a second book of poetry are on the way. \nHis latest album ‘The Rainbow Mountain/Can We Care’ is his 10th and first live solo album. This was recorded at the Jazz Cafe (London) in a performance sharing the bill with Vijay Iyer. A continuous improvisation – finished off with the song – hence the double title. A review from UKVibe stated: ‘‘The Rainbow Mountain / Can We Care’ is an intimate\, bold and thoroughly enjoyable listen and the perfect display of Robert Mitchell’s genius.” In 2014\, his first large scale work Invocation\, was successfully performed by the Grammy winning Bournemouth Symphony Chorus\, Goldsmith Big String and students from Avonbourne and Harewood schools\, at St Peters Church (Bournemouth) and the Queen Elizabeth Hall (London). \nIn 2019 Robert worked as MD on a BBC4 television tribute to the great 60s TV show – Jazz 625 Live: For One Night Only (performing with Joshua Redman and Jacqui Dankworth and featuring Gregory Porter). It won Best Music Programme at the 2020 Broadcast Awards. He was among the group of nominees for the 2020 Hamlyn Award for Composition\, who all then became recipients of the award due to the pandemic. \nRobert is set to complete commissions for London Sinfonietta and JazzSouth in 2020. Robert is proud to be a Steinway Artist since 2009. He is now a Jazz Piano Professor at Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He sits on three Ivors Academy Panels: Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee\, Jazz\, and Women In Music. \n“The astonishing Robert Mitchell\, familiar as the pianist and MD for the recent ‘BBC Four celebrates Jazz 625 For One Night Only’\, took the keyboard apart in every sense of the word. He uses both hands and sometimes cross-hands with equal force to build solos of unbelievable depth and complexity. Urged on by his fellow players and the awe-struck audience\, his playing became ever more audacious as the evening progressed.” thejazzmann.com \nHaving performed at SoundCellar with his groups Panacea in 2013 and Epiphany 3 in 2018\, in addition to the 2014 world premiere of Invocation at St Peter’s Church described above\, we are extremely pleased to be able to continue our strong local connections with Robert\, by presenting him as one of our In Our Own Space: Music and Conversation artists \nAll tickets purchased will also allow exclusive access to a video recording of the performance for one month afterwards. This will provide those who join us on the night with the opportunity to relive the whole event and also give those who cannot make it on the night\, the chance to watch it all later. \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite. \nShare this event

His most recent CD called Circles and Lines (2014 Urban Flower Records) features his guitar/piano/bass trio performing his intricate and fresh arrangements of standards by the Jazz and American Songbook Composers. \nPeter is an in-demand travelling guest artist and clinician who has been invited to appear at Universities and Music colleges all over the USA. He was due to play in the UK this autumn but those plans have been postponed of course. Instead for the time being\, Peter is running an online masterclass via the London Jazz Guitar Society on 23rd Aug\, followed by our special In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation performance on 27th Aug. \nJust Jazz Guitar magazine said about a recent Peter Mazza performance- \n“It’s one thing to perform compositions that go through time modulations\, meter changes\, and reharmonizations; but\, to do those things and make it seem effortless and of the highest musicality is a rarity…” \nJazz Inside magazine said about another recent Peter Mazza performance- \n“A guitarist with an instantly recognizable voice\, his original compositions are joyous whirlwinds of thematic expression\, rich with emotion and personality. Both vulnerable and commanding\, he puts it all on the line and goes for it\, the experience is thrilling…” \nNote: There is an additional 80p admin charge by EventbriteShare this event

Expect music from his solo albums – ‘Slow Life’ and ‘Open Air’\, ambient and experimental improvisations\, imaginative and radical rearrangements of pieces from Theo’s albums such as ‘Heart of the Sun’ and ‘Earth to Ether’\, a cover of a John Surman classic\, alto flute\, soprano sax\, tenor sax and possibly a surprise or two as well. \nTheo has released 10 acclaimed solo albums\, for which he composed\, arranged\, produced all the material and played saxophones and flute and he has played on over 130 albums in total. He has performed over 70 times at London’s Ronnie Scott’s club\, tours the UK regularly with his jazz quartet\, and has performed all over the world including Japan\, Norway\, Finland\, Sweden\, the USA\, France\, Italy\,  Belgium\, Switzerland\, Spain\,  Denmark\, Germany and Israel.  He has released recordings made live in New York\, Philadelphia\, Tokyo\, London\, Paris and Oslo. \nAs a sonic experimentalist\, he has developed his own system of ambitronics\, which utilises looping technology to create canvases of sound on flutes and saxes that are then woven into the music he makes. Such music\, performed on the alto flute\, was first released on Theo’s acclaimed album Slow Life\, which was credited as the inspiration behind the Jonathan Coe novel “The Rain before it Falls”. Theo has developed this technique and incorporated it into his work with Robert Fripp (5 CDs\, 3 download albums/ vinyl releases/ 3 tours)\, David Sylvian (Nine Horses CD and European tour)\, Soft Machine (4 albums\, many international festivals and tours 2006 to date)\, Gong (2 studio CDs\, 3 live albums\, 2 DVDs\, 3 world tours) and his unique solo performances. \nHe has also collaborated with other musicians including Harold Budd\, Roger Eno\, Palle Mikkelborg\, Anja Garbarek\, John Foxx\, Bill Nelson\, Keith Tippett\, Mick Karn\, Steven Wilson\, Hatfield and the North\, Jah Wobble\, John Etheridge and Lol Coxhill \nMOJO magazine referred to him as “a brave and restless talent to watch for”. \nSee www.theotravis.com \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite.Share this event

SUMMARY:JOHN LAW (piano)
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space is a performance by one of our most popular and frequent visitors to the cellar and indeed one of the first to play for us in our inaugural year 2010 – the acclaimed pianist John Law. For this special evening\, John is going to be giving us What The Wind Whispered\, an event he is dedicating to the memory of the great pianist and former mentor to many of today’s top musicians\, Keith Tippett\, who recently passed away on 14th June. \nHaving trained as a classical pianist\, John turned to contemporary music in his early twenties and has since gone on to record more than thirty albums of jazz\, classical and contemporary music. He has played with many stars from the world of contemporary improvised music such as Evan Parker\, Gwilym Simcock\, Andy Sheppard\, Jason Rebello and Tim Garland and has received many plaudits during his career e.g. “One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists” (International Piano Magazine 2014) and “One of this country’s most imaginative young pianists” (The Times) \nJohn has returned to SoundCellar with a number of different ensembles over the years and we are very pleased to have him play for us again as part of our In Our Own Space series. With a great new John Law’s Congregation album ‘Configuration’ (Ubuntu Music) recently released\, John will be performing from his own space this evening\, entertaining us with his creative\, melodic and acknowledged virtuoso piano playing. \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite.Share this event

SUMMARY:Sam Leak
DESCRIPTION:SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space \nThursday 4th June sees the start of a series of performances via the Zoom platform to bring some regular and some new SoundCellar artists direct to your ‘own space’. The schedule for Thursday will be 8.15pm start\, a one set performance followed by a Q&A session with the artist. \nThe series starts with pianist SAM LEAK. Sam performs contemporary jazz with a gospel-tinged\, and folk-inspired\, freedom and abandon. Conjuring up the joy and emotion typified by Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett\, he maintains a sense of the tradition whilst performing music that is very much rooted in the UK Jazz movement of the moment. Jazzwise magazine\, noting his “adventurous genre-crossing musical sensibility\, with a surprise at every turn and no source of inspiration off-limits\,” described his most recent live-streamed concert as an “artistic success” – do join us for this one. \nHis most recent album release “Adrift” recorded in duet with Lee Konitz/Ben Wendel pianist Dan Tepfer\, has been described as “compelling” and “reaching far beyond the jazz loop” by the Guardian’s John Fordham\, and “astonishing” by The Wire’s Marcus O’Dair. \n“Multi-faceted and smart as a pin\, this is poetic chamber jazz of a very high order” MOJO \n“the music is magical… constantly evolving and engaging…”\nThe New York City Jazz Record \n“This is assured and sophisticated acoustic jazz with deep roots in the tradition\, that knows exactly what it’s trying to do – and succeeds”\nDaniel Spicer\, BBC Music Magazine \n“The Royal Academy of Music’s jazz programme has produced a remarkable crop of newcomers in recent times: notably the Mercury-nominated pianists Gwilym Simcock and Kit Downes. Now comes Sam Leak\, an artist of comparable promise…Leak is a subtle storyteller who keeps the grooves and colours changing.”\nJohn Fordham\, The GuardianShare this event
