Livestream – The Steve Banks Quintet

23 September 2021 @ 8:15 pm - 10:15 pm

We are making this gig available as a livestream over Zoom for those who are unable to come in person.

Guitarist Steve Banks plays SoundCellar for the first time and with his quintet presents his original compositions, encompassing deep contemporary grooves, Brazilian and swing influences, lush harmonies and memorable melodic hooks. The rich and dynamic musical landscapes created by the quintet are redolent of The Impossible Gentlemen, Maria Schneider, Fred Hersch and Bill Frisell, providing a showcase for Steve’s expressive, resonant and distinctive voice.

GREAT NEWS: All advance ticket buyers via the Eventbrite link for the physical gig or for the livestream (below), will get exclusive access to a video of the performance for one month.

Described in Jazzwise Magazine as evoking a “Metheny-esque lyricism”, Steve brings with him a quintet featuring musicians from the forefront of UK jazz, three of whom have graced our SoundCellar stage on one or more occasion in the past, including the welcome return of one of the undoubted stars of our lockdown ‘In Our Own Space’ sessions, Rebecca Nash!

This year, Steve will be releasing ‘Emboldened’, an Arts Council England supported suite of his original music alongside recording an album of compositions with the quintet. His captivating style, lyricism and versatility has also featured on recent recordings and performances across the UK with Sara Colman, Greg Cordez and We Are Leif.

Steve Banks Quintet are:
Steve Banks – electric guitar
Sam Crockatt – saxophone
Rebecca Nash – keyboard
Henrik Jensen – bass
ark Whitlam – drums

“A remarkable guitarist” Fringe Jazz

“Steve’s melodies were accessible showcases for the band’s collective and individual talents across a range of moods” Bristol 247 (live review)
