DESCRIPTION:In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation with ZOË GILBY and ANDY CHAMPION – Thurs 22nd Oct \nWe had Zoë Gilby booked to play with her band (including Andy Champion) at SoundCellar in 2019\, but for a number of reasons it didn’t happen\, so we are really pleased to now be able to bring them to you from their home in the North East of England\, as one of our In Our Own Space – Music and Conversation artists.\nWinner of Parliamentary Jazz Awards Jazz Vocalist of The Year 2019\, Zoë has teamed up with her husband\, the innovative and powerful double bassist Andy Champion for a voice and double bass duo. SUMMARY:JOHN LAW (piano)
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space is a performance by one of our most popular and frequent visitors to the cellar and indeed one of the first to play for us in our inaugural year 2010 – the acclaimed pianist John Law. For this special evening\, John is going to be giving us What The Wind Whispered\, an event he is dedicating to the memory of the great pianist and former mentor to many of today’s top musicians\, Keith Tippett\, who recently passed away on 14th June. \nHaving trained as a classical pianist\, John turned to contemporary music in his early twenties and has since gone on to record more than thirty albums of jazz\, classical and contemporary music. He has played with many stars from the world of contemporary improvised music such as Evan Parker\, Gwilym Simcock\, Andy Sheppard\, Jason Rebello and Tim Garland and has received many plaudits during his career e.g. “One of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile jazz pianists” (International Piano Magazine 2014) and “One of this country’s most imaginative young pianists” (The Times) \nJohn has returned to SoundCellar with a number of different ensembles over the years and we are very pleased to have him play for us again as part of our In Our Own Space series. With a great new John Law’s Congregation album ‘Configuration’ (Ubuntu Music) recently released\, John will be performing from his own space this evening\, entertaining us with his creative\, melodic and acknowledged virtuoso piano playing. \nNote: there is an additional 80p booking charge from Eventbrite.Share this event

SUMMARY:Sam Leak
DESCRIPTION:SoundCellar presents: In Our Own Space \nThursday 4th June sees the start of a series of performances via the Zoom platform to bring some regular and some new SoundCellar artists direct to your ‘own space’. The schedule for Thursday will be 8.15pm start\, a one set performance followed by a Q&A session with the artist. \nThe series starts with pianist SAM LEAK. Sam performs contemporary jazz with a gospel-tinged\, and folk-inspired\, freedom and abandon. Conjuring up the joy and emotion typified by Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett\, he maintains a sense of the tradition whilst performing music that is very much rooted in the UK Jazz movement of the moment. Jazzwise magazine\, noting his “adventurous genre-crossing musical sensibility\, with a surprise at every turn and no source of inspiration off-limits\,” described his most recent live-streamed concert as an “artistic success” – do join us for this one. \nHis most recent album release “Adrift” recorded in duet with Lee Konitz/Ben Wendel pianist Dan Tepfer\, has been described as “compelling” and “reaching far beyond the jazz loop” by the Guardian’s John Fordham\, and “astonishing” by The Wire’s Marcus O’Dair. \n“Multi-faceted and smart as a pin\, this is poetic chamber jazz of a very high order” MOJO \n“the music is magical… constantly evolving and engaging…”\nThe New York City Jazz Record \n“This is assured and sophisticated acoustic jazz with deep roots in the tradition\, that knows exactly what it’s trying to do – and succeeds”\nDaniel Spicer\, BBC Music Magazine \n“The Royal Academy of Music’s jazz programme has produced a remarkable crop of newcomers in recent times: notably the Mercury-nominated pianists Gwilym Simcock and Kit Downes. Now comes Sam Leak\, an artist of comparable promise…Leak is a subtle storyteller who keeps the grooves and colours changing.”\nJohn Fordham\, The GuardianShare this event
