SATORI

October 23 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

£17.50

Award winning saxophonist & composer Josephine Davies brings her dynamic quartet Satori to the Soundcellar to celebrate the launch of ‘Weatherwards’, their fourth album on Whirlwind Recordings. The music is inspired by Josephine’s Nordic roots in the Shetland Islands, and beautifully weaves together the band’s contemporary jazz background with a hauntingly evocative folk influence.

This gig will take place at The Grasshopper,
139 – 141 Bournemouth Rd, Poole BH14 9HT.

Please note: If parking in either of the car parks at The Grasshopper, you must register your vehicle on one of the dedicated terminals at the bar or in the function room.

As well as UK and European touring with Satori, Josephine Davies runs her own jazz orchestra, The Ensō Ensemble, which has just released its debut album ‘The Celtic Wheel of the Year Suite’ on Ubuntu Records. She is also a member of the Harper Trio, with recent performances at Patras Jazz Festival and the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, and Espial, a free jazz group with a fully improvised album out last year on Discus Records.

Pianist Alcyona Mick was recently nominated for the Parliamentary Award Jazz Musician of the year and has been performing internationally for many years with Arabic artist Natacha Atlas. A composer and bandleader in her own right, she writes for her band ‘Blink’ and her duo with saxophonist Tori Freestone, as well as the London Jazz Orchestra and various independent films.

Bassist Dave Whitford, winner of the Paul Hamlyn award, moved from Cornwall to London to attend Middlesex University, followed by a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As one of the UK’s most in demand side-men, he is currently engaged in projects with Christine Tobin, Claire Martin and Liam Noble, and has recorded with Bill Frisell, Steve Lacy, and the NDR Big Band in Germany.

Drummer Angus Bishop is another Middlesex University alumnus, known for his unique and dynamic blend of folk and free jazz influences. Also a composer, he plays and writes for the collaborative group, The Full Circle Quartet, and has just released a superb, poetry-inspired album ‘The Moon is made of Glass’ with the wonderfully dynamic trio Outside Broadcast (pianist Rowan Hudson and bassist Stuart Barker).
